Only Has Guest Account With Restricted Permissions?
Oct 21, 2005
Got an XP machine that's using the guest account with restricted permissions. I can't log in in safemode as it restarts all the time before the loggon screen. I can't set it to not automatically restart because the guest account doesn't have permission. Putting the HDD in another machine we can see the Admin and another account, but they don't show up on the logon screen in normal mode. I know there is a way to logon the administrator account from the normal mode logon screen as i've done it before.
This may be a coincidence but I installed a new anti-virus program on my laptop and and rebooted. When it restarted, I was presented with a user login screen and the only available account was "Guest". I have never previously had more than one user account and it always booted straight into XP using my default administrators account called "Peter".
I don't know how to recover the situation as when I login as Guest now I have no admin rights. I can see the "Peter" folder still exists under Documents & Settings and I really don't want to re-install XP Home if at all possible.
when i trying to access shared folder on the other PC on my LAN, the logon page only allow me to logon with guess account, the user field is disable and you cannot access with other user name, what you can do is key in the password.
I just tryed to log into the guest account for the first time so this what happens.Im at the log in screen i click the guest icon it begins to log in then it says saving your settings and im back at the logon screen. Never even see the desktop.
Got on my computer and figured out I had made myself admin (i was on limited). i did it via the safe mode/"hidden" account method. they figured this out, password protected it and changed me back to limited. i know this sounds goofy, but it really is ridiculous. my mom says she's gonna change me back to admin but she's too damn lazy to do it. The more i bug her about it, the more she gets pissed off.
I get on my laptop this morning and every single file and folder is read only and it tells me that I don't have the permissions to change it.There are only two user accounts on my computer.I'm the administrator and the guest account is disabled.
I was just trying to get rid of the welcome screen that appears everyone windows xp start, so I disabled ALL the accounts (including administrator & guest account) in Administrative “My Computer> Local Users and Groups” I showed 3 accounts: One in my name, another "Administrator" and third one "Guest". I disabled all of them When I rebooted the pc, the windows xp welcome screen appeared but it did not show any accounts (i.e. I did not have any account to click to). I also tried pressing CLT + ALT + DEL twice to get the window where Username and Account password are to be typed but it doesn't work. It says that "Your account has been disabled. Please Contact System Administrator" (Even the administrator account give that message). I tried typing everything...
I'm having an odd problem with an XP Pro machine. This machine 3 admin accounts and one limited guest account on it and has been that way for several years.Other than Windows and Firefox updates no new software has been loaded on the machine since the end of last year. She couldn't narrow the time frame very well but sometime one to three weeks ago my wife's account did something strange and her desktop disappeared. She can still log in, still has admin rights, but her desktop has returned to its default settings.I looked around and discovered in the 'Documents and Settings' folder her old home folder is still there and there is another folder with the same folder name plus an extention of dot computer name. When she logs in she is logging into the new UserName.ComputerName folder.
After reading Joseph Doyle's submission regarding this I would like to point out that you can set a Guest account password by simply doing this. This method is somewhat simpler in that you do not have to mess around with CMD.exe.1. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.3. Select the "Users" folder under "Local Users and Groups".4. Right click on the "Guest" account and click "Set Password". When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click "Proceed". You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.I have always considered security a top priority and considering the ease of doing this I would highly recommend that everyone sets a Guest account password. Even though the Guest account is disabled by default, why not do this just for the extra bit of security? Local Users and Groups is not available in XP Home. A way to set a password for the guest account in Home and Pro: click start - run - type: cmd - in the command window type: net user guest * - hit Enter - you will be prompted for the password to use.
I can only access my computer using the guest account. This is husband's computer and he has admin rights. When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I am limited in downloading/running virus scans because of the non-admin status.
I couldn't log-in by administrator. It displays "account restricted".And when i am installing a software, it displays "Couldn't access All UserDocuments, please connect administrator", but the account which I am using having administrator power. How could I do for this problem?
I'm considering purchasing a laptop but I want to know if it's possible to disable almost everything on the laptop (including internet access and such, almost EVERYTHING) from a start time to a finish time certain days of the week. For example, I want to only be able to access Microsoft Office utilities from 9-5 on Monday Wednesday and Friday. But on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday I don't want any restricted access. It would be great if there was a password that could access these features during the time periods too. I'd prefer to do this on XP but if say it's only available on Vista or something that's ok too. I just want some input on the subject.
i have XP pro I have one limited account and my account is Administrator. Now when I use Ineternet Explorer and select internet options on the tools menu, it says that it is restricted and the see an administrator. I am not sure how to set this back to default settings.
I want to make Windows XP Pro SP2 accessible only at specific hours, for example only between 10:00h - 12:00h every day, and the rest of the day the workstation to be inaccesible (unable to login, or unable to boot, or whatever, no matter). I checked out Local Security Policy, but as far as I've understand, the related settings there are about networking only. Anyone here knows such a restrictive software, or the specific settings in Windows' own security policy, if any, or a registry tweak, or whatever?
i have a problem with windows whenever i try to search a folder. i type in what i'm looking for but when i hit enter the page shows the standard "page cannot be found". at the top it says that interent explorer has restricted content that could access my computer. this is obviously a load of crap because all i'm trying to do is use the search function. it's not just when i try to search that it happens, it also happens when i try to get to "my network places" using the locations found at the side of the screen when i'm in my computer.
I just looked at internet options - security - restricted sites and found a bunch in there. I had none about a month ago and never had any before. Some sound bad but that's irrelevant, my question is how did they get there? Is this some connection to MS's new security downloads?
eMachines PC, less than one year old, running XP Home (ugh)While in the "Owner" administrator account, I attempted to change the user rights for my daughter from "Restricted" to "Standard user". I used the "control userpasswords2" screen rather than the standard User Accounts control panel provided with XP Home.I immediately received an error message, stating something like "this account type cannot be found" or "this account type is not supported".No big deal that, but what occurred after that stymies me. My daughter's account is no longer visible in either of the account management control panels, and is also no longer visible in the Welcome Screen. All of her folders still exist.I attempted to re-add the account, but the system (perhaps wisely) prevents me from doing that, stating that the account still exists. Using the XP Home User Accounts control panel, I turned off the Welcome Screen; user login now uses the oldskool screen within which you have to enter the user account name in one field and the password in the other. My daughter is able to login that way.
When I turn on the computer it goes to the Windows XP screen, there it prompts you to log in as Administrator or Guest. I can log in as a guest, but I can't change nothing or do anything else there. I want to log in as the administrator. How can I get the Administrator's password, or change it to a new one?
We have 3 computers all running Xp, just did a buncha windows updates. Now when I turn on my pc I get the Amin login screen, I do not need to type in a password, I just hit enter or login and it's fine.I never uses to have this screen start up, now I do though. There's only the 'admin' profile to choose, no others, I even tried disabling my 'guest' profile but this made no difference. It's not the end of the world, but just like to avoid this extra step.
I am the administrator on this pc I have a user called GUEST I do not want the guest to be able to access a specific program I know they cannot get to my documents but if i log on as 'guest' i can open the accounting program and i dont want anyone as GUEST to be able to do that how can i do this? ive read some things about user groups but i dont have an option to add/change groups in the control panel under user accounts.
I am trying to install HP Image Zone Plus but I keep getting a yellow bar with the writing "To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer. Click for options..." When I click there is the statement "Allow blocked content" - when I click on this, nothing happens - the message just reappears. How can I correct this problem so I can load my program? I don't know where to start.
Father wants (mysite.com) blocked for anyone that uses computer. They use IE and AOL. I can use parent controls for AOL but not sure how to use Restricted Sites on IE When I start to type (my site) several URL will show up. Do I use all URL or do I just type (www.mysite.com). This is a 12yr. old girl and she forgot all her password (LOL) so when I try it using Fathers side on IE it says restricted in bottom right corner but it will go to log in screen for the site. She is restricted from computer till she turns 18 if I don't get it resolved.
I'm trying to set a mandatory wallpaper for a user account with many group policy restrictions. Although I have enabled both "active desktop wallpaper" and "enable active desktop" the wallpaper doesn't appear. I have successfully set the wallpaper for another user with fewer restrictions. The restricted account does have file rights to the wallpaper file. One of the group policy settings must be causing a conflict but which one?
On both my desktop and my laptop running WindowsXP SP2 I use a simple, homemade start page with links to sites I visit almost daily. Frequently, when I open this page, I will get this message on my desktop but not my laptop:"To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer."Clicking for options, I get:"Are you sure you want to let this file run active content?"This is ridiculous, as there is no such "active content" on the page. Obviously, it has something to do with IE security settings.
I've seen similar recent threads opened detailing similar problems you've looked into. My control panel icon has vanished from my start menu, the link to it in My Computer has gone too and when I try to access it via the Run function using control.exe I am greeted with the message of "This operation has been canceled due to restrictions in effect on this computer, please contact your administrator".I'm sure this is a malware problem I've picked up off the web but I've got no idea of how to fix the problem. Your help would be very gratefully received.
One of my user account for window xp proffesional is missing.Orginally i had one user account and then i decided to make another one. When I was making the second one I had to choose adminstrative powers because it said that I didn't had any other accounts with adminstrative powers. Then after i restarted my original account was missing and I was like wtf! My files are all gone now.The original account name was Administrator. I still have the files for it in my C:Documents and Settings Administrator So how do I get it back?
Windows XP Home SP2 in a Gateway Performer 1300 P4 I recently purchased a used computer locally from a private party. It seemed to work fine. Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.
I've gotten myself in somewhat of a pickle. I have a system that I had built for my husband. I later built a new box for him and decided to sell the previous one. A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".
I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.
I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me.....
