Stop Error From Sound Driver?

Aug 24, 2007

My motherboard is an ASUS P4V8X-MX with on-board audio, C-Media AC97 version CMI9761A. The latest version of the driver and operating software from the C-Media website is dated December 2004.I have two hard drives, both the exact same type (Western Digital WDC 3200JB, 320 GB), both with Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed. On my second hard drive, I continue to be able to play DVDs on any of my DVD player programs that I wish, with no problems. However, on my primary hard drive, I have run into problems. Some time ago, I don't remember anything about what might have caused it, both Windows Media Player 11 and InterActual Player 2.6 (http://www.interactual.com/) stopped playing my DVD's. I could still use InterVideo WinDVD or my ATI Radeon X700's DVD playing software, with no problems, but WMP and IAP stopped playing them. WMP would give me an error that, when I clicked "Web help," said it was related to my Sound driver. I went to Windows Update and downloaded the following update:

Windows XP C Media Electronics Incorporation - Sound - C-Media AC97 Audio Device Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Windows Update. But this only made the problem worse, not better-- now when I try to use WMP or IAP to play a DVD, my computer screen just up and suddenly goes dark and I hear the unmistakeable sound of my computer simply up and shutting down, and then it does a total system reboot. After the reboot I get a popup saying the computer has recovered from a Stop Error, caused when a Device Driver suddenly "stops" the operating system. This is a very serious problem because a number of my DVD's are specially optimized to work with InterActual Player and automatically start it up when I put the DVD in the drive. If I try to uninstall the program, then the next time I put one of those DVD's in the drive it absolutely absolutely ***ABSOLUTELY*** forces my computer to reinstall the software immediately.

Aug 7, 2006

New Installation - No Sound Driver?

Feb 23, 2009

Because I am poor, a friend of mine gave me a brand new machine with a blank HD. I have this morning installed a genuine fresh copy of XP Home which appears to have gone on OK (I have 20 years PC experience, but little of it messing around with new installs).
I got my internet working, anti virus etc, but when I checked the device manager to see why I was not getting sound.
I've done a screen cap of device manager (but I don't know how to place it on here) - If anyone wants it e mailing I can of course do that.
By the look of it, the sound card is integral to the motherboard but the device manager is not identifying it by name. If I am identify / find drivers on the net,

Sound And Video Stutter / Then Complete Stop

Sep 11, 2006

I have a very strange problem with my computer. I can normally solve most things on my own, but this one is just stumping me. All of my drivers are up to date. This problem is VERY hard to explain using words - so please listen to the attached audio files. The problem is that I cannot really play ANY audio. WHenever I do, it is VERY slow, stuttery and crackly, and often times the pitch of the audio even goes down, as though the processor were trying to.. catch up to the audio. I have recorded a few samples as well. This problem is also affecting the video sometimes, and others not, by producing incredibly stuttery video. Sometimes if I play it for long enough (30 seconds) the sound and video in a movie (mpg, avi doesn't matter) will completely just stop and freeze.I have NO idea what is going on, and it happens whether I use the soundblaster card or the onboard audio.

I have taken everything off my startup msconfig, save microsoft services and AIM, so nothing else is running, and I have scanned for spyware, virus, and the like. Now I"m not sure if these two files will play like they do on my computer - I used winamp/windows media player/itunes all to play these two versions of a Jewel song, and then used sound recorder to record them with my wave out as the record input. Of course, when I play them back, they sound horrible, with all the crackling, stuttering, and lag of the original playback, so I THINK it will sound as bad for someone who listens to this file.

The only problem is, I don't have the driver CD anymore. when I try to find out what my video/sound cards are I draw a blank because they don't seem to be displayed anywhere (display properties/settings/advanced/adapter). All adapter type and adapter information are all I know my video card is ATI but that's all I know and as for the sound card - I haven't a clue what make that is. I've been on the ATI website but there are so many drivers I don't know which one to download/install.

Uninstalled Sound Max - Driver Are Not Recognized

May 12, 2009

I recently and unwittingly uninstalled my SoundMax program that I assume was my sound driver. As such I can no longer receive audio from my speakers, and the speakers themselves are not recognized by XP. The speakers themselves, by my judgement, are Logitech Z-3e speakers, bought several years ago and working perfectly until this point. They are connected correctly. I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3, with the latest updates. WMP gives me the message: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device" In WMP, under Sync--->Options--->Speaker Properties, the speaker is listed as "Default DirectSound Device" and there is no other option. In Audio Device Properties, there is apparently no audio device. I visited the logitech site for a new sound driver, as XP Help reccomended, at the following site:....
