I am missing DirectX on my computer, and cannot run some of my games because of that, Can you tell me where I can download DirectX 9.0. The sites I went to are only upgrades for older versions.

Select Start > Run, and type "dxdiag".2. When the dialog appears find the last tab, and click "Override" (or somthing similar).2. Just type your Value (be careful, dont type a value that your graphics card or monitor can't do!). Click Ok, and that is it!Remember you changed the refresh rate only for DirectX Applications, not for OpenGL.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI consider myself somewhat experienced with computers in general and Windows in particular (been using computers since the DOS days), but there is a thing with windows that rather baffles me. The thing is that since some time ago, whenever I start a game or any other DirectX program in full screen it resizes all opened windows to that program�s screen resolution. Even dxdiag full screen tests seem to cause it.
Once the full screen program exits or if I alt-tab out of it, all mine previously maximized windows are resized to fit in whatever resolution the DirectX app was running but they seam to think they are still maximized (2 squares instead of one on the maximize button and I need to press it twice to actually maximize them again, and also their size when not maximized seam to be changed to the app's resolution as well I normally run my desktop at 1280x1024 resolution
I'm having trouble w/forwarding e-mails that have pix. Does that have anything to do w/directx? When I did a search on my computer for directx it said read only is that what it should be? Basicly what is directx/what does it do?
Just formatted my desktop and installed a fresh copy of XP Pro on it. I did a search on google and found that some people said XP does not support directX 10, but then when you go to the directX website to download it, Windows XP IS under the list of "Supported Operating Systems". So is 10 supported by XP, or do I have to download 9.0c?

After playing for a LONG time, the game briefly paused and I saw some visual artifacts, textures were all messed up etc. But I loaded a savegame and it worked fine after that. (I admit it, I had tried overclocking my GPU but that was over three weeks ago and I reset the settings back to normal.) Then, after about an hour, I used alt+tab to check out a walkthrough, then alt+tabbed back and it took much longer than normal to get back into the game...

View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm sure I am overlooking something obvious, but numerous recent problems with my system seem to be (hopefully) tied to the same source.I just don't know what it is.I am running windows XP home, service pack one (I have recently reverted back from SP2 thinking it may be the cause of the problems)
1) Any and all telnet type programs refusing to connect to any host (telnet, zmud, gmud, etc) In the case of zmud I can observe that my computer is in no way interfacing with another machine. telnet error is 'unable to contact host machine'
2) Windows media player (version 10) is unable to retrieve album info. Instead I immediately get a standard IE 'page cannot be displayed' screen.
3) Unable to register for many programs such as Gracenote. In the case of gracenote I recieve a 'socket open failed' error message.I am not currently running any firewall.
I only hae a 56k internet connection, so the instantaneous negative connection responses many of my programs display make it fairly obvious that this is a problem with my machine. I hope it is some silly xp setting I need to change.
I've reinstalled XP and some icons are missing from the "Start"/"all programs" menu. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are missing. I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. The icons do display on the "all programs" list for the other user). Any suggestions as to how to get them back on the "all programs" menu?

I checked and made sure I was logged onto my account and not the guest one. The only problem is that even though all the previously installed programs are still in the Program files, Windows does not know they are there. When I was able to get back online, there are all sorts of problems with my McAfee (i.e. I all of a sudden have no virus protection and I can't reinstall it). Also, when I go to add/remove programs, there is nothing there. Other programs are still installed in my computer and the only one I seem to be having a problem with is the McAfee, but I can't even view a list of programs that are installed on my computer. It was "ucmore search" or something like that... I was getting a new firefox window with ads on it every single minute. When it got me tired, I installed Ad-aware and run it. Automatically quarantine everything it spotted.Even then, the problem was still there. I am getting Windows cannot open the local policy database. Access to database has been denied. when trying to access security settings from Admin Tools. although my userid is on the Administrators group with full privileges. my %systemroot% is set to share, everyone with full access. I can send a HJT log if requested. what can I do? there are also many internet pages that are no longer loading (says cookies disabled) even tho they are on the trusted list, and even with BitDefender and ZoneAlarm shut down. There are no error messages, the download screen looks normal apart from there being not download speed or anticipated time to download. The pages fly but nothing happens. Eventually I just cancel. Restore points before the date have failed. Reinstalling SP2 did not help. Un-installed recent installs around that time to no effect. I have even tried using other ISPs with all firewalls and AV turned off. Internet Explorer is the browser.

Search for System restore shows a shortcut to it and when clicked gets me to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersStart MenuProgramsAccessories.I haven't changed any settings on my PC. Windows Update got downloaded automatically yesterday.I tried to do system restore to an earlier date but it was unsuccessful. I'm the only user so I boot straight into my account and I'm the only one using my PC.
