I am making a disk of basic FREE applications for windows xp. I have some really good ones, and i have 150mb left, so was wondering if you all had any suggestions.THe applications i have so far should give you an idea of the apps i want on this cd:Tell me if there is a killer app that is free that i am missing, I would like to fill up the rest of the space, and i am not connected to the internet, so viruscan is not needed.

My dad runs a Quick-Basic program that does particle-physics calculations. He uses the command prompt to run the program. It worked fine on his old 486 (it printed the results when he hit cntrl+print-screen). Then he bought a windoze box with XP. The program still runs fine, you can see the results whizzing past. Upon starting Quicken 2004 Basic, I got a notification that I had to reinstall Quicken,Upon starting an uninstall of Quicken 2004, I got an Error 1316.A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:WINDOWSInstallerQuicken 2004.msl. I have used Windows install clean up, and have run a registry cleaner. I also have gone into the registry, and deleted anything pertaining to Quicken. No matter what I try, Quicken won't reinstall, because I can't uninstall the previous Quicken.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently underwent a clean install of both Win2k Pro & WinXP Pro. In both instances, the DM is reporting that the 'Multimedia Audio Controller' and the 'PCI Simple Communications Controller' are not correctly recognized (drivers not installed).I've done some searching online and many people suggest that a dial-up modem is the culprit behind the messages. In fact, there isn't a dial-up modem installed in my system, only a 10/100 NIC which works fine with both Windows native driver and the maker's driver.I've also searched for the PCI commun. control. drivers online to find that I have nothing to download. I'm not entirely sure what this controller does, although I can most likely find the multimedia audio controller. It's worth noting that XP is acting flakey sometimes when I use explorer to navigate around directories, and that I was recently unable to install Sisoft's SANDRA diagnostics app. Otherwise, the system seems to be stable enough to use online and for basic text editing.

I have tried every thing including installing from a CD, Installing from the Grisoft website, updating manually, and for some reason the AVG update manager will not work. Can someone recommend another Free Antivirus that is as easy to use and as automatic as AVG is, that I can install on her computer. This is an elderly woman that needs things as simple as possible. View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Windows XP Professional with SP3 and I'm the Administrator. Anyhow, I'm trying to execute a basic .exe MZ file from the cmd. I get "This program cannot be run in DOS mode". I don't understand why an .exe, the most basic one MZ cannot be run in dos mode. Is this a restriction set by the Administrator? (Maybe in control panel-administrative tools-local security policy?) I've done some reading and have heard that I may need to tweak some options by right clicking on the title bar of the cmd shell and changing something that has to deal with not letting windows interefere or that windows compatibility is turned on. However, I think that option is only for Windows 98 and is not available in winxp pro.

The one hard drive is for the system files (~13GB) and the other is for storage, user files, etc (~160GB). I figured that then I reinstalled Windows 2000 Server on the System disk, I would just have to assign the other disk a drive letter and be on my way. Instead, in the disk management console, I get "Disk 1 [the 160GB) Dynamic Unreadable" I can revert to a basic disk, but it says I will lose all my information. It is imperative that the data on this disk be recovered.

My computer is about 2 years old. In those two years, I had to re-install Windows XP and everything else on my computer...for reasons unknown...I recently performed a New Installation of Windows XP on my computer. I don't have alot of things installed on my computer. The total space all the programs in my Add and Remove programs file takes up is only 1GB. Since I had to start over and re-install everything and my programs only add up to 1GB, Shouldn't I have more free space ?

The router I have works perfectly fine and has been since I got it in November. It's just that every time I click on Mozilla, AIM, AIM Triton, or even Internet Expolorer nothing happens. I have tried right clicking too. Everything else on the computer works EXCEPT for those applications. I checked and the router is secured and working.

I finally got the error message to stop on startup and the computer worked fine but now when I access any windows based programs, windows explorer, my computer, control panel, IE 7, my computer puts the error message back up.
When i click "close" windows explorer does not go away, the error message just does but it still prohibits my access to these programs (which really really annoys me).
I can't seem to get much information on wacko.gif Just built a new rig that is running XP x64 with latest drivers and updates, specs are below. Installed my otf's (openType fonts) and have tried 2 different type managers (Extensis Suitcase and FontAgent Pro 4) to get my fonts to activate and they are not activating.
This lead me to check the windows font folder and I noticed that any OTF in the folder was not showing up in my applications (photoshop etc). So I double click on the fonts and I am getting a "the requested file /path to font/ was not a valid font file" message. I installed the fonts directly from my cd so I know the fonts are valid.
EXTREMELY ANNOYING problem I'm encountering... I'll turn on my PC and 1/3 times nothing will launch. What I mean is, I'll click on a shortcut and the little cursor will display the thinking symbol as if it's aunching, my HD (or cpu?) will click, then nothing. Nothing happens. Every single application is like this, including a Ctrl-Alt-Delete, I can't even launch task manager, or My Computer... NOTHING. Everything that is open currently works fine though, I can browse places in firefox, change songs in winamp etc. I just can't launch new applications or shutdown my computer. I'll go to start -> turn off computer -> shut down, and nothing happens. I have to manually force restart my PC everytime this happens and it's really getting bothersome. I don't know what to do guys or what could be causing this, I really don't want to format

I have a second PC at the office on XP SP2 and one at home on XP SP1 and on those I don't even see the window for the apps shutting down. On top of that the system can't take them down itself...I MUST click the "End Now" button.
View 13 Replies View Related2 days ago, I used add/remove programs then Norton Removal Tool to remove Norton AV, and replaced it with AVG Free. My PC seemed to work fine until yesterday: upon booting, AVG automatically tried to update and ended up reporting "something bad happened..."; Not sure if AVG issue is relevant but now I CANNOT OPEN FOLDERS or APPS!
Now about 9 times out of 10, when I try to open a file or app, the screen icons and background pic disappear momentarily, and nothing opens. If I manage to open a folder, it seems my PC hangs up similarly at the following task (sometimes I get my RCA Lyra icon suddenly showing up in the toolbar). BTW I experienced the exact same problem a couple of times before the AVG install but rebooting would always fix the issue. Not anymore! It took many reboots but I was able to get AdAware to run - found nothing - and Maintenance Mechanic 6 - showed PC Repair is needed but hangs once it gets to reading the disk index. I tried deleting Lyra, but it won't let me (hangs once I manage to open the add/remove program page).
I just finished a re-installation of windows on a fairly old computer. got windows installed through the original windows cd, but i have lost the drivers and applications cd. I cant do anything without any drivers. cant even hardwire to the router to d/l drivers.....any help??? anyone know where I can get a copy of the drivers/app cd? Its a gateway, so old, they dont really care enough to help.......any help would be much appreciated.
