I have been trying to help a friend whose computer with XP Home had never been updated. We got all 3 service packs installed but when I tried to go to the Windows Update page, it is always redirected to a non-scanning page for Windows 95. I have searched the registry for the URL it is redirected to without results. Something is redirecting Internet Explorer to the Win 95 page and I cannot figure out what or why.

When I try to update windows, I clck express, then I need to verify my copy of windows. When I click verify, another window comes up for "The Updates Are Being Downloaded And Installed" However it just hangs for 2 minutes and then it states "Failed To Install" I can't get any windows updates now. This just started approx. 2 months ago. I disabled firewall, and even tried in safe mode to no avail.

My Windows Updater has stopped working. I get the following message when I try to connect to the Update site through Help and Support: "Cannot display the page The page you are trying to view cannot be displayed because the server it resides on does not respond. Please try again later." I've tried to go to several XP update pages via Google and I get similar messages. Has Microsoft changed something and not told us?

I've been fighting with Microsoft update web site for about a week and a half now. All of the sudden when I go there to get updates, all I get is the option to click on Express or Custom. Then when it gets to the page where ya see the green balls moving across the page while its scanning my system to see if I need any updates, it just stays there and if I stay at that page too long, my PC locks up.
I'm running XP Pro with 500MHz and 256 in ram. I've tried to contact Microsoft tech guys that I can barley understand and they have no idea what's going on. It doesn't make any difference if its a fresh install of XP Pro with nothing else installed except for my wireless card so I can connect to the net, or the current system I'm running now.

laptop was infected with the Antivirus 2009 after surfing the web and I removed it using malwarebytes program. Then shortly after the laptop would show a blue screen, displaying "KERNEL STACK INPAGE ERROR" and then reboot. After the reboot, my laptop seemed to run fine, I downloaded AVG antivirus software to check if there was a boot sector virus (?) and after running the laptop for about 30 minutes, it showed the blue screen again and reboots. This kept on occuring.
Then I tried to reformat the laptop. The first time I tried to format it as FAT32, it got to about 60% before rebooting. The second time I managed to get past the formatting (FAT32 [quick])and I got onto the part of installing windows. About 20 minutes into the installation. A stop error appeared "STOP C0000218 Unknown Hard Error". Could the hard disk be corrupt

As of recently, I have reinstalled windows XP with service pack 1(Repair Installation) over my previous installation of XP with sp2. After doing so, I promptly attempted to download Service Pack 2 from Windows Update but all that happens when I access the Windows Update site is that it keeps asking me to download their "new software" and after it does so and registers the software the following message is displayed:

I have been getting many errors saying that this page cannot be displayed. I did do a Google search, a search of this forum, and I read the lengthy Microsoft article, which is way over my head. I am getting the impression that there can be many reasons for this happening. I do get a message that says Javascript DoNet Detect. I did do a Windows update right before this started happening.

On some pages I get a "Page Cannot be Displayed" error that usually covers up ads on the page, and its rather annoying. Also, on most webisites, I now need to press the back button 3 times in order for it to go back just one page. Im not sure what is causing this but it really isnt fun.And I cant seem to find where I can redownload ther complete version of IE 6.0 SP2, and I know Microsoft.com, but I cant find it under downloads.

I'm getting an error number: 0x80072EE7. This workstation has windows xp pro 64bit installed. It's a brand new dell precision 670 and i just turned it on and i'm getting this windows update error. We do have an Intranet in place and windows 2003 server. No proxy server and it should be open. So, my question is, is there some kind of compatibility problem here between windows xp 64bit and windows update? Or, perhaps windows 2003.

I go to Windows Update and get Error 0x8024402c. It seems this has something to do with a proxy setting. Since I am using DSL to get to MSN ISP, there are no proxy settings. Tried the Run CMD things that are suggested, and they are not recognized. Dug around with Google, and nothing there worked. Turned off McAfee Firewall, and it worked. Turned on firewall, and it would not let me in. This has never happened before. Had this firewall for years. Do not like to go on the web without a firewall, so I would appreciate any help with this.

My computer won't reboot. It started when I tried to update windows to sp2 and it had an error so it couldn't finish the update so it uninstalled whatever it installed. I rebooted and it goes into a loop, first the manufacture logo, the windows xp logo and it goes right back to the manufacture logo and starts that process again. I tried to go into safe mode and even the last best configuration to start and it still goes into this loop. What should I do? I don't want to reformat if I don't have too.
