I recently had to do a recovery that refreshed the Windows files. The only problem is that even though all the previously installed programs are still in the Program files, Windows does not know they are there. If I click on Start and then go to all programs, they do not show up on that list nor do they show up if I go to Add/Remove programs.Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall all the programs?

I have two almost identical (one of them has only 40Gb drive) Dell 8400 computers that worked very well together networked till yesterday. Both of them have same OS version including updates.I had to do a PC restore on computer A and since then Computer B doesn't recognize computer A. I went through Network Wizard, made sure the computer names are unique and the workgroup name is identical on both machines. Computer B doesn't even show local shared directories anymore.Computer A finds computer B without any problems.BTW, Computer B works fine otherwise; I can access Internet, a network drive without any problems. I did hardware ping test and board test and they all pass.

i got a series of really bad viral infection on my computer. My virus programs took care of the viruses but also deleted some of the start up software that is used to boot up my computer correctly. as a last ditch effort I used the system restore function on my computer to reboot it back to a previous configeration. The computer booted back to its original out of the box configuration and I lost all my computer files (but on the flip side my computer was working perfectly now that this was done)
I take the computer to the repair shop so that they can do a deep memory scan to recover my files. They find some of the files and put them in a file folder located on my desktop. i am told by the techie working on my computer that there is a series of .dll errors at the start of windows and that they are the result of a viral infection (Obviously the system restore i did did not do its job of ridding me of the viruses. I did not notice the .dll errors when i initially did the system restore, but that doesn't mean that they weren't there)
This is a machine running on windows XP SP2 1200mz AMD.After restoring system to an earlier date, I am unable to run any program that requires a user profile. I believe that a .dll is currupted. I am not sure but I don't think that the registry is finding the wups2.dll file. I tried the regsvr32 command but could'nt get that to work. Outlook Express will ask for a user profile and password. This never happened before.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Win XP Pro with SP2 (standard setup). The problem: A couple of the icons in the system tray don't show up on re-boot. Specifically, the 'safely remove hardware' icon, and a backup utility called 'second copy' that runs on startup. When I 'restore' to the exact same point, everything is fine. When I reboot, gone again. And when they are gone, I can't run the backup utility (it won't start). What is different about the restore utility that makes it work if I restore to the same exact point. This all started with I tried to uninstall and reinstall Norton Utilities (which seems to be working fine).
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an emachines bought in 2004... a few months ago we replaced the motherboard, videocard, upgraded to 1.5g ram, new fan, power supply etc. I'm an avid World of Warcraft: TBC user, and no its not the greatest graphics but worked fine for me... here recently it started blue screening and saying it was dumping physical memory. so i did system restor to a few months prior because i knew it was fine then, but after the restore it was missing .dll's for certain programs and wow was damaged horribly. i then attempted to restore back to today and all my restore points were gone... ran msconfig to load base apps and then attempted to use an older restore disk to start over... my main concern at that time was that i wanted to reformat c: but it told me i had to dismount the volume first.. and when i answered "y" to the "force dismount" question it told me it couldn't... it gets worse too.. now i can't even load windows because it tells me invalid partition table. i don't have the cd for xp (was preinstalled) and my original restore disks are useless (the silver has flaked completely off in spots even after careful storage for past few years.)...

Just did an upgrade install of Win2k on a Win98SE system. I've had this computer for ages and did not want to do a clean install.The upgrade went fine except for one problem.In my add/remove program section all of my previously installed programs are missing.They were not deleted, just missing from add/remove.How do I restore these programs back into the add/remove program section?

I've reinstalled XP and some icons are missing from the "Start"/"all programs" menu. Both Outlook Express and Internet Explorer are missing. I was able to locate them using "search" then open and pin to start menu. (The search function displays i.e. shortcuts for "administrator", "guest" and the other user, but not for me. The icons do display on the "all programs" list for the other user). Any suggestions as to how to get them back on the "all programs" menu?

It does this all the time, even in safe mode. Symantec has mentioned that I should turn off NIS2005 and try system restore. If it then works it is a Microsoft issue. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.
