I hate the windows explorer in Vista. It is hard use and often just plain doesn't work. I tried to buy another file manager, but it interferred with my AOL and the one by Google won't work on Vista. Can I shift back to the old XP explorer? I can't understand why Microsoft "fixes" things that are not broken with new systems that work so poorly.
View 5 RepliesI just recently purchased a new laptop and it seems that my keyboard is having problems (which is becoming a little annoying when trying to write 2000+ page essays). When I am typing sometimes shortcuts will be in use (as though I have hit CTRL or SHIFT). I can be writing the letter T and a new tab in firefox will be created. Is there anyway to fix this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedNot sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.

Everytime i press CRT ALT or SHIFT a text box apears in teh middle of my screen.... how can I stop this from happening... It happens no matter what is running even games.

The right hand shift key no longer works when typing uppercase letters but still works with the arrow keys when highlighting text. I don't think that the key has actually failed completely. I am not familiar with laptops as this is the first one I have owned.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to change the display filename colors in Vista Windows Explorer similar to the MAC O/S Feature. This question does NOT deal with Encrypted Files or Compressed Files. I simply want to change the display names of the files to colors such as BLUE, GREY, etc., just like I can do on the MAC O/S for the past 5 years.
I do NOT want to use any third party software file managers. There must be a way to do it in Windows since APPLE has been doing it for 60 months now. I have a new Dell laptop with a pre-installed Vista Business,and I would like to shift or "slide" its partition forward toward the start of the hard drive by 10GB to make way for a Linux dual-boot between Vista and Linux. (This is not a "shrink" operation.) Does anyone know of a utility that can do this with Vista? Gparted, BootIt NG, and Acronis Disk Director are the traditional utilities which come to mind, but I've heard of difficulties with Vista partitions where the partition was created by the Vista installer. View 8 Replies View RelatedI wasn't quite sure if IE8 was the culprit, but it became apparent once I removed it. Internet Explorer 8 interferes with the functionality in Windows Explorer for Vista. Say for example: With IE8 installed, open up "Computer". Close it, then open it again. It should be instantaneous. But its not. A window will take over to 10 seconds to show its initial contents. Once its open though, its very fast because the instance is already running. But once it closes it will take another 10 seconds to open again. Internet Explorer 8 itself opens up very slowly even after the first opening. Can any Vista users verify this?
1. Install IE8
2. Go: Start > click Computer
3. Close that Window.
4. Repeat step 2.
Is it an instantaneous opening or does the window take more than 5 seconds to populate? Repeat those steps with opening Internet Explorer. Is it the same? If so, welcome to the club. Does Microsoft have any way to report this bug to developers?
I can get the good old Windows Update interface back, somehow the interface as changed for something that is less usefull and easy to find what update I need to do or not.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI had just installed Warhammer Online and everything was going well. The following day after i had finished gaming i logged off. From there i was about to click the little red shut down button but it was unclickable. After some time i just released the battery from the back. To see if everything was ok i tried turning it on again and it said Windows Error Recovery. It gave me 2 options, Startup Repair Which was recommended and normal startup. I clicked startup repair but when i did the screen went black and brought me straight back to Windows Error Recovery. No matter how many times i click repair it doesnt work. If i click normal start it just Brings me to the screen where it says Microsoft and there a little green bar flashing over and back as if loading. After some time it goes black and i have to remove battery to turn it off.

I am attempting to play Age of Empires on Windows Vista. I can load and play the game, but sometimes (Almost always) the entire computer will freeze. I cannot even get back to my desktop using key strokes. I have to hold down the power button to shut the computer down. WHen I re-boot the computer the screen resolution is all messed up because it is still set to the low AOE II screen resolution settings. Is there anything I can do to stop making the computer freeze?

View 8 Replies View RelatedWhen I insert the DVD, I click on 'Install Now' and the whole installation process works fine. But, right at the very end, it says 'Completing Installation'. Then, it says 'The installation was unsuccessful so the computer is reverting back to your previous version of windows'. Then my computer restarts back as Windows XP. I have made sure I have all the system requirements and have downloaded and run the upgrade advisor. I have installed the vista home premium on my laptop first and it works fine. It just doesn't seem to want to install on my desktop computer.

frame fo the window so it cant be half on and half off. Because this is a netbook the screen is not big so I want to drag my windows off the screen so only half shows up. How can I turn this feature off so i can have my windows dragged half off the screen.
i'm kinda desperate atm. My laptop has this annoying habit of reverting back to windows standard/classic theme after almost every restart. I said almost as after 2/3 and sometimes even more, my aero theme correctly appeared. After another restart right after that, the problem occurs all over again. The search function in the start menu and windows explorer also 'failed to initialize' when in the said windows standard/classic mode.
I figured that this might have something to do with my user profile as I have the 'User Profile Service service failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded' problem once very recently but I've fixed it using the tutorial in this forum. The windows standard/classic theme problem had been on for quite a while back, before the user profile problem. Before all this happened, I've had this 'C:WindowsSystem32configsystemprofileDesktop refers to a location that is unavailable...' problem. I fixed that by copying all my files and folders in my C:Users[Username] folder to the location above and replacing all the files including desktop.ini. It is only after this that I've had the windows standard/classic theme problem.
I couldn't help but wonder if somehow my user profile has got something to do with it? Windows system restore could not fix this problem. By the way, I'm using a modified aero theme at the moment, using TuneUp Utilities 2009 on a Vista Home Premium 32bit Acer 5920G laptop.
I ran the Memory Diagnostics tool and after it completed and rebooted back into Windows, I didnt see any results. Where do you see the results of the test? I'm trying to diagnose this problem where my PC is rebooting at random, but I can't determine if it's a memory problem or not. So where can I find the results of this test?

View 4 Replies View RelatedLately when I've tried looking at different folders and files on my hard drives I keep getting "Windows Explorer has stopped working and will restart." It's driving me nuts, I can barely do anything.
Also, same thing with Internet Explorer...I'm getting real sick of Vista's shoddiness..
Where in Vista can I go to get a comprehensive list of everything on my hard
drive? I used to have this in Windows 98. It was called Windows Explorer.
Is there some way I can see everything I have in on one screen and drill
down and expand to see what?
I dunno what happened, but the list of folders to the left is gone, I cant seem to fix it, anyone know how? And yes I have checked Tools-Folder Options but nothing there seems to bring it back up, also other windows stuff doesnt seem to work right anymore
