I just did a fresh install of XP Pro SP2. It installed and everything was fine until I had to rebooted it a second time. I now get the following message:Windows could not start becasue the following file is missing or corrupt:<Windows root>system32hal.dll Please re-install a copy of the above file

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have an emachines bought in 2004... a few months ago we replaced the motherboard, videocard, upgraded to 1.5g ram, new fan, power supply etc. I'm an avid World of Warcraft: TBC user, and no its not the greatest graphics but worked fine for me... here recently it started blue screening and saying it was dumping physical memory. so i did system restor to a few months prior because i knew it was fine then, but after the restore it was missing .dll's for certain programs and wow was damaged horribly. i then attempted to restore back to today and all my restore points were gone... ran msconfig to load base apps and then attempted to use an older restore disk to start over... my main concern at that time was that i wanted to reformat c: but it told me i had to dismount the volume first.. and when i answered "y" to the "force dismount" question it told me it couldn't... it gets worse too.. now i can't even load windows because it tells me invalid partition table. i don't have the cd for xp (was preinstalled) and my original restore disks are useless (the silver has flaked completely off in spots even after careful storage for past few years.)...
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm having some issues with one of my PC's. After about a minute at desktop, it would completely lock up. Using msconfig, I was able to isolate (at least) one of the things causing it: a service called 'Windows Management Instrumentation'. Keeping it, and it's co-responding service, unchecked in msconfig, stops the freeze, and allows my computer ot seemingly work as if all is well. However, I'm skeptical that is the case.
Also, another problem occurred yesterday....all of a sudden my admin account no longer displayed on the login screen. I had taken my PC to a repair shop last week, and the guy created a new account...this account has administrator priveledges, just as the old one does. However, it is missing a lot of files and documents that were from my old account. When booting in safe mode, both accounts still display. Why is this?
Another question, does anyone know what the service CaReTaKeR-CT NetMgr is/does? It looks a bit seedy, so I've currently disabled it.
I have a Dell M1710 XPS laptop, recently because of a power cut it failed to boot because of a corrupt file. I've re-installed windows XP (for some reason I was not able to boot from CD and repair), now obviously alot of the programs that are still on the hardrive will not open because they need to be re-installed. Unfortunatly I'm stuck on a ship with very little internet access and no CD's to re-install stuff with. I don't know if its possible to get these things working
Anyway my major concern is I've lost alot of my I'tunes music and photos that were on my hard-drive before. They seem to be still on the harddrive as I still have only 10% of the drive left as free space and yet when I double click on C: drive on my computer there shows only 32 gigs of stuff in folders there and I cannot find any of my music (program files seem to be unaffected, there still on the drive as normal even if im unable to run them). Is there anyway to find these missing folders/files that still seem to be on my harddrive but not visable.
I restored my computer to an earlier point, onlt a few days which was sucsessful but when the desktop came up, it told me that activeshield was missing which is my mcafee virus scan. I uptated off the website and it installed it but my question is,why was it removed in the first place?

The only problem is that even though all the previously installed programs are still in the Program files, Windows does not know they are there. If I click on Start and then go to all programs, they do not show up on that list nor do they show up if I go to Add/Remove programs.Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall all the programs?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe pc is xp sp2... apon latest restart all icons on desktop and start menu all go to the same program a solitaire game. tried avg and even restore but something has blocked all but this one program. restore reads systam restore log missing but i can get to it, it seems to be blocked also. internet reachable through open with/choose other program and can check mail but thats about it. anyone know if theres a new bug out there doing this do i now have a 1200 dollar solitaire machine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis is a machine running on windows XP SP2 1200mz AMD.After restoring system to an earlier date, I am unable to run any program that requires a user profile. I believe that a .dll is currupted. I am not sure but I don't think that the registry is finding the wups2.dll file. I tried the regsvr32 command but could'nt get that to work. Outlook Express will ask for a user profile and password. This never happened before.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am running Win XP Pro with SP2 (standard setup). The problem: A couple of the icons in the system tray don't show up on re-boot. Specifically, the 'safely remove hardware' icon, and a backup utility called 'second copy' that runs on startup. When I 'restore' to the exact same point, everything is fine. When I reboot, gone again. And when they are gone, I can't run the backup utility (it won't start). What is different about the restore utility that makes it work if I restore to the same exact point. This all started with I tried to uninstall and reinstall Norton Utilities (which seems to be working fine).

I recently downloaded some drivers as I was trying to install a new printer who's software would'nt load. This did'nt solve the problem. I decided to get a printer that I had had before, Brother DCP-110C as I knew this had worked well. I tried to install yesterday (28th July) but could'nt and my PC keeps switching itself off near the end of the installation. I then thought I would use System restore to go back to a happier time when I had the first Brother printer. previous saved point wont let me to restore
View 4 Replies View RelatedI was messing around with CCleaner and deleted something to do with an old version of McAfee (which isn't even on my computer anymore) from the registry. Yes, it was stupid to mess with the registry I guess because I failed to make the backup and now my computer won't boot. I get the blue screen that says there was an error 0x0000008e, or something like that.
I have tried using F8 and choosing the last known good configuration but it doesn't work. Also, I can boot into safe mode and I tried running a system restore but after it finished and I rebooted, it said that I couldn't restore from that point.I haven't really tried another restore because I am a little afraid to do anything. I don't want to risk losing access in safe mode because I need to be able to back up some of my files if in case I have to do a reformat.
My computer had a turn yesterday and kept giving me the blue screen error on start-up, so using my windows disk I managed to run chkdsk. So I can get on now, but certain things won't run, like Media Centre, Firefox has forgotten my settings and also my iriver doesn't get acknowledged when I plug it into a USB port.So I am trying to run System restore to go back a couple of days.I can get into restore, and go through everything up to the point where you click 'next' in order to restore it.I click on next but nothing happens, it just stays there.

However, when I got to my profile a message window came up that said unable to restore to (chosen date/time) etc. I chose 3 other restore points over the last month, thinking it might be some recent problem, still a no go. I have 8.5 gig disk space and turning off RESTORE , rebooting and creating a new restore point did not solve the problem--the message remained the same. Other than reinstalling XP I am at a loss as to what to do. I do not have a need to restore at the moment but I may need to in the future.

I bought an external HD, completely backed up everything important and was about to run a system restore as I had created a manual restore point following the resolution of previous problems. The link to the thread is found below. However, when I use the system restore wizard, I can only select November 8th, 9th, and 10th and today is the 10th. I created the manual restore point back in March 2006. I cannot change the month and I have no idea where to find manual points.

My computer has restore dates so I picked one from the previous day. When my computer re-boted it said that it was not able to restore to an earlier date because some files maybe corrupted. Said to restate the computer and trying restoring again. I did but had same results. Any restore date I pick, it says it is unable to restore.

The last several days I have been trying to use same and go back at least a month, but when I click on the arrow to to the left side of the restore box to go to the previous month it will not do same, nor will it go to the next month when I click on the right side arrow. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a toshiba laptop A105 sieries. I got a real nasty worm and could not get rid of it.I then stuck in the restore disc and did a complete erase of my harddrive. I am now trying to install the operating system off of the restore disc and I am not able to. Can someone please help me. I have went into the bios and set it to boot from dvd rom but then all it does is say recovering. 32 min later when it is done I try to boot from hard drive it ask me if I want to start windows normally. I select it and then nothing happens. I go back to bios and it says bood from hard drive but no go. If I go back into bios and have it boot from the recover disc it's the same thing all over. I don't know what I am doing and am a little confused no, really confused.
