This time I will give more details. My audio programs work fine playing discs. With face talk or anything on the internet e.g. Accu Radio I get no sound.I have an Acer tower, wxp (up to date) and use Firefox. This problem started about a month ago and it has me stumped.
View 2 RepliesAfter long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi normally run on a linspire pre-loaded machine, but due to the heatsink on its way out have been using my secondary backup windows machine: http://littlurl.com/aw9rw there has been no issue for a while, however about 2 weeks going into 3 now.i've not been able to hear any sounds out of my speakers (Internet, cnn news, etc.)except if i used windows media player, cd's and any internal/preloaded sounds worked fine, as well as any 'testing'no yellow ! or errors were seen, or are seen currently.i began to muck about in the system files,the ultimate troubleshooter is an awesome program.and ended up tossing the system restore disks in.which seemed to just place another load of the os onto the hd.as a simple glance into the file system shows an owner and fred flintstone -(previous admin i was working under) besides the 'new' addition of mine.is it possible to have overlapping or multiple layers of an os on the same hd like this?i have sound only through wmp still.have downloaded and burned a copy of gparted to facilitate a clean sweep of the hd if needed to do a fresh/clean install.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems)
1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine'
2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen.
3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall.
I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
OS is Windows XP. The computer is 6 years old & have never had problems. Recently I'm unable to access internet Explorer. The white page appears and the "connecting" message...and there it stays. View 9 Replies View RelatedMy system specs: Win XP Home with SP1.I am having problems connecting to the internet from programs such as msn messenger, mozilla firefox,various ftp programs and updates.Only IE (6.0) and WindowsUpdate are the programs with internet access.When I try to ping on any IP address (except 127.0.0.1), I am getting the error 65:"PING: transmit failed, error code 65." At the time this problem started:
1. the computer had quite a few viruses on it (like DerBiz/Trojan.Win32.Dialer.gp).
2. we tried to install SP2, but it caused problems with ZoneAlarm and system became very slow. So we uninstalled it.
If I remove Internet Explorer 7 from programs will it revert back to Internet explorerE 6?I just had Windows reinstalled by someone and not sure if that would work?

I am getting Windows cannot open the local policy database. Access to database has been denied. when trying to access security settings from Admin Tools. although my userid is on the Administrators group with full privileges. my %systemroot% is set to share, everyone with full access. I can send a HJT log if requested. what can I do? there are also many internet pages that are no longer loading (says cookies disabled) even tho they are on the trusted list, and even with BitDefender and ZoneAlarm shut down. There are no error messages, the download screen looks normal apart from there being not download speed or anticipated time to download. The pages fly but nothing happens. Eventually I just cancel. Restore points before the date have failed. Reinstalling SP2 did not help. Un-installed recent installs around that time to no effect. I have even tried using other ISPs with all firewalls and AV turned off. Internet Explorer is the browser.

Limewire, and .torrent files.It use to be somewhere around 55kb/s, and recently it dropped to about 1 kb/s.I ran lots of spyware/virus scans, but it didn't help, it's still downloading really slowly. They quickly close and the security box pops up tell me to unblock them, I then put all the programs i want on the Allow list. However it seems like all programs that use the internet will close as soon as they are open.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 but it seems like I can only use programs that use the internet in SP1.

I experience the same problem with msconfig. I have a feeling that it's a virus trying to keep me from running programs which could find and delete it.I cannot run msconfig, TDS-03, The Cleaner, Norton Anti-virus, or HiJack This unless I am in safe mode. AdAwareSE and Spybot:S&D do work and I have used them to fix all problems that they found.
