This time I will give more details. My audio programs work fine playing discs. With face talk or anything on the internet e.g. Accu Radio I get no sound.I have an Acer tower, wxp (up to date) and use Firefox. This problem started about a month ago and it has me stumped.
After long periods of my internet connection being idle (2+ hours usually), all programs requiring internet access are unable to connect. By idle I mean I leave to run some errands with no programs other than Zone Alarm running. My DSL modem still has all lights flashing and active. There are a couple other scenarios where this occurs as well. Ex. I'm playing WoW for extended periods but not using the internet through any other program, then upon alt-tabbing no other applications are able to connect to the internet even though WoW is still connected and functioning. Rebooting the router/modem doesn't fix it, but rebooting the comp does.
i normally run on a linspire pre-loaded machine, but due to the heatsink on its way out have been using my secondary backup windows machine: http://littlurl.com/aw9rw there has been no issue for a while, however about 2 weeks going into 3 now.i've not been able to hear any sounds out of my speakers (Internet, cnn news, etc.)except if i used windows media player, cd's and any internal/preloaded sounds worked fine, as well as any 'testing'no yellow ! or errors were seen, or are seen currently.i began to muck about in the system files, the ultimate troubleshooter is an awesome program.and ended up tossing the system restore disks in.which seemed to just place another load of the os onto the hd.as a simple glance into the file system shows an owner and fred flintstone -(previous admin i was working under) besides the 'new' addition of mine.is it possible to have overlapping or multiple layers of an os on the same hd like this?i have sound only through wmp still.have downloaded and burned a copy of gparted to facilitate a clean sweep of the hd if needed to do a fresh/clean install.
In my windows XP pro SP2, i disable the sounds in sounds and audio devices in control panel. but still i heard the sound when clicking on folders in windows XP.
I'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems) 1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine' 2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen. 3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall. I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
OS is Windows XP. The computer is 6 years old & have never had problems. Recently I'm unable to access internet Explorer. The white page appears and the "connecting" message...and there it stays. Also, I'm unable to download .net versions 2.0 through 3.5, which appears to prevent me from downloading other programs. One tech tried to assist me remotely & ultimately suggested
Do you have any clue why only some of my programs can access the internet? I do not use a firewall, nor a router.I use Windows XP Home Edition. However, for some reason, Windows (or something) just BLOCKS most of my programs. I have tried many things, and still, nothing has worked.
I have downloaded numerous programs like some online poker games for example and when trying to open the program it says there is an internet connectivity problem but anoher program I downloaded a long time ago connects to the internet just fine, I've tried everything I can think of like turn off the fireall but that does not work So I'm hoping somebody out there can help me,
Using Windows XP Home Explorer 6 - some of my programs can't access the Internet - they can't update or validate themselves. Email (outlook express) works fine and Explorer works but programs that need to access the internet like AutoCAD return an error message that there is no internet connection found.
After start today (previous shutdown was reported as clean, done by my wife, she did not notice anything unusual and I trust her), wery weird behaviour. System looks like it is somehow running out of resources but it is not, at least I think ..
My system specs: Win XP Home with SP1.I am having problems connecting to the internet from programs such as msn messenger, mozilla firefox, various ftp programs and updates.Only IE (6.0) and WindowsUpdate are the programs with internet access. When I try to ping on any IP address (except 127.0.0.1), I am getting the error 65:"PING: transmit failed, error code 65." At the time this problem started: 1. the computer had quite a few viruses on it (like DerBiz/Trojan.Win32.Dialer.gp). 2. we tried to install SP2, but it caused problems with ZoneAlarm and system became very slow. So we uninstalled it.
If I remove Internet Explorer 7 from programs will it revert back to Internet explorerE 6?I just had Windows reinstalled by someone and not sure if that would work?
Every program I attempt to uninstall gives me an error message, the most common being "Cannot open install.log" Obviously something has gone wrong - what to do? Running XP
Unable to install ANY programs or updates on my pc.There have been changes made to the permissions, network sharing and connections. I am getting Windows cannot open the local policy database. Access to database has been denied. when trying to access security settings from Admin Tools. although my userid is on the Administrators group with full privileges. my %systemroot% is set to share, everyone with full access. I can send a HJT log if requested. what can I do? there are also many internet pages that are no longer loading (says cookies disabled) even tho they are on the trusted list, and even with BitDefender and ZoneAlarm shut down. I have knocked up against this for 3 days, but do not seem to be making progress.
Unable to download any programs. But some updates seem to work. There are no error messages, the download screen looks normal apart from there being not download speed or anticipated time to download. The pages fly but nothing happens. Eventually I just cancel. Restore points before the date have failed. Reinstalling SP2 did not help. Un-installed recent installs around that time to no effect. I have even tried using other ISPs with all firewalls and AV turned off. Internet Explorer is the browser.
After using Dr.Web Cleant it to clean up my xp laptop, it got worst. The laptop loads up but all that i see is the desktop background. No Start bar, not programs on desktop, shortcuts don't work .e. "windows"+R, "windows"+E) ONLY TASK MANAGER OPENS with CRTL+ALT+DEL.
"If I look at my photos on my computer, I lose internet connection immediately. So I can't crop, alter pics while online either. If I click on a picture to save it on the net, I lose connection. Meanwhile, I open my itunes, play music and all is fine with my internet connection. I can have many windows going, etc etc but just can't open up any picture program.
It's just happening in P2P programs, eg. Limewire, and .torrent files. It use to be somewhere around 55kb/s, and recently it dropped to about 1 kb/s.I ran lots of spyware/virus scans, but it didn't help, it's still downloading really slowly. If I download something straight of a link on a website, then it's really quick, still about 55kb/s.
because both Windows (XP) and Internet Explorer have really slowed down during the last several days. I have updated and used AVG, Spybot S&D and Webroot's Spy Sweeper but have found no virus or spyware infestation.
After I upgrade to SP2 and restart my system all my usual programs boot up,AIM,Windows Live Messenger,IE . They quickly close and the security box pops up tell me to unblock them, I then put all the programs i want on the Allow list. However it seems like all programs that use the internet will close as soon as they are open.I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling SP2 but it seems like I can only use programs that use the internet in SP1.
I am running on windows XP SP2 integrated. I realised that whenever I start my PC,windows does not respond(i.e. when I click on my internet explorer and all other applications / programs, they do not respond).I have to wait for at least 10-15 mins or restart 2 to 3 times, then windows can respond.I really do not know what is going on.I have scanned my PC with noadware but found nothing.Should I reformat my PC or perform a system restore? I am currenting using Intel Pentium III processor with 801 MHz,256MB of RAM.
I cannot get to System Restore from Start > Programs > Accessories .No Accessories folder in Program Files folder. Search for System restore shows a shortcut to it and when clicked gets me to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsAccessories.I haven't changed any settings on my PC. Windows Update got downloaded automatically yesterday.I tried to do system restore to an earlier date but it was unsuccessful. I'm the only user so I boot straight into my account and I'm the only one using my PC.
I recently disabled Flash after reading how to on one of the threads,I wanted to stop all the banners and ads, which were hassling with my browsing speed. All seemed well, but now I can't always get some online games to load, and I am also unable to watch some iPlayer programs, noticeably 4OD. I just get a Loading page.Any chance of an idiots guide run through to put my puter back to how it was please, default I guess?I have unpicked the kill that I found, somewhere.Other than that, I'm stumped.
I am missing DirectX on my computer, and cannot run some of my games because of that, Can you tell me where I can download DirectX 9.0. The sites I went to are only upgrades for older versions.
I'm getting a Message when trying to install new programs Trying msn Messenger 7.5 as example.I'm in an account with administrator rights (this is indicated on the control panel / user accounts)Message:"You do not have the permissions required to install.."I was getting a 1601 message - windows installer not available.(I went into services and the "windows INstaller" was set to manual, I set it to automatic.)
when ever i open up a program and try to intiate opening a file, say i'm trying to author a dvd, and i want to open up the file that i want to work on, well, the whole program disappears, as if i closed it, i thought it might be just one program, but it seems to be a few programs, don't know whats going on
I am having terrible time getting rid of things on my computer.I have windows XP home, and have the following spyware and virus protection programs: Avira Antivir Personal, Comodo Firewall Pro, Spybot Search & Destroy The first time I ran them they picked a up a little here and there. But its very obvious the spyware is still there.
okay. just got the morrowind expansion packs. (bethesda softworks). installed tribunal without a fuss. tried to install bloodmoon...then it whips out this "I/O Device error crap" on me.
I've recently started worrying about spyware and viruses now my connection is being leeched by some outside source.I started downloading programs to remove spyware, viruses, and trojans.I open certain programs, they are shut down immediately. I experience the same problem with msconfig. I have a feeling that it's a virus trying to keep me from running programs which could find and delete it.I cannot run msconfig, TDS-03, The Cleaner, Norton Anti-virus, or HiJack This unless I am in safe mode. AdAwareSE and Spybot:S&D do work and I have used them to fix all problems that they found.
I do not know what really is the problem. The taskbar buttons could not be seen when i have other programs and windows running. I can only switch from one window to another using the Alt+Tab button. I am using windows XP Home. I've made a printscreen of the problem.
