3GB RAM on Vista 32-bit Home Premium and system info is only reporting 2814MB. The motherboard bios is recognizing all 3GB and the memory has tested fine when only 1GB or 2GB is installed on it's own. The memory is all the same - Corsair - same product line and everything. Vista OS is up to date and I am using the latest bios for my motherboard. I will paste the system specs here....
View 7 RepliesI installed 8GB of memory and Vista only shows 3.08GB in the system print out. And the system acts like it only has 2GB. My system boot program shows that it sees all 8GB and there is no indication there is a problem with any of it. The motherboard will support even larger modules. Right now I have four modules of 2GB each. What am I doing wrong?

All of a sudden the backups are failing despite there being 200 Gb free. It fails at unable to create shadow copy insufficient space.

Microsoft, which once predicted businesses would adopt Vista at twice the rate they moved to XP, has scaled back its ambitions and these days talks a lot about how long the adoption curve is for businesses when it comes to new operating systems.
On Vista Home Premium, I've set Chkdsk to run but each time it hangs about three quarters of the way through step 5, at the same cluster each time. I've run the harddisk tests (SMART, surface scan etc) from the computer recovery console and it passes every test OK. If this a physical problem with the drive or a file system one? If it's the latter why can't Chkdsk fix it? It's a new computer should I go through the hassle of returning it to the manufacturer?
P.S. History: it's a brand new Lenovo laptop. When I first switched it on, it gave me that "Vista didn't shut down properly last time" screen, but apart from that everything seemed OK until I got most of the way through all the security updates, cleaning up all the bundled software etc and Windows Update blankly refused to install SP1. I tried a system restore and that told me there was a disk error and to run Chkdsk. Chkdsk refused to run (something about the drive being locked) and in the end I did a factory reset. This is OK in that now all the updates have installed and there are no more errors, but I wanted to double check the disk, so invoked Chkdsk and... see above.
Whenever i log into my pc i get a warning from Windows Security Center sayin that AVG anti virus is turned off, when avg is actually running and the tray icon is showing in the system tray. View 4 Replies View Relatedi have installed litestep, didn't like it, so i pressed uninstall. nothin happened.i decided to reboot, did so, and when i log in, it shows My Computer in explorer! i thought it was just meant to be the desktop starting, not explorer. and there wsa also no taskbar anywhere. i pressed the windows button, nothin happening. anyway i tried safe mode, in which i noticed there was an exe file starting with the core drivers. that must be what is left of litestep.

Because when it the boot process reaches the microsoft corporation and finishes, the system gives a blank screen and hangs. If I wait long enough, 15+ minutes, it finally boots with the vista logo on the second screen and logon password on the first screen. This is a new pc, just built, I should not have this problem. The pc has an integrated nvidia 9400 with 9800gt. Can it be a grahics card problem? I used the cd to install the drivers that came with the 9800gt.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am running a new PC with Vista Home Premium. I am a McAfee subscriber and use the firewall/virus scan features. When I tried to install the McAfee, it stopped midway and stated that the system already has a antivirus installed which must be deactivated. So I uninstalled the factory antivirus software and McAfee installed satisfactorily. So it seems that only ONE antivirus software can operate at any given time. OK, that I understand now, but what about firewalls?
The McAfee has its own firewall, and of course the Windows system has its own firewall, and I even think my Roadrunner ISP connection has some sort of protection as well. Is it OK to have multiple firewalls active at once, or does the Mcfee overshadow the others? Should I turn OFF the Windows firewall? Sorry that this isnt exclusively Vista oriented but I read this column daily and there is a lot of very intelligent users here and I am sure some of you will be kind enough to reply.

As ive read on other topics, I think its a driver issue, but I just dont know what to do. I will try another fresh vista install tomorrow and get the vista updates quickly to see whether that helps the situation. I have ensured it isnt overheating like it did initially when I bought the system, and it is now a safe and low temperature in a running state. Ive re-installed, windows, and it froze after I installed the chipset driver. I contiuned, and found a sound driver wasnt digitally signed. However it still crashes. I have got the latest drivers for it. For it to crash, all i did was open recycle bin, from idle state.
I shouldn't be surprised but here goes....I checked today for SP1 on windows update.. According to my computer no updates available however updates were last installed on 03/13/08 and yet when you look at installed updates it shows a windows defender update installed today. I have been reading several posts on this problem and have noticed that Carey Frisch posted a link to troubleshoot and now here is a problem and that is none of these apply to me... View 9 Replies View Relatedlet me start this nightmare story i had just done a fresh restalled and spent hours on getting everything installed on pc all was fine working perfectly untill that is i installed vista service pack 1 from windows updates the update process crashed halfway through so i had the only option to restart my pc then came the blue screen of death and it metioned if you have any new hardware installed make sure all drivers are installed etc etc of course i know it wasnt hardware it was because of me restating my pc half way threw the service pack 1 and the full files not been installed threw the update process crashed was the reason for the blue screen but the blue screen had notes advising me to clear shadow memory in the bois and any other memory so i stupidly assumed this was channel mapping and bank mapping and put them all to zero please see jpeg of what i changed i basically disabled everything that was enabled and put all the mapping channels and bank channels to zero and now when i switch on my laptop i get a blank screen with no post no ...........

Now 5 months later is states that I need to validate. I guess whatever was running on my system was temporary. If I go into system protection I get this error: C:WindowsSystem32SYSDM.CPL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.
I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....

The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:
This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.
Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........

I could also 'manually' create a 'System Checkpoint.' What I would like to know is - doees Vista (Home Premium) create such an 'automatic' System Checkpoint if I have notebook turned on, but don't use if for about 30 minutes?
(I believe there is a way to turn on an Automatic 'System Checkpoint' that you can schedule to be done at a certain time. That is not what I am talking about. I am talking about an 'automatic' System Checkpoint' that is done if the computer is turned on, but not used for 30 minutes or more (approximately).
