Uninstall: Cannot Revert Back To XP
May 16, 2008I had Xp on my compurter, I bought Vista home Premium UPGRADE, Help Says I cannot revert back to XP. Previous Versions of Windows had a unistall in Add/remove Programs, I see none in Vista! Very Very Disatified with Vista. My Books have disapeared 3 times in one WEEK , But Vista Mirrors them in internet Explorer and They are there as Favorites, But Not in Mozilla. My Backup program that I used on Xp, 10 minutes before I upgraded to Vista, IS NOT compatible with Vista. So I cannot Retreave Bckups. My only Recourse is to Fdisk and Reformat and Reinstall Xp Via The Full Backup. Microsoft For KILLING Mozilla/ Netscape files so that I may Switch to IE. I am going to polute the AIR by Burning The Complete Package of Vista that I bought

Oct 13, 2008Not sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.

Mar 9, 2009all of a sudden my windows firewall has gone off and I cannot put it back on manually or auto. I have scanned my system with 3 virus programs and spyware programs and all is clear. I do not have any Norton software on my pc but the only thing I have done recently is put a new netgear wireless router on my system. running vista home premium all up to date

1. Purchased eMachines pc Dec 06 with XP Media Center installed, with free
upgrade to Vista when available.
2. obtained Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and installed it May 07.
3. I have emachines operating system disk called "Windows XP MC version 2005
with Update Rollup 2" which has the following printed on it: Use this disc to
re-install your operating system.
4. computer: 2G RAM, Pent 4, 3GHz, 160G hard drive with about 100G free
(includes a d: drive partition), 250G external hard drive.
Question 1: despite absence of windows.old, is there any way to kill Vista
and re-install XP MC? A clean reformat, perhaps?
Question 2: if it is possible, I need step-by-step. Can you furnish this?

But, in Security Center it shows my 3rd party firewall being On but Windows Firewall being off. Also, in Administrative Tools---Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is showing Windows Firewall being on in Domain Profile. Is this normal? May 14, 2009I recently tried to burn a CD for the first time in a number of months. I'd always used Roxio software for burning with no real probs but this time I could not get the drive to recognize the CD-R disk. Decided to delete the Roxio software and use the built in Windows Vista burning program instead but kept getting same message asking me to insert a disk. Checked the DVD RW drive properties and found it was set up ok as a recordable drive. Decided that the drive must be kaput so I bought a new one. Installed that ok but still Windows wouldn't recognize any recordable disks of any form that I put in the drive. Installeed the Nero 8 software that came with the drive and still have the same problem using that!

(Sentinel slightly changed the original icon by putting green bars on the icon). After, I opened My Computer and the Hard Disk Icons were changed (see Capture.jpg). Does anyone know how to revert the changes to the original icon? The "OS (C: " was the only one that had a Windows Vista icon on an image of a hard disk and the rest were the same but without the icon (see os.jpg).

Dual Monitor Display Settings Revert On Startup
May 7, 2008I run Vista on a laptop and have a 2nd monitor hooked up via a docking station. I set my 2nd monitor (i.e. not the laptop screen) as my main monitor, however, after every restart Vista always reverts back to the Laptop as the main monitor. How can I stop Vista reverting backto the Laptop as the main monitor? (This happens aven though at no stage have I un-docked the laptop!)

The system is running just great, however, I've always wondered why I need both the CA and the Windows firewall running at the same time. In CA I can create a list of website that are allowed thru the firewall, but I'm not sure if I can do that with Windows firewall.
Is it OK to disable the CA firewall permanently? Is there a way to specify
what is allowed thru the Windows firewall. And lastly, should I just uninstall the whole CA suite altogether?

Cannot Start Windows Firewall
Apr 2, 2010Awhile ago I disabled windows firewall as I was using Norton 360's firewall. The other day, I uninstalled Norton and tried to reactivate Windows Vista Firewall and it fails to do so. It says to try manually and that does not work either. I even tried restarting the computer and that did not cure the problem. It keeps telling me that the service is not running and when I try it fails to load again.

Mar 23, 2008I'm running Vista on my new laptop and have had a couple problems with my firewall turning off by itself. I do have McAfee on it that also keeps saying that there is an error with security and that it has stopped running. It does this everytime I turn it on and go online. I do have an additional anti-virus program called Threatfire which is another free downloadable program that was suggested by a couple of local computer techs. Whenever I run a virus scan everything comes up clean with the exception of Threatfire alerting me several times of potential malware that I've quarantined. I noticed on a previous question that a anti-virus program called "AVG" is mentioned and another download through Kaspersky.com. Has anyone else even heard of ThreatFire and is it comparable to these other free antivirus programs?

Every 2 minutes or so the red shield appears in the icon tray and when I click on it it tells me the firewall is deactivated. I activate it, it goes on and then two minutes later off again!!!

Dec 23, 2008HP support, Norton support, here, talking to tons of friends in the know and no one said hey dude you might have two firewall running. I had two firewalls running at the same time. DAH!! Windows vista firewall and Norton's 360 firewall. I shut down Windows firewall and wala! New PC is screaming.. I'm so elated you can't realize. So folks if your having some problems you can't figure out just check to see how many firewalls you got going. Oh and a firewall on the router to. But I put a switch in place of that. I figured I would keep Norton's 360 firewall as to keep all my security in the same place. I assume that's a good choice. Anyone with me?

Feb 20, 2008Getting my new system in a few days and it will have Vista Prem 64bit installed. The new system is going to be used for gaming and some surfing, all other stuff such as downloading and internet banking will be done on this machine which is running XP along with Avast and Comodo.
My question is- For the gaming machine I'm going to use Avast AV but do I need a separate firewall or is the one built into Vista good enough? Also I have heard of windows defender, is this already on Vista? Any other things/suggestions I need to do as soon as I start the new machine up? I was thinking of doing a system restore point before I put anything on it!

unfortunately, the outbound filtering has been disabled. I'm not quite sure why Microsoft made this decision but from a security point of view it would have made perfect sense to have it enabled by default.
