Aug 19, 2005I have just been given a PC with windows XP in Spanish.Will it be possible to buy a copy of English windows and overwrite it?

Sep 10, 2005I have a problem with accented characters. When I write myself, If I use Times New Roman all accented characters will be changed to some strange symbol. Even if I change the character with the dictionary program, it will automatically change back to the strange symbols. This problem I have overcome, by using ARIAL. The real problem is, that the e-mail I receive in aforeign language, it has the same strange characters. I have also installed on Oxford English-Spanish dictionary. Even the writing on this dictionary gets changed from the original characters. This is an example (Desesperaciçn) the o gets changed into a ç. Or an è gets also changed into ç. If I log into a non English WWW site, even on those pages it will change the accented characters to some strange simbols.

Dec 14, 2005I purchased this computer from a guy who recently passed away. I also recently found out that he installed a pirated version of Windows XP Pro on this machine. I do not have the installation CD. My question is: Can I go to a retail store, purchase a valid Windows XP Home or Pro edition, insert the new valid CD, and it will overwrite the pirated version? Or is something more involved necessary? Also, if I can do that, will all my files be lost?

Aug 3, 2010I have a problem with a Windows XP installation. The problem arose when I attached a SATA SSD with Windows 7 on it, intending to check whether the SSD had failed. The computer booted up into XP but I couldn't see the SSD in My Computer. When I restarted the computer, I received GRUB (the Linux bootloader) error 22. It is possible that Linux was active on the Windows XP HDD at some point, but it is long gone and I didn't expect to find GRUB controlling the boot. I switched off and removed the SSD drive so that the computer would, so I thought, be in the state in which it was when I approached it. I switched it on and got to GRUB error 21. I inserted my Windows XP CD-ROM and restarted, selecting the repair option. I ran CHKDSK, FIXBOOT and FIXMBR and restarted but now I get error INVALID SYSTEM DISK. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER.

Aug 1, 2005I installed Spanish in a program, and it says I should be able to type CTRL+SHIFT+a to get the a with an accent, and various other shourtcuts. None of these work. In fact, the only way I can get a Spanish character to appear is by using the ascii codes (ALT+0241 for the Spanish ñ, etc) I can find some characters if I hit the ALT+SHIFT combo -- just not all the characters, and then I can't use certain keys (like the = sign becomes an upside-down question mark ¿ why the special keyboard mappings would not work?
