HP support, Norton support, here, talking to tons of friends in the know and no one said hey dude you might have two firewall running. I had two firewalls running at the same time. DAH!! Windows vista firewall and Norton's 360 firewall. I shut down Windows firewall and wala! New PC is screaming.. I'm so elated you can't realize. So folks if your having some problems you can't figure out just check to see how many firewalls you got going. Oh and a firewall on the router to. But I put a switch in place of that. I figured I would keep Norton's 360 firewall as to keep all my security in the same place. I assume that's a good choice. Anyone with me?
I am using Vista ultimate with a new Canon LBP2900I laser printer. If I print with the windows firewall turned on it takes an age ti get a print out, if I turn off the firewall it prints stright away. All the drivers are up to date. In the firewall exceptions the printer is listed and ticked
Windows Vista Basic sp1. Im using a 3rd party firewall program. In Administrative Tools---Services it shows Windows Firewall status as Started. But, in Security Center it shows my 3rd party firewall being On but Windows Firewall being off. Also, in Administrative Tools---Windows Firewall with Advanced Security is showing Windows Firewall being on in Domain Profile. Is this normal? Why would one show Windows Firewall as On and another show it as Off?
My firewall gives me this error message when i try to set it on. "Windows cannot start the Windows Firewall service." I have just installed SP1 but the problem started before that.
I have an acer 3055WXMi laptop running Windows Vista home basic 32bit. I hav no 3rd party firewall, only other security software i have is AVG anti-virus Every time i start up my laptop windows firewall fails 2 start, windows security alerts comes up.
Back in the old days when TVs and radios had tubes, it took a couple of minutes for a set to warm up before you could watch or listen. But even then, you could turn it off instantly. That's not true with Windows PCs. Not only does it sometimes take seemingly forever for them to boot, but it can take several minutes for one to shut down. Even worse, if a program stops responding, you may or may not be able to shut it down. And even if it does terminate, it may take awhile.
And by the way, I'm not just talking about Windows XP and Vista. I'm having the same problem with Windows 7 though, to be fair, the new operating system is still in beta so it's possible that Microsoft could amaze and delight me by fixing this in the final version. I purchased and installed the latest version of Limewire Pro today. I then proceeded to download a video file and stored it in the same shared folder I have used with every version of Limewire. As per usual, I ran a virus scan on the file prior to attempting to open it with Windows Media Player. I then get a message telling me that Windows COM surrogate has shut down the player to protect my computer. To ensure that my AV program was not missing something, I downloaded the same file from two other listed sources. After getting the same result with three different versions of the same file, I have to assume that all three are nor corrupt. The problem is either with Limewire or Vista.
I have an HP530 notebook with standard features and 2GB RAM. The system comes with a bulit in Windows Vista Home edition. For past few months the system has a painfully slow shutdown, in which has taken from 30 minutes to 9 hours to shutdown after i pressed the shutdown button on the start menu. But lately, since last few weeks, upon pressing shutdown, the system gets in to the logging off mode and never shuts down. I have left it for around 12hours one day and it did not finish logging of. I now have to manually give it a hard reboot by pushing down the power button. Is this a known problem or is there any knows solution to this problem.
I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2, 2 GB RAM, SAS, MBAM, CA (California Associates) AV (e-mail scanning disabled); Avira AV/Update scheduler, CCleaner, and Windows Firewall, WLM on an Acer Aspire Desktop machine.
The system is running just great, however, I've always wondered why I need both the CA and the Windows firewall running at the same time. In CA I can create a list of website that are allowed thru the firewall, but I'm not sure if I can do that with Windows firewall.
Is it OK to disable the CA firewall permanently? Is there a way to specify what is allowed thru the Windows firewall. And lastly, should I just uninstall the whole CA suite altogether?
I'm currently running McAfee Internet Security. Yesterday I was talking to my computer tech who said he didn't like McAfee and recommended the free version of AVG and windows Firewall.
i'd like to know details about the vista firewall. Does it now indeed block incoming and outgoing? i assume microsoft didnot create the firewall for nothing. So is it really neccesary to install another one, and if so, do i then need to turn off the windows firewall? and if i need another one, which one?

I get a security alert saying my antivirus software may not be installed. Then, later I get a popup from Norton saying Windows Firewall has been turned on. Do u want to use Norton Internet Security instead of Windows Firewall? My Windows Firewall had always been turned on. This started the other day after I did salvagerepository to fix something else. Does Windows Vista recognize Norton? How do I stop these from popping up? Also, my free subscription to norton ends in a week?
Awhile ago I disabled windows firewall as I was using Norton 360's firewall. The other day, I uninstalled Norton and tried to reactivate Windows Vista Firewall and it fails to do so. It says to try manually and that does not work either. I even tried restarting the computer and that did not cure the problem. It keeps telling me that the service is not running and when I try it fails to load again.
I'm running Vista on my new laptop and have had a couple problems with my firewall turning off by itself. I do have McAfee on it that also keeps saying that there is an error with security and that it has stopped running. It does this everytime I turn it on and go online. I do have an additional anti-virus program called Threatfire which is another free downloadable program that was suggested by a couple of local computer techs. Whenever I run a virus scan everything comes up clean with the exception of Threatfire alerting me several times of potential malware that I've quarantined. I noticed on a previous question that a anti-virus program called "AVG" is mentioned and another download through Kaspersky.com. Has anyone else even heard of ThreatFire and is it comparable to these other free antivirus programs?
I have an Acer Aspire 5103 running Windows Vista Premium and using Firefox. I have not downloaded a third party firewall. Every 2 minutes or so the red shield appears in the icon tray and when I click on it it tells me the firewall is deactivated. I activate it, it goes on and then two minutes later off again!!!
I just got an Acer Aspire last week. OS Vista basic. It came with a trial version of McAfee, so i uninstalled. Currently using AVG 8.0. Also running windows defender. On boot, security icon in tray indicates the windows firewall is shut down. I'm not sure if defender or AVG has built in firewall that is taking over ans shutting off the windows firewall.
I have tried everything possible that is posted here - my issues are:
1) Randomly the laptop restarts by itself 2) When I close the lid, it goes to sleep (as set up under power settings) but when I "wake it up" - it restarts and I get the error that windows did not shut down properly.
I recently purchased Windows Vista Premium upgrade for my Computer. I installed it as an upgrade and it worked for a little bit then it needed to downloaded updates. After it downloaded the updates it said it needed to install them and close windows and reopen. So it closed and when Windows reopend it said that the updates had an error and needed to reload and shut down and restart. Then it did it again and again and again. So being disgusted with the whole thing I did a clean install. Now what my problem is, is that when I try to activate windows online it says that my version of Windows is for upgrading not for clean install and it wont give me the option to activate by phone. How do I go about doing it by phone? What would be the phone number to do this?
I have Windows Vista on my VAIO laptop. I use a wireless connection at my dorm to connect to the internet. Sadly, suddenly my Internet stopped working. It seems to be connected but no page can be loaded. At first when I diagnosed and repaired it said that there is no problem, but it still wouldn't load any pages. Now when I do a diagnose and repair it says something about the filter query policy being changed and to check my firewall setting.
Getting my new system in a few days and it will have Vista Prem 64bit installed. The new system is going to be used for gaming and some surfing, all other stuff such as downloading and internet banking will be done on this machine which is running XP along with Avast and Comodo.
My question is- For the gaming machine I'm going to use Avast AV but do I need a separate firewall or is the one built into Vista good enough? Also I have heard of windows defender, is this already on Vista? Any other things/suggestions I need to do as soon as I start the new machine up? I was thinking of doing a system restore point before I put anything on it!
some of us want to choose what "gets out" and what doesn't. And this info doesn't work since there is nowhere to make such a change in the Windows Firewall window that comes up. Configure it - HOW? Can some one explain how it's configured to actually work without being a programmer writing strange unknown confusing rules for everything that wants to connect to the net? If not, can someone recommend a good free easy to use two-way FireWall like ZoneAlarm that's compatible with Vista?
unfortunately, the outbound filtering has been disabled. I'm not quite sure why Microsoft made this decision but from a security point of view it would have made perfect sense to have it enabled by default. I have this annoying windows firewall box that pops up about every 15 minutes or so and i am starting to get really annoyed. The attached picture shows everything. I had Avast! when it stared and that didnt catch anything in real-time if my full system scan. I also downloaded spybot and that didnot come up with anything in my full system scan. Now i have downloaded comodo and there is nothing that has come up so far. How should i go about this? how do i stop comodo from haveing a popup box everytime i run something(it feels like every time i click the mouse for a program i have to approve about 5 other things with comodo before i can actually get to the program or task i am doing.)
i have just installed PES 2009 an i could log into the Gamenetwork of Konami without permitting PES to connect to the internet! So have looked it up and there is no cross for PES in the FireWall-settings. How is this possible? Perhaps the Gamesettings which open some Ports (but ports have nothing to do with the firewall or?)
I uninstalled Norton 360. I installed AVG and when the installation completed, there was 1 error. The Windows Firewall was not turned on. I can not get the Security Center to turn on the Firewall. It will not update the Settings for the Firewall either.
Occasionally when I use the Sleep function I am unable to open the screen again by hitting a key. I've had to manually shut down and reboot. I then get a message that the Windows was improperly shut down. Has anyone else experienced this?
I've read about this problem in several other post but no solutions that have worked for me.
My problem is that whenever I close my lid, allow my computer to go to sleep/hibernate, or even go to start->shut down, my computer restarts.
This past weekend I had my computer reformatted, thinking this would solve the problem, but the problem still persists.
The only way I can make my computer turn off is to hold down the power button for several seconds.
I have minimum computer knowledge, but I have been trying step by step solutions listed on other forums. I've been through all of the power management steps and have all of my settings on the suggested settings for this problem. I've deactivated almost all applications from opening on start up. I've checked USB, LAN settings and I believe those are not the problem. Still kind of unfamiliar with BIOS
