Oct 28, 2005My dad runs a Quick-Basic program that does particle-physics calculations. He uses the command prompt to run the program. It worked fine on his old 486 (it printed the results when he hit cntrl+print-screen). Then he bought a windoze box with XP. The program still runs fine, you can see the results whizzing past. Dec 2, 2008Upon starting Quicken 2004 Basic, I got a notification that I had to reinstall Quicken,Upon starting an uninstall of Quicken 2004, I got an Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:WINDOWSInstallerQuicken 2004.msl. I have used Windows install clean up, and have run a registry cleaner. I also have gone into the registry, and deleted anything pertaining to Quicken. No matter what I try, Quicken won't reinstall, because I can't uninstall the previous Quicken.

May 27, 2008I recently underwent a clean install of both Win2k Pro & WinXP Pro. In both instances, the DM is reporting that the 'Multimedia Audio Controller' and the 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' are not correctly recognized (drivers not installed).I've done some searching online and many people suggest that a dial-up modem is the culprit behind the messages. In fact, there isn't a dial-up modem installed in my system, only a 10/100 NIC which works fine with both Windows native driver and the maker's driver.I've also searched for the PCI commun. control. drivers online to find that I have nothing to download. I'm not entirely sure what this controller does, although I can most likely find the multimedia audio controller. It's worth noting that XP is acting flakey sometimes when I use explorer to navigate around directories, and that I was recently unable to install Sisoft's SANDRA diagnostics app. Otherwise, the system seems to be stable enough to use online and for basic text editing.

Sep 16, 2005I cannot ping xp computers. I can ping win2k machines all day long. The xp boxes are running
sp2, but I have a policy in effect that disables the firewall. I also have a
policy in effect that renames the administrator and guest accounts. IF the
firewall is disabled is there any reason that any of these machines would
not respond to a ping request. Wouldn't be a big deal, but my print tracking
app requires it. All XP machines can communicate with the network just fine.
I can ping anything from each XP machine successfully.

Sep 9, 2010When I opened up the case, the northbridge heatsink clip had snapped off. I put the case on it's side and reseated the heatsink, and put a case fan over it. I reformatted and installed winXP. The computer freezes a minute or so after entering windows. Also ran ubuntu linux off a usb stick and it would freeze after 5 or so minutes. Ran memtest and no errors after 9 hours, Speedfan s.m.a.r.t says the hard drive is fine. I booted into Safemode, and ran orthos small ffts cpu test, and no errors after an hour.

Nov 15, 2007I have a Gateway FX530XM desktop which came pre-loaded with Winxp mce. I believe that mce is the cause of a lot of problems I've been having so I want to install winxp pro as a second OS.I have created a new primary partition on my HD and set it as active then rebooted with the winxp pro cd in the drive.The cd gets read and I can see my HD access light blinking. The installer asks me for a cd with a qualifying OS because my winxp pro is an upgrade. I go through this and then the installer goes to the screen that says to select a partition to install to. The problem is that what is displayed is several lines saying there is no hard drive to install to. Quite strangely, if my external hard drives (LaCie or Seagate) are on, the installer sees them as partitions that I could install to. I can't use the external hd because I don't think I can boot to it. If I could boot to it I could probably copy the new install to my internal hard drive.

i think it's a compatibility issue but the problem is that i launched the same setup files b4 and they worked,,i have WINXP Pro SP2 and i think i've had this problem after i installed the SP2,,i right-clicked the setup file and i changed some of the compatibility options and it still doesn't work.

Mar 2, 2008I have trouble getting it to stop. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2 on a Dell Optiplex. About 50% of the time, when I want to shut down, I get past the "Saving your settings" screen, to "Windows is shutting down". And that's as far as it goes. I then have to manually turn off the computer. It doesn't matter whether I've selected "Shut Down" or "Restart". The other 50% of the time it shuts down like it's supposed to.
