My computer at work has been behaving very oddly lately, i keep getting "... has generated errors and will be closed by Windows" For programs - Mainly firefox (2.0.0.7), but also happens with Outlook, IE (6) and Safari for Windows.Using Windows 2000, checked for viruses with Sophos - nothing. Using msconfig.exe, I set computer to boot to safe mode so I could run defrag in safe mode. I have done these things in the past, with no problems. Login screen appeared. I typed my password, but nothing appeared. Computer unresponsive to keyboard / mouse input. I pulled the power cord after waiting 5 minutes.

The two error messages I receive are: "MotiveSB.exe is generating errors and will be shut down.", and "ycommon.exe is generating errors and will be shut down. You will have to restart your computer." I have run a few virus programs without detecting any viruses. I don't know if these errors are caused by the history cleaner, or what, but they now occur every time I start up.

Still without opening the file that I was trying to open. I have had several viruses, trojans especially, I may still have some. Basically I tried to unistall the two gig monster that is Americas Army to make some room on my hard drive but an error message pops up saying 'an error occured whilst trying to uninstal Americas Army this item may have already been uninstalled do you want to remove this item from the add remove program list? I clicked no and tried a few other progs I wouldnt mind uninstalling all the same error message.Americas Army is most definatley still on my pc but has no uninstall option - the uninstall options on other progs worked fine however.Im on winxp pro spk2 dell inspiron 9300 laptop nothings come up on my normal anti virus / spyware scans and I havnt installed anything for ages on this really stable machine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWindows Installation : Various files cannot be copied and/or not copied correctly. Giving blue screen of [enter] retry, [esc] skip or F3 to abort installation. Files constantly failing to copy : cyycoins or something, lots of .chm files, too many to mention. Curious thing is, same problems for both optical drives and both HDDs, varying both for many installations. Eventually I held down [enter] and the files went in, well some didn't but Windows booted fine.
Warhammer Dawn of War : Winter Assault. wh40k.cab is corrupt. Changed optical drives during installtion, installed fine. Could be hardware issue with my cdrom, Same game, when playing will crash to desktop. No error message sometimes, no indication of crash (no freezing or warning sounds or stuttering, just flat out BOOM, .exe gone. I thought this could again be CDROM issue, with the copy protection not keeping the game running because disc wasnt read right.
Mozilla Firefox : Dunno really. Loaded it up to access webpage. Some survey appeared, then program locks up for maybe 10 seconds then crashes with firefox.exe has encountered error Windows built in message appears. Firefox is unable to load up again due to missing/corrupted .dll file error. Cannot page_read or something. I forget the whole error message. Guess coulda been important to save it to post here.
Whole system reboot. Idle one time, machine just goes down, then starts up again. Flat reboot. Didnt touch any buttons, then once in Windows 'recovered from serious error' message appears. Tells me after sending report its a device driver issue. Changed My Computer options to give the Blue Screen of Death so that the driver is named, nothing, just page_file_read or errors along those lines I know nothing about.
Don't know what is wrong. Hardware issue could be Optical Drive. But then again I have 2 drives, and the errors ocur no matter which one I use, same with the Hard Disks. I'm stumped. Its quite a huge issue. I have nothing on the drives, I backed all my stuff up before formatting after starting to get errors 1-4. I got these errors before format and immediately after. So would indicate Hardware issue would it not Can it be a BIOS problem? Or wiring, neither of which i have altered or been brave enough to look at.
Ever since I'd built my computer, I have been getting errors in internet explorer. These would pop up at completely random intervals (although it seemed to be more often when I loaded intensive pages). They would take the guise of problems that are all attributed to many things. mshtml.dll, ntdll.dll, wininet.dll, and a few other .dll files have been the error causing agents in the "more info" on the error popup. I have also had many blue screen errors such as bad pool caller, irql not less or equal, and page fault in_nonpaged area, to name a few
When I started getting these errors, I tried to look them up, but I found several different reasons for errors. Many errors had different problems such as various installed components, leading my to believe that it was a RAM error. I bought a PNY stick at BB and swapped it. Still got the errors. I then returned the PNY stick and bought an ULTRA X-Connect PSU. I tested it again, and I still got the same errors. Then, a new devvelopment occurred. I tried doing a repair install, but it errored halfway through, saying that a certain file could not be copied
I am reposting "strange error message" to reflect the exact message the computer is giving me. My daughter has 2k and said strange messages have been popping up and she can't do anything. I deciced to take a look at it. It will boot up, then it gives the above message in a box. When you try to click on it, it just freezes, and creates the same message on the bottom, so it looks like tons of windows are open. I went to the forum search and put in this message, and found a link on how to boot in safe mode and follow 3 steps, and that didn't work. I also want to add that although it has an internet adapter, right now it will not boot to internet, so I can't run anything on it unless it's possible to do any type of seach off a cd or floppy (any type of virus scans, etc.).

There are system boxes coming up with registry and dll errors and the whole system seems SLOW.
The family computer is playing up and to the best of my knowledge the computer in question just simply suddenly stopped working as it should. I am unable to get the 'default' welcome screen upon start up and am getting the logon box where you type in a username and passworld. I know how to get rid of this, user accounts>enable welcome screen - but it will not solve the problem.This is just the start of the problems. I have been using Add/Remove icon in Control Panel to remove programs. Although the Win2k Pro is running fine ,the icon of Add/Remove Program is not opening the next window to remove the programs.
I downloaded a program from Ebay and after installing it I noticed it didn't have a uninstall. I used my add & remove program to uninstall the program but not all of it got uninstalled. I deleted the folder and then did a search in my registry for anything with refernce to the programs name "Ebay's Blackthorne" and deleted all entries with that name.Every time I reboot windows tries to install something for Blackthorne and I have to keep cancelling it out.

Then I tried right clicking on a folder/file, selecting "Properties", pushing the "Advanced" button,I then checked "Compress contents to save disk space",and the folder and its contents turned blue but the size of the files,seeming, hadn't changed. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen SP3 first came out, I jumped at the opportunity to update my perfectly running smooth computer with SP3 for windows. As soon as I did install SP3, nothing seemed to work correctly anymore and I had to end up reformatting my computer. It destroyed my perfectly good up to date computer. Yes I have a genuine copy of Windows XP if that's what you were about to say. So my question is, did anyone else every have a problem with SP3, are their known issues, and should I risk installing it again? I have always believed in if its not broke, then dont fix it. Well, sometimes my high hopes and curiosity of updating will improve performance from what it already is, gets me in trouble sometimes. Let me know guys. I will hold off for a bit.

My computer will restart (no hanging even, just turn off and back on) while I'm looking at flash media on the net, using photo/art programs, or viewing a word document with pictures in it. Mostly media related things. It also crashes for running defrag or disk cleanup.
When it restarts it's a blue screen stop error. I don't recall what it said exactly, but it's not difficult to get it back. If I keep restarting, I'll keep getting that error. If I wait a minute or so and then restart, it'll come on correctly.
Win 2000 is on D and Win 98 is on C. When 2000 crashes it does something to C because then 98 won't start untill 2000 comes on and repairs the C drive. But now 98 won't come on at all. If I turn on 98 I get an error, so then I'll try 2000 but it won't start for a while after 98 crashes. I don't see why crashes on D affect C and vice versa.
That probably wasn't enough to tell what's wrong.what I should do?
