Back in my MS-DOS days I could get the directory of a folder and direct it to a text file. Now I'd like to do that again, but I can't figure out to make it work in Windows Explorer (for XP, but I also have Vista on my notebook).Do I have to run a DOS window. Is the syntax the same? (Can I remember it?) Are there any shareware or freeware program managers that provide this function?
Awhile back I was organizing my picture files and accidentally pressed a few keys, which seems to have caused my file and folder names to disappear in that one folder. I can see them fine in list, icon, tile, or detail view, but in filmstrip or thumbnail view they have disappeared! I use WindowsXP. How can I unhide the file names?
I've got a folder on my PC containing pictures. When I open it in Windows Explorer and use the Thumbnails view, the file names under the thumbnails are gone. In other folders they are visibile (even subfolders of the not working folder). When I choose any other view the filenames reappear just fine..In the 'Choose Details' window of the folder the 'Name' option is selected (it's not even possible to deselect it).
I have WinXP Home - SP2. When i do a search in "Search Companion" and a list is shown in 'search results' is there then a way to save that list to a text file that can subsequently be printed out?
Only the first few characters of the newsgroup names appear in the Outlook Express "Newsgroup Subscriptions" list. How can I make enough of the group name appear so that I can tell what groups Outlook is trying to show me?

I was doing some detailed drawings in photoshop, and I also had a generic photo up in photoshop as well. I went to save my drawings, but apparently accidentally saved the photo under the drawins name and then closed the program. This morning I discovered the bad news. Is there a way to get that drawing back? I do not know if it was ever saved before.
I restarted my computer after ripping some cd's and when it came back on I began ripping another before I opened a window and clicked on a folder only to notice it was working as shift-click. The rip finished and I restarted again and this problem was gone but a new one had replaced it - Windows Explorer no longer displays folder names. Please help if you can because reinstalling windows is a big hassle.
When I am saving a file I often use a single letter for example X If i wish to continue using the X's for example XX or XXX etc etc I used to get a drop down box telling me when I had used that name. This has vanished. I now have to manually count the letters how can I get this drop down box back please.
Like I said in the title. In one of my folders, (and only that particular one), all file and folder names are missing. I don't know if it's a design feature or a bug, but I really want those names back. Can it be caused by malware?
I noticed today that the icons in some of my folders (not the desktop icons) look strange. The text where the file name is--some of them have blue text and others have the usual black text. What the heck is this, and what do I need to do to fix it?
When I try to rename a file I get a popup. It says (if you change a filename extension, the file may become unusable). How can I rename it without it becoming unusable?
all my music file names have changed from black to blue in some albums , some are all blue , some are all black and some are a random mixture of the two.Can anyone tell me whats happened and how to fix this
I have had this problem for a couple of years now, even in a few different computers. I have a folder with files I am keeping, copying it from computer to computer when I change computers. In this folder I am unable to see folder/file names unless I mark them. This has irritated me to some extent since there are around 12-13000 files in this folder by now. I have asked around at computer-tech stores, and some of my more or less nerdy friends. One of wich is mostly always able to help me but not with this.
I noticed recently that my system and other folder names have changed on their own! What the -h- happened? I have never seen anything like this before. These folders appear on all of my drives c:, d:, g: and they are random. It looks like they are of another language, maybe? Actually, the wording makes no sense at all...> It looks like most of these folders previously existed.
Things I have done: Ran Anti-V program + Ewido Suite = No viruses, trojans, malware, etc. Ran three adware programs (ad-aware, spywareblaster, spyware doctor) = Clear. Checked all running processes and startup tab in mscofig = no peculiar programs detected. Ran regseeker = Phenominal amount of invalid keys, etc. (3,000+) very unusual to the norm!!!
New at this , but completed 2 movies just fine. My last move simpily will not save. What am I doing wrong. All kinds of space left on my computer, and I am doing the same procedure I did with the first 2. This capture I did edit, but I'm sure I did it right.
I am running XP Pro SP3. From Windows Explorer, if I were to click on File > New, I am met with a list that includes Folder and Shortcut, followed by a large number of entities corresponding to files types. E.g., Microsoft Office 2007 Database, Briefcase, Microsoft Office Word Document, etc. These file type entries I never use.Where is this list maintained, and how can I remove most if not all of the file type entries contained therein?
When viewing files as thumbnails in Explorer I can manually rearrange them by simply dragging and dropping. Now they are not in any particular logical order (that is, not by Name or Date Created, etc.), *but* they are in the order I want them. And even when I close and reopen Explorer, as long as I stay in Thumbnails "mode" the files remain in the order I manually placed them. Now here's the challenge: I have been unable to find a way to export a list of these files *in the order I put them*. There are lots of utilities (even the good old DOS DIR command) that make it possible to list files in various sort orders, but none that I have found that will list the files in the order I put their thumbnails.
I just added a "Directory List Print" to my right click options and somehow the default choice (highlighted at the top of the list) changed from "open" to "search".
Apparently the default selection governs what happens when you left click. I want to restore "open" as the default choice, but can't figure out how. Does it require a reg edit or a utility program or what? TIA
OS is Win 2K. I have a folder containing about 150 files Using Explorer, I can open the folder and view a list of the files. Is there any way to save that list as a text document?
Until recently just the usual Windows files in the Background file list in Display Properties/Desktop. Recently the list grows day by day it seems with a variety of files from My Pictures folder. Now takes quite a while to open the desktop option. Possibly linked to Picasa some way. How can I get rid of them without deleting the photo file ?
I now have W XP. When I click on folders I get icons or thumbnails. I want to establish "LIST" as the default way to view files. When I click on List, it works the one time but then future clicks brings me back to the thumbnails.
I recently had to do a system restore and now my .jpg and jpeg files have a bad file icon. They still do open with the windows pic program as I want them to - but only on the admin accout, I usually surf and play and do everything else with a user account, and even if I reset everything under folder options for the file associacions it somehow doesn't apply to the other account.
windows tells me in the file association menu that I changed the file association's properties and can set them back to standart "photo suite 6" - a program that I uninstalled ages ago
Outlook Express folder list and Contacts list are not showing. I've walked her through the process of clicking on View at the top of the Outlook Express Interface and setting the Layout items so that her Contacts and Folder list should be on the screen, but they are not. I've tried everything I can think of to rectify the situation and I've run out of options. The way it is without her folders list she cannot access her deleted folder and her sent folder and cannot delete anything from those folders. Is there anything else I can do to bring up those her contacts list and her folders list?
