System Getting Hung Up At Welcome Screen And Won't Continue?
Jul 6, 2005
I have Windows XP on a Compaq laptop. When I turn it on, it attempts to boot up. It starts out normally, flashing the Compaq logo, then the Microsoft logo but seems to get hung up there and won't continue. The MS logo stays on the screen. There are no error messages. Is this a virus? If it is, how do I remove a virus if I can't log on?

My dad installed some program on his computer, didn't like it, and uninstalled it. After that, his computer crashed and I haven't been able to get passed the screen with Windows XP Professional and the moving blue bar and then it freezes. Last Good Configuration doesn't work; it ends up at the same place and the blue bar stops also. I System Restored it to the day before he installed the program; once again, the blue bar stops moving.Could this be a hardware issue? Virus (unlikely)?

I have tried repeatedly to download Webroot Window washer ver 6.5 to my wife's computer. For some reason the download arrives with the select language menu vacant. When you click on the dropdown menu, it is also blank. You cannot continue past this screen. My wife has McAfee Virus Scan and Spybot Search and Destroy plus the firewall that Microsoft supplies. Could these interfere with the download? If so, how do I temporarily disable them so I can download Window Washer. As an alternative, can someone suggest another program which will function like Window Washer?

A friend of mine gave me a few computers- because his office was upgrading all of their systems- I reformatted many of them and installed windows me (they are too slow to support xp), but I am having a problem with one. Originally it had windows 2000 pro as the os( I didn't have the password to log-into the computer) So I ran fdisk, formatted the hard drive, then tried to install the new os but I keep getting the error message upon booting that "invalid system disk, remove then press any key to continue".
I thought the cd-rom was bad so I replaced it, I changed the boot sequence, used a floppy to boot, even got the hard drive manufacturer's utility program to prep the drive for the os but even that doesn't work. Am I missing something? Does the fact that I didn't have the password to enter the computer have anything to do with this? I used this same method for installing me on all the other systems and they are fine, but this one is an issue.

I need to use the "control-alt-delete" to end a program that is hung-up and not responding and I then get the dialog box asking me if I want to send a message to Microsoft telling them about the problem. First of all, is there really any reason to send this message, and if not, how can I prevent this dialog box from showing up again?

I've been running my XP SP3 machine all merrily along, with three internal HD's (two large partitioned) and yesterday my Start - Restart hung on Windows Is Shutting Down. I did a hard restart, ran Start - Shutdown successfully, after startup tried Start - Restart again and got same hang. So, hard reboot, Start - Shutdown...OK, Startup, Start - Restart worked! Shut down machine for the night, powered on this morning, then Start - Restart... same hang. I remember in W95SE the problem with large drives, but I've never seen that in XP.
So, what did I do new? Installed ProShow Gold software, which required disabling my CD RW drive to find my CD/DVD RW drive correctly. The only other funny thing I see is burning a disk of JPEG's either in NERO or Picasa, then putting the disc back in the CD/DVD drive and not being able to read it. I get "wrong function", the eject button doesn't work, so have to eject from Explorer. Other computers read it fine. When I installed NERO the CD DVD RW drive was made INCD auto-formatable, so that screen pops up whenever a blank is inserted. I just dismiss it. But this symptom looks like XP thinks the disk I burned was written in MRW format, not just ISO. Also, Explorer changes the My Computer icon for the drive from CD/DVD to just CD when the newly burned DVD is inserted - weird.

I don't know what happened, all the sudden while my daughter was in the middle of being on the internet website called evergirl.com (kids games & talk like barbie.com) the computer hung up and got real sluggish. After she was able to close completely out of it I restarted the computer. It came on slowly and gave an error message, as I went to write it down, it blanked off (it said something about unable to open *some* local files and something about a *damaged* registry key. Then it opened to a desktop from like when we first got the computer, most my files are their but the shortcuts are gone off the desktop and mozilla asked if I wanted to import all my data from OE.

The computer has sluggish and aggravating moments. Frequently, Internet Explorer Windows get hung-up, and will not close or open. Tabs get stuck and won't change. Boot-up time seems slow. Connection tests indicate speed is optimal, but IE remains slow and clunky. A HJT scan has been performed. I may correct any issues. Also, if there is any fat to be trimmed, oo.

I've been trying to reinstall XP Pro sp2 for the past several days. I have:
1. Used the XP Pro CD, but after it loads the XP tools, I get a BSOD saying can't continue, check for viruses & rund Scandisk.
2. Went to My Computer/disk management, left click on drive I want formatted, but "format" is grayed out.
3. Ran Kaspersky internet security 2009 and eliminated any malware detected plus ran scandisk with no consequences.
4. Tried 1 & 2 again with the same results.

could be a damaged disk. The disk is not damaged, as it is brand new. I called the manuf. of the hdd and they said it is a windows problem. I am getting a stop error screen with the following information:

I have a computer that I just put a new hard drive into with fresh install of Win XP home. It's an Intel board and the start up always pauses after the messages that it's detected a keyboard and mouse and
usb. Then it pauses and just says press F1 to continue. Pressing F1 makes it continue to start up normally.
I have reset the Bios values to defaults and tried to change several of them, with not effect at all. If I unplug the keyboard it sometimes skips the F1 pause. The intel website has not proved helpful. They don't have any discussion groups either.

I have Windows XP Home installed on my computer as my OS. Recently, I've been cleaning out my computer by uninstalling programs that I haven't used for a while. However, the uninstallation of some programs fails. For example, I have a software called JapaneseNow! (to learn Japanese) installed on my computer. However, trying to uninstall it pops up the error message that "Uninst.isu" cannot be found and therefore the uninstallation cannot continue. I already cleared off a software called SpanishNow! beforehand, which may have caused Uninst.isu to be cleared....

I am running XP Pro on a laptop loaded with programs and files. When I recently started it up, instead of loading with the familiar Compaq logo, it started in a DOS program (Phoenix BIOS) with a warning
that "it had not been shut down correctly last time." I think I did shut it down correctly last time. The BIOS offered me two options. 1) Hit F1 to Boot or 2) Hit F10 to continue. I hit F10. That took me to a screen where I had to guess what to choose. Did I want to Save and Exit? Did I want to Escape and abandon changes? etc. I didn't know what to do but it seems I had not made any changes so I said "abandon changes and boot

When I boot up my computer, I get several messages from Windows which read this way: "[insert file with a .exe extension here] - Corrupt File The file or directory C:WINDOWSsystem32UACmqiemusiwu.dll is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the Chkdsk utility." This message comes up every time that I try to run an executable file and seems to prevent some of them from running altogether. I can run Chkdsk in Safe Mode, but after it completes file verification it says "Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read only mode." I have a virus (Total Security 2009) that is preventing the computer from displaying the command prompt in regular mode, but the programs that I need to get ride of the virus are all executable and cant be installed because of this glitch. Any help with what this file UACmqiemusiwu.dll is or how to fix it would be great. I've tried deleting it, but the computer won't let me because it is corrupt and unreadable.

friend whose computer has crashed the screen had frozen. He could do nothing except reboot it using the power button but on rebooting, there was a 'no signal' message on a black screen. We have checked the monitor connections (the monitor works when connected to his second computer) and even replaced the video card but of course this made no difference (no signal) We've taken out the HD and installed it on his second system. Does this mean that the most likely cause now is the motherboard/bios or is there something wrong in our approach/deductions
