It had Windows vista in it and she had someone put Windows XP in it. It now has a virus and my friend wants Vista put back in it. I have a cd here that says TOSHIBA recovery and applications / drivers, Satellite A130/ A135 series, Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit. I put this cd in the rom and restarted. it did nothing. just loaded XP up again.

I got this dell inspiron 1721 from a friend, and it had Vista Home Premium. I wanted to get XP back, so I installed it and then the system was dual booting and it took up 85% of my hard drive. SO...I tried to reformat it and just install XP, but the only disk i had was for my (gateway xp media center) desk top so none of my dirvers installed and then the whole thing became a big mess. Now, I have XP installled with most of the drivers installed, but now I miss Vista, and when I try to install with my Vista recovery disk, I get an error: can not install install missing or corrupt file e:sourcesinstall.wim error 0x80070570... or something similar to that. I have been at this for days on end.

Isn't the problem going from vista back to xp an sata driver problem? If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 531 about a year or so ago for my wife. It came with Vista pre-installed. Everything was fine except that my wife kept complaining about the speed compared to my pc running XP. So, I checked the web to see if uninstalling Vista would be a problem and mostly I found that it was doable. So, I downloaded the necessary nVidia drivers and I was off. I unistalled Vista, reformated the HD and reinstalled XP Home SP1a (a purchased copy) so everything went just fine, at least so I thought. I now get frequent shutdowns and reboots. Some programs will not install properly (such as MS Office 2003)- word will open sometimes and sometimes I get errors saying that the program could not open for various reasons. I use Avira anti-virus and it has problems updating.

Under the 'add/remove programs' there is a list of programs, that i did uninstall a while back. So now when i click on uninstall on it in the 'add/remove programs' window, it does nothing but stay there. This must be because its still in the registry. The program is called 'Micrografx'.

the last time i formatted my hard drive was 2 years ago and i actually did this same thing. went from Windows Vista BACK to my XP.. i just cant remember how i did it.. i know i was in some sort of MS DOS looking thing.. and i chose to partition my Vista HD or whatever and straight up formatted it. the entire Vista was GONE and once it was gone, i restared or it restarted for me and i had my XP disc in the CD/DVD-Rom drive and it automatically started installing that on the new and clean partition.. Vista was gone, as well as everything i once had.. but i DID back everything important up...
i know SOMEONE out there knows what im talking about and how to do it this way without KILLDISK or any other software. i just want to use what i already have, like ive done in the past. format the partition tha Vista is on and start over fresh and new with XP. my computer came with XP on it and about 2 months later i received the Vista upgrade in the mail and upgraded to it.

Hi All. My problem is this. I have a legal copy of XP Pro (OEM) installed on this computer. The hardware is very dated (about 6yrs, AMD 1800+, AGP 2, PC2100 ram) and I want to upgrade to new stuff. So being a good citizen I called Microsoft and ask the question, "How do I legally install the legal copy on my new equipment while uninstalling it from the old?" The old hardware is not going to be reused, just to old and slow. Two reps from M$ told me that I could not use my legal copy with the new hardware while one said that I could but had to uninstall it somehow while online so they could verify and activate it for the new stuff. They never got around to telling me how to do that. I take that as a no that they won't allow the 2nd use. So what OS would you choose at the moment? I think I am going to try to reuse the current copy. If that doesn't work I'll repurchase, but which? XP Pro, XP Home, XP 64, Vista, Vista home, Vista 64? I understand that SP1 for Vista has gone into beta so it shouldn't be long to get that. If anyone has some input or experience I would greatly apperciate it. Does anyone think that this is wrong? I'm not trying to cheat M$, as I said it is a legal copy. Any Microsoft employees out there? If I want to reuse a piece of hardware no prob right? Seems to me to be the same thing. Anyway tell me what you think and thanks.
Mike
PS: By the way I use the machine for general purpose computing and gaming which is why I need to upgrade. I have been getting Fragged alot in UT2K4.

I'm going to start off with my whole process on how I did this. I am performing this in a Compaq SR5310F Desktop computer that originally came with Vista Home Premium:Within Vista, I opened the Disk Management utility. I then shrunk the volume and left myself with exactly 40GB of unallocated space for my XP installation. I then booted from my XP Pro cd, selected that unallocated space, formatted it using NTFS, then installed XP. It copied all the files fine, but when it reboots to launch the GUI of the installation, I get a message saying, "Error loading operating system"

I'm hoping someone will be able to help me. A few months ago, I down graded my laptop from Vista to Xp Pro. Since then If I watch a video, or play a game or do anything other than browse the web, my CPU usage spikes and the computer crashes. I upgraded the memory from 2gb to 4, but it didn't help. If anyone can help with this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I was fine with dealing with it before, but it's really starting to get irritating.

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit right now. However, I am not able to do a few things in it that I could do with XP. Therefore, I just ordered Windows XP Home Edition SP2. I was planning on uninstalling Vista and using XP, but I know you can dual-boot. I want to know if I can run both XP (32 bit) and Vista (64 bit) at the same time? And if so, how do I do it? They are both OEM versions, which I don't know if that matters. But if I can install XP without having to take off Vista,

I'm converting a Vista machine (purchased new with Vista on it) to XP for a customer of ours because the USB-to-serial-adapter that they need doesn't work with Vista.I bought an OEM (full) version of XP and put the CD into the machine. When the "Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP" screen pops up the "Install Windows XP" option is greyed out and doesn't allow me to begin the installation of the OS. If I click on the greyed out "Install Windows XP" option the PC just beeps.

I need help on choosing an OS. Right now I could use (and have access to) Vista Home Premium 32 bit, or XP pro 32 bit. First which of these two would be better(and why)Also if I could get my hands on either 64 bit, do you think that would be better (I have heard that 32 bit programs such as most games run better in 32 bit OS)?

My home computer gets used by four different people, all of which, apart from me, have almost no idea what they're doing. So, to protect my music collection from accidental deletion etc. I used the user access feature of vista so that only my user account could access the folder that contains all the music... I now cannot access this folder from XP... the data is still there, I've done my maths with free space on drive, but XP reckons the folder is empty, and says. Quote: d: music is not accessible Access is denied when I double click it..

I have a four year old eMachines that has expired and isn't worth repairing. I would like to use the OEM Windows XP Home restore disc from this computer to dual-boot my Vista machine (HP Pavilion a1730n). Is this:
1. possible?
2. ethical?
I want to do this because I can't use many of my programs on the Vista machine. If I can dual-boot the eMachines restore disc I can use Windows Home until vendors catch up with Vista.

I purchased the following system from Costco and was glad I was able to purchase the system complete without having to add components after the sale. I have tried and tried to get used to Vista (6 months) but as I am disabled and my brain doesn't always compute efficiently, I've had difficulties. Mostly with getting things recognized on the small network in my home. My other computers run XP and I wonder if there is not some conflict with the different operating systems trying to access the same files and printers? Finally I just decided to go back to XP..

I bought an HP Pavilion p6101f that came with Vista Home Premium installed on it. I bought an OEM version of Windows XP Pro with the intention of downgrading the operating system. I was told that our network, which runs mostly XP Pro machines, might suffer problems if we installed a computer not running Vista - I guess mismatched OS's might pose problems. In any event, after I booted to Vista, I could not see an option to "Install" XP upon seeing the associated dialog box after inserting the disc while in the middle of a successful Vista session. I then tried to boot to the XP CD, in order to install XP and then restore the system.I kept getting the Blue-Screen of Death.
The computer will begin to boot Fedora (Linux), Windows 7 repair disk, and maybe some others - but not XP Pro.
I want to install Windows XP Pro on my buddy's computer that came with Vista, but I am physically incapable of doing so.
