I'm running Windows XP SP3 and recently I've been getting an occasional windows system sound for a "critical stop" when nothing I know of is running. No icons disappear from the system tray either. Is there a way to find what program is causing that sound? Thanks

I am running a windows XP system. The other day I was uninstalling a piece of software that I had downloaded and wasn't paying attention as I clicked through the prompts and inadvertantly uninstalled it and the sounds for my computer. Is there a way to reverse my blunder and return this computer to its beeping and whirring glory. The computer is my landlords and he is being very restrained in his reaction to my inattentiveness.

I ran my up-to-date antispyware program (spy sweeper) and antivirus (norton), and while it did get rid of a few things, the message still pops up.
Clicking on the popup takes me to the site in the attachment.
so i get my laptop from my brother who was borrowing it and i see in the start menu that there is a little icon that flashes from a blue and white question mark into the red circle with one line symbol. when highlighted it says Critical System Error!. i click on it and it pops up a page for me to download some antimalware or something. idk what's going on so i'm doing an ewido scan and i did a hijackthis log

The latest version of the driver and operating software from the C-Media website is dated December 2004.I have two hard drives, both the exact same type (Western Digital WDC 3200JB, 320 GB), both with Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed. On my second hard drive, I continue to be able to play DVDs on any of my DVD player programs that I wish, with no problems. However, on my primary hard drive, I have run into problems. Some time ago, I don't remember anything about what might have caused it, both Windows Media Player 11 and InterActual Player 2.6 (http://www.interactual.com/) stopped playing my DVD's. I could still use InterVideo WinDVD or my ATI Radeon X700's DVD playing software, with no problems, but WMP and IAP stopped playing them. WMP would give me an error that, when I clicked "Web help," said it was related to my Sound driver. I went to Windows Update and downloaded the following update:

I have a very strange problem with my computer. I can normally solve most things on my own, but this one is just stumping me. All of my drivers are up to date.This problem is VERY hard to explain using words - so please listen to the attached audio files.The problem is that I cannot really play ANY audio. WHenever I do, it is VERY slow, stuttery and crackly, and often times the pitch of the audio even goes down, as though the processor were trying to.. catch up to the audio. I have recorded a few samples as well. This problem is also affecting the video sometimes, and others not, by producing incredibly stuttery video. Sometimes if I play it for long enough (30 seconds) the sound and video in a movie (mpg, avi doesn't matter) will completely just stop and freeze.I have NO idea what is going on, and it happens whether I use the soundblaster card or the onboard audio.
I have taken everything off my startup msconfig, save microsoft services and AIM, so nothing else is running, and I have scanned for spyware, virus, and the like. Now I"m not sure if these two files will play like they do on my computer - I used winamp/windows media player/itunes all to play these two versions of a Jewel song, and then used sound recorder to record them with my wave out as the record input. Of course, when I play them back, they sound horrible, with all the crackling, stuttering, and lag of the original playback, so I THINK it will sound as bad for someone who listens to this file.
my computer crashes ,screen turns off and the sound stop workin and u cant do anything ,and the computer stays like that and it dont restart by it self, this usally happens when i play games plz help me its very frustrating when i crashes.

Also when the sound dies, sometimes programs will start to freeze up to the point I can't even kill them in tskmgr. System sounds don't play either.I've tried updating to the latest drivers. I tried an older version of the drivers too.

So i decided to use the built in dell software to wipe it clean and revert back to the factory/straight out the box settings. This all went well but now i have no sound what so-ever in windows. I used the diagnostic program you can find by pressing f12 when booting up and in that i could hear music from the speakers but then when i booted up windows there were no sounds at all?

here is the problem: when I plug in an USB device, windows will install the driver for the device automaticlly if:
1. the driver comes with the system.
2. the device driver has been installed.
I wanna stop windows installing driver automatically but ask me the location of the driver when I plug in a device every time. How do I do that?
When I hover my mouse on an inactive window it automatically switches to that window and I don't always want to switch to the inactive window
This happens in explorer or internet explorer and all other programs also. It will switch to whatever I hover the mouse over.
I had a bad copy of xp pro so I bought a new copy of home now I have no sound in any of the windows opps start up or any thing that windows makes sound to all so no sound in any of my medea players. Wmp 9 came with xp home I update to wmp11 and both 9 & 11 will not play avi I tryed to install wmp10 after I rolled back wmp11 but windows told me I cannot install it so I tryed to in stall wmp classic and that cannot be installed either can any one please help with how to turn sound on I have cheeked in control panel sounds to make shore every thing is turned on & no mute buttons are on all looks

View 7 Replies View Relatedi am getting an error message everytime i go to play an mp3 file on windows media or any other player its saids it can't find any sound card devices. plus i'm not getting any sound from Internet or any other sites that play audio files. i checked the driver of the sound card in the device manager and it looks fine. i even uninstalled it and reinstall and nothing still. it's a laptop dell lattitude d600 i believe.

The device has the latest drivers from the manufacturer installed, it's enabled in Windows and the BIOS, the Audio Codecs are there, the Windows Sound service is running, thd driver reports no problems at all and yet, No Audio Devices are found when I go into Sounds and Audio Devices in the Control Panel. I've tried installing another sound card in there too, which installs fine, but still isn't selectable as an audio device. What the heck could I be missing here?

This is only to be used on HP Consumer PCs preinstalled with Windows XP. Your PC does not meet this requirement, so update is being aborted. but my PC was preinstalled with Windows i've just had to reinstall it again!

View 14 Replies View Relatedjust recently experienced a no audio problem on my computer. Originally had a c-media card installed with everything working ok , then suddenly no sounds at all. Removed card and installed spare Sound Blaster Audigy and downloaded latest drivers. Everything installed ok. No conflicts in Device Manager, proper card identified in control panel/sounds. Windows sound on reboot , but after reboot nothing again. After countless removal of sound card in Device Manager and re-installing drivers , no change. Removed card and re-verted back to on board audio. Realtek high definition audio with latest and original cd AC-97 drivers. Now no audio device available in Control panel/sounds. Within the Realtek HD Audio Control panel I can test speakers and hear sound ok.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI own at Pentium 4 XP Home Edition PC. Recently, I lost all of my default system sounds--like boot up sound and closing sound. The sound card is okay, because I can play CDs, listen to Real Player and otherwise get sounds.I have gone into the sounds and audio devices properties panel and don't seem to be able to set it to play the sounds. The test button works the sounds fine, but I cannot actually activate them.I have troubleshooted by surfing the web, installing various supposed registry fixes. I have also read the Microsoft data base articles that seem to pertain. SO FAR NOTHING HAS HELPED.Can anyone suggest what I do short of reinstalling Windows? I don't want to take that drastic step!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been noticing that whenever I reboot my computer, or even at random intervals, that the wave portion of the volume menu goes to zero and it makes the sound on my computer go very quiet. I can move the wave dial back to the max and everything works alright, but I was wondering if anyone has any ideas on why this would be happening. I am running the onboard sound which is nvidia based, but not sure if there are any more current drivers than what I am running.
