I installed "HDD Sentinel" just to check what it was like and compare it to "HDD Life" I then uninstalled it. (Sentinel slightly changed the original icon by putting green bars on the icon). After, I opened My Computer and the Hard Disk Icons were changed (see Capture.jpg). Does anyone know how to revert the changes to the original icon? The "OS (C: " was the only one that had a Windows Vista icon on an image of a hard disk and the rest were the same but without the icon (see os.jpg).
I accidentally deleted the Mail icon from the Start Menu (Vista Ultimate x32) and a ballon came up with the steps to restore this which instantly disappeared. I run Office 2007 with Outlook as the default mail client. I did manage to create the shortcut for Outlook 2007 and drop it on the Start Menu and it works. However, on right click it does not give the three options (E-Mail Accounts; Data Files; Show Profiles) that was part of the standard options. I am able to access these options from the Control Panel (Mail) but would prefer to restore the Start Menu. I did re-install Office suite but it did not change. Is there a way to restore this back?
I have have continuous slow response in loading of web pages since install IE 8.Am running on a 5 meg internet connection and at times loading a simple Amazon page will take 85 seconds. Totally unacceptable when it was instantious with IE 7.How do I return to IE 7 as attempts to do so thru MS site informs me of a 2 hr plus download?
For some unexplainable reason, I cannot find windows old on my pc I wish to revert to XP from Vista Business. Here are details:
1. Purchased eMachines pc Dec 06 with XP Media Center installed, with free upgrade to Vista when available.
2. obtained Express Upgrade to Windows Vista and installed it May 07.
3. I have emachines operating system disk called "Windows XP MC version 2005 with Update Rollup 2" which has the following printed on it: Use this disc to re-install your operating system.
4. computer: 2G RAM, Pent 4, 3GHz, 160G hard drive with about 100G free (includes a d: drive partition), 250G external hard drive.
Question 1: despite absence of windows.old, is there any way to kill Vista and re-install XP MC? A clean reformat, perhaps?
Question 2: if it is possible, I need step-by-step. Can you furnish this?
I had Xp on my compurter, I bought Vista home Premium UPGRADE, Help Says I cannot revert back to XP. Previous Versions of Windows had a unistall in Add/remove Programs, I see none in Vista! Very Very Disatified with Vista. My Books have disapeared 3 times in one WEEK , But Vista Mirrors them in internet Explorer and They are there as Favorites, But Not in Mozilla. My Backup program that I used on Xp, 10 minutes before I upgraded to Vista, IS NOT compatible with Vista. So I cannot Retreave Bckups. My only Recourse is to Fdisk and Reformat and Reinstall Xp Via The Full Backup. Microsoft For KILLING Mozilla/ Netscape files so that I may Switch to IE. I am going to polute the AIR by Burning The Complete Package of Vista that I bought
Not sure if there's already a thread here like this but I'll give it a shot. I'm curious what opinions everyone has out there about IE 8 B2? So far I've tried it two times. I installed it a few months back when I still had XP and didn't like it at all. Then, after I upgraded to Vista, I tried it again and still didn't like it, 2 months later. Top it all off, I couldn't revert back to IE 7 as easily. I had to completely do a System Restore in order to do so. What's even worse, is even though I did that, some things were all messed up from the process. So I just ended up re-installing Vista to fix it.
So now I'm completely anti-IE8. I love IE entirely. But it just doesn't seem ready yet. I know they're still working on it and is not due for official release until possibly November, however, is that still too soon? Some features I disliked:
Colored tabs. ew. hard on the eyes, what's going on? keep them all the same. Location bar drop down menu. wayyyy too complicated, and right about where I have my mouse when I click it to select a previous website I entered, a small delete button appears and many times I click that and then realize, crap I just deleted it - annoying. Compatibility Option. Okay what's with this? What are they changing that's making it INCOMPATIBLE with websites in the first place? Shouldn't it be compatible with all websites? Kind of annoying to have to even worry about that.
I run Vista on a laptop and have a 2nd monitor hooked up via a docking station. I set my 2nd monitor (i.e. not the laptop screen) as my main monitor, however, after every restart Vista always reverts back to the Laptop as the main monitor. How can I stop Vista reverting backto the Laptop as the main monitor? (This happens aven though at no stage have I un-docked the laptop!)
I would like the option to back out of the enterprise edition and revert to my own licence if necessary. When I got this PC it didn't come with any system discs, only a factory image on a partition. I have since created recovery disks for it. Are the recovery discs what I need to restore to the original configuration? If not, what is the correct strategy to take?
A friend of mine asked me if he can upgrade from XP to Vista. I advised him to run the Vista upgrade advisor which he did and got an OK. He proceeded to upgrade. After a few days, I got a call from him. In a disgruntled voice he explained to me how the system slowed down, he ran into various problems, locking up, etc. and at the end of the conversation he made this plea - "I WANT MY XP BACK!" Can I run restore doing the following:
1) Use system restore or 2) Reinstall XP from his original CD
Sorry of this naive question. I just start with V64. Can not open any original game. Start-->Games = see games explorer onl, not list of games. When open Games Explorer see all 9 games. One click = see rating of game. Two click = see Saved Games Screen.
In Outlook Express the BCC field was listed at the top of each new email. In Windows Mail you have to click on the TO: let it open the window then type the BCC in the field. How can you get the BCC field to appear on the original window?
I own a x86 (32bit) original copy of Windows Vista Home Premium. Since my CPU is 64bit I'd like to use a x64 edition of Vista. My question is: can I use my 32bit serial with a x64 edition? Do I need to active it by telephone (since I already activate my 32b copy)?
I reinstalled Vista over the original operating system and then found I had lost my registration code to my ms office home and student 2007. I've heard of Belarc but the new system is in effect now. I did ask to have the old saved but don't have enough techie to know if I can access it to get the reg code for my ms suite.
My ageing Thinkpad with XP Pro died so I've decided to build a new custom desktop from scratch. Can I install Vista Ultimate upgrade directly without having to install XP first? I would like to have a clean install of Vista, not an upgrade. Also since XP Pro license was activated on the Thinkpad, do I need to call MS and get another activation key??
I have a Compaq Presario desktop running windows vista, home basic, 32 bit. Several weeks ago, the hard drive died. I replaced it with a 500GB Seagate Barracuda hdd. Here is my problem. Hopefully, I can get some ideas. I have tried unsuccessfully to re-install the os using the recovery disks. When I attempt it, one of two things will happen. It will boot as far as the green windows loading bar, then go to a dark screen with no curser, arrow, nothing. Or, it will get to the factory image restore screen, with two check boxes, one saying reformatting windows partition, the other saying re-installing original content. It does neither. Just freezes up. I created the recovery disks when I bought the computer about 2 years ago. Could the disks be bad? Or is it possible I may have other issues?
I have been using a different boot screen for awhile, with no issues. I updated to SP1 and everything seems to have went just fine. But it did, for some reason, change my boot screen back to the original. No big deal, I thought, I will just change it again. I did that, and it seemed to go fine until just now (a day later).
Now the boot screen once again is back to the factory boot screen, and I cannot get it to change to my custom. I can change the .mui file in the windows/system32/en-US folder (winload.exe.mui) with no problems. But when I restart, it is the factory boot screen.

I receive a lot of emails throughout the day, I've set up a message rule for mails so they get auto forwarded to my secretary so she can respond to them. This is where the problem starts. The emails that get forwarded to my secretary only shows that they were sent from me, the original senders emails are nowhere on the email. So all of the emails that get auto-forwarded all end up saying they are from me and not from any of the original senders. So there is no point of her replying since it will end up back in my inbox. Is there a way to fix this? I need an option or a solution for WINDOWS MAIL to place the original sender in my forwarded emails. Is there a checkbox I neglected to click or is the problem not fixable?
Haven't tried VMware on my Vista 64, though I have tried microsoft's own offering using my Windows Vista 64 system as a host to a Windows XP 32 guest. I installed Crysis in to my virtualized Windows XP 32 system but when I insert the disc in to DVD drive Crysis tells me it needs an original disc not a back up, [ and that is the original disc ] so I can't figure out why it thinks it is a back-up.
I have been reading the posts on this site for some time and I am impressed with the depth of knowledge displayed by some of the experts. I hope that you will be able to help me with my problem. I am using a Dell 1720 Inspiron laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. In use for more then one year with no problems until now. A problem has arisen with the Index and Search feature which has defied my attempts to correct. I describe the problem as follows: For example, I wish to locate a file titled 'catalog.xls'. I enter the Start menu and in the Search box at bottom of menu, I write 'c'. The return should be a selection of files grouped as 'PROGRAMS', 'FILES' and 'FAVORITES&HISTORY'. The avorites and the Programs are there but not the Files. I am certain that the 'catalog.xls' file does exist and it is in the hard drive but my searcher (index) system is failing to locate it or any other files. In my attempts at correcting this, I went to CP>Index Options. States that zero files have been indexed. I then tried to rebuild the index and/or to restore original defaults.
I have Windows Vista Basic and have been trying to use an OEM anytime-upgrade to Premium edition. I did the online check and found my PC was compatable. Every time I try to upgrade, everything goes well until the very end. At that point my PC goes into a reset loop. It resets, a blue screen states that netio.sys has some sort of problem (but is too quick for me to note any of it down - useful!), then I get the option of loading MS Vista or go back to the original version. IF I chose Vista the PC eventually resets and I start this little game again!
The only info I have managed to note down from the blue screen is: nsiproxy.sys or netio.sys and something about the memory dump (which I can't access - I have tried!) Stop 0x0000BE (some leters and numbers in brackets, this is up for seconds so can't note down!) I've tried to stop the PC resetting via the control panel. Once in the reset loop I can't do anything except Rollback to the original settings. If I try to go to safe mode I'm told I need to reset so as windows can complete the installation.
I have a PC i am trying to format and reinstall windows vista. Unfortunately my mate has lost his original recovery dvd I made him and has now got a corrupted/damaged recovery partition. After all the searching I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do this. I want to format the hard drive and start from fresh as he has major Virus problems. I tried searching old threads but couldnt find anything like what I needed, I hope I am not repaeting a thread already. If so please point me in right direction. If it helps its a Acer 6252 travelmate.
I have saved about 3000 photos in my computer under a folder called photos. But since some weeks, my computer is changing the original look of my pictures to very ugly views. I meant sometimes when I open my photo folders, suddenly some pictures are getting discoloured automatically. Sometimes the pictures are cutting to two pieces automatically. If the picture's background is green, sometimes it is changing to red, yellow or some other colour. But after this happened, I cannot get them back to it's original view at all. I don't know what's happening here. Already I have lost lot of my important photos because of this, and I even haven't saved them somewhere else. I already have deleted them from my camera too. Since I bought this computer, I am getting lot of problems in this. I don't know if it is because of VISTA or any other Hardware problem on this computer.
Since I have moved from Outlook Express to VISTA Windows Mail whenever I try to past from the clipboard into an e-mail I am composing it automatically changes any foriegn language fonts characters to all English characters. I would then have to highlight each foriegn language phrase and then select the language font from the font menu. I should not have to do this if Window Mail would retain the original fonts from the clipboard or other document program I am pasting from. How can I resolve this problem.
PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??
