View 5 Replies View RelatedI have attached a copy of my HJT. Would really appreciate if it can be run through to see if there is anything that I can disable in my start up. The computer that I am using is being shared and I have become concerned over some stuffs. In Service Pack 2, a firewall is included right? Now there is this Zone Alarm downloaded too a few months ago. Is that a firewall program? There is also a Norton Personal Firewall that comes with the PC I know that the anti virus has expired but this firewall thing is still working right? At times like this, I wished I have more knowledge on computers but lucky me.I have you Guys at Tech Support to enlighten.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter installing Windows XP and all service packs and applications I am likely to use on it, I find it useful to disable services I am not likely to use on it to a bare minimum using MSCONFIG to stop additional CPU/MEM usage going on in the background. Here is a list of those services that I use, based on the fact that I have a cable broadband connection that is always on, and a Soundblaster Live Value Soundcard Go into Start Menu, Open RUN command, type MSCONFIG Goto SERVICES tab, select DISABLE ALL, APPLY, and check the following services to start with Windows and hit APPLY afterwards DHCP Client - AUTOMATIC Plug and Play - AUTOMATIC Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - AUTOMATIC Windows Audio - AUTOMATIC
There are also a few other services I use but not all the time, these are listed below and I would either put them on MANUAL if I use them sometimes or DISABLE them completely if I didn't use them at all Goto START MENU, PROGRAMS, ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS, SERVICES, and modify the following by right clicking...
I admit it...I moved my startup folder from C drive to D and now I am dead in the water. The computer is a Sony PCV RS420 with Windows XP Home Edition with all the updates. When I start the comp. I get "SONY" on the screen and thats it. Unresponsive to all F commands.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

This means that you do not need to rename all those shortcuts on your desktop . Here's how - Start Registry Editor. NOTE : For Windows 95, the Link value does not exist by default. Create the Link value as a Binary value, with a data value of 00 00 00 00. Restart the computer.

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have been having a problem and nothing seems to fix it. This is a little hard to explain, but here goes:
When I uninstall something the folder is still in the All Programs Menu. It contains that generic type of icon that means the program is not there. If I attempt to click on these empty folders, the sound mutes and the computer freezes. This can also happen if I click something on the desk top a certain way (sort of too fast) but this is rare.
I used to be able to click START, PROGRAMS, and right click and could put them in alpha order. In XP, I can't do that. Can someone tell me how to accomplish that another way?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'd like to modify my start menu. What I see is:Some of the programs I have recently run are at the bottom left of this menu. I have no idea what rules determine which programs get there, and which programs don't.
I can drag one of these programs above the line so it stays all the time. This is where my browser and e-mail program can be checked to appear when I modify properties.
How do I:Get a program that doesn't currently appear on these lists after I run
them to appear (or not to appear)?Move a folder that I use a lot to this menu?
I added some new software to my Pc (Win XP system) and now I notice that when I use the Start - All Programs - and view my list of programs I have 3 x Wide Columns but I can't se the 3rd column fully as the first 2 are really wide pushing the 3rd nearly off the screen.
How to narrow this view list.I tried to 'drag' the walls of the colunm but that option is not available.
I would like to put my icons back in the area that is reached via Start/All Programs/ and then associated
with the specific program. How to do it?
I want to remove the icons from my desktop.
I know I can delete those, but how do I get the icons back to the Programs
menu?
For example, once I drag the Word icon from Start/All Programs/Microsoft
Office
onto my desktop, the Word icon is gone from the All Programs list. How do I
get it back in that list?
When I open the START menu/ All Programs, the main list with all the program folders is there but the final files to click are blank, I only get a box, raised from what ever background is present at the time.
At this time the hidden icons on the taskbar open and close extremely slowly
when operated.
I found a temporary fix by deleting anything, so we make a new folder and immediately delete it. This corrects both problems instantly until the next reboot but needs to be done separately for each user that logs on.
I've got a few things that I can't stop from loading on start-up. I don't use the programs (or very rarely use them) so I just end up right-clicking on them on the toolbar to stop them. I tired going into the options for each program to stop them from loading on start-up but can't find a way to do it.
Is there a way to view what loads on start-up so I can remove them from the list?
I frequently use the MSconfig file to uncheck programs to keep them from starting up automatically at windows boot up. However, its not too long before the programs reload themselves and start up again on boot up. Im guessing that using these programs for some reason they load themselves up at startup. Most notably is the yahoo messenger and quicktime programs. I dont want them loading at start up but everytime i do use them, they put themselves back in the start up routine. Is there anyway to stop them from doing this?
