Jun 2, 2006I'm concerned that I have unnecessary auto-start programs. I downloaded autoruns by sysinternals to help figure this out. I ran the software but now am unsure of what is necessary.

Mar 5, 2006I know that when you have windows 98 and you type msconfig in the run then you click on the tab saying startup you can remove unnecessary things from loading that will only slow down your computer.But on windows 2000 pro when I type msconfig it says it is not there - what do I use to remove unnecessary things from starting up that are not kneeded to run the computer ?And what should stay there and load at startup so the computer has no problems ?

Sep 1, 2005I have a problem with a laptop running XP pro SP2. Problem is, if I load a CD or DVD into the Drive they dont auto run they just spin up, and to launch I have to do it through explorer, Similarly with my Digital Camera, when I plug it in its supose to ask me what i want to do with the files but the same happens the Nikon program does not auto run, have tried the solutions mentioned here bon this board but still no go.

The start programs on list suddenly dont open, computer freezes up, did the error-checking but I cannot seem to get some vital prgrams to open up. I am running a couple of recent worm tools from Symantec and so far, nothing. Could this be a hardware problem or can someone tell me something I am missing?

Sep 21, 2007When I boot my external hard drive or put a cd into my laptop (running XP), a window pops up, like normal, asking which program I would like to run in order to view the multimedia on the drive. I used to have Nero and other programs like Jukebox, which I have uninstalled, but they still appear on this list as options, although they have no icon and do not work. How can I modify this list to remove the defunct programs? How can I have it not appear at all or run a defualt program automatically?

Jul 14, 2005I'm wanting to write a macro that will run when I start my computer or shutdown my computer. Here's the deal, I use netzero as my ISP. Netzero is constantly downloading ads that show up when I go to log on. Now the ads are using audio which is even more annoying. Anyway, I found out where the files are kept and I know the names. I'd like to write a file that auto exe's when I turn on or off the computer. It would also be nice to have a function key that would operate the auto delete. Any ideas on how to make this work?

Jun 5, 2008I have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

Unnecessary Registry Keys?
Jan 31, 2005A couple of days ago I was changing a few keys in my registry in order to fix my reoccurring DSO Exploit problem, when I noticed several keys for programs that I had uninstalled many, many moons ago. Why aren�t these keys removed when you uninstall the software? Is it safe to delete these keys, now that I have uninstalled the software?

Sep 29, 2005Everything in the start menu all programs is gone. I can't find things like Paint anywhere. The recycle bin has disappered off my desktop. All I did was uninstall yahoo! mail, yahoo! toolbar, dell media experience, yahoo! extras, and mtv optimizer off my computer. And I tried to uninstall the sims 2, but it didn't uninstall and i can't figure out how to do that. Then i noticed that the recycle bin had disappered off my desktop. Jan 25, 2007I have been having a problem and nothing seems to fix it. This is a little hard to explain, but here goes:
When I uninstall something the folder is still in the All Programs Menu. It contains that generic type of icon that means the program is not there. If I attempt to click on these empty folders, the sound mutes and the computer freezes. This can also happen if I click something on the desk top a certain way (sort of too fast) but this is rare.
