Disable All Accounts - Administrator / Guest Account

Jul 14, 2010

I was just trying to get rid of the welcome screen that appears everyone windows xp start, so I disabled ALL the accounts (including administrator & guest account) in Administrative “My Computer> Local Users and Groups” I showed 3 accounts: One in my name, another "Administrator" and third one "Guest". I disabled all of them When I rebooted the pc, the windows xp welcome screen appeared but it did not show any accounts (i.e. I did not have any account to click to). I also tried pressing CLT + ALT + DEL twice to get the window where Username and Account password are to be typed but it doesn't work. It says that "Your account has been disabled. Please Contact System Administrator" (Even the administrator account give that message). I tried typing everything...

Can Only Access Guest Account - Have No Administrator Rights

Feb 2, 2009

I can only access my computer using the guest account. This is husband's computer and he has admin rights. When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I am limited in downloading/running virus scans because of the non-admin status.

Only Able To Logon On As Guest Account

Jul 18, 2005

This may be a coincidence but I installed a new anti-virus program on my laptop and and rebooted. When it restarted, I was presented with a user login screen and the only available account was "Guest". I have never previously had more than one user account and it always booted straight into XP using my default administrators account called "Peter".

I don't know how to recover the situation as when I login as Guest now I have no admin rights. I can see the "Peter" folder still exists under Documents & Settings and I really don't want to re-install XP Home if at all possible.

Only Has Guest Account With Restricted Permissions?

Oct 21, 2005

Got an XP machine that's using the guest account with restricted permissions. I can't log in in safemode as it restarts all the time before the loggon screen. I can't set it to not automatically restart because the guest account doesn't have permission. Putting the HDD in another machine we can see the Admin and another account, but they don't show up on the logon screen in normal mode. I know there is a way to logon the administrator account from the normal mode logon screen as i've done it before.

Changing Account From Guest To Admin

Jan 3, 2008

Got on my computer and figured out I had made myself admin (i was on limited). i did it via the safe mode/"hidden" account method. they figured this out, password protected it and changed me back to limited. i know this sounds goofy, but it really is ridiculous. my mom says she's gonna change me back to admin but she's too damn lazy to do it. The more i bug her about it, the more she gets pissed off.

Limited Guest Account - New Home Directory

Jun 20, 2009

I'm having an odd problem with an XP Pro machine. This machine 3 admin accounts and one limited guest account on it and has been that way for several years.Other than Windows and Firefox updates no new software has been loaded on the machine since the end of last year. She couldn't narrow the time frame very well but sometime one to three weeks ago my wife's account did something strange and her desktop disappeared. She can still log in, still has admin rights, but her desktop has returned to its default settings.I looked around and discovered in the 'Documents and Settings' folder her old home folder is still there and there is another folder with the same folder name plus an extention of dot computer name. When she logs in she is logging into the new UserName.ComputerName folder.

Password Guest Account - Disable By Default

Aug 12, 2002

After reading Joseph Doyle's submission regarding this I would like to point out that you can set a Guest account password by simply doing this. This method is somewhat simpler in that you do not have to mess around with CMD.exe.1. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.3. Select the "Users" folder under "Local Users and Groups".4. Right click on the "Guest" account and click "Set Password". When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click "Proceed". You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.I have always considered security a top priority and considering the ease of doing this I would highly recommend that everyone sets a Guest account password. Even though the Guest account is disabled by default, why not do this just for the extra bit of security? Local Users and Groups is not available in XP Home. A way to set a password for the guest account in Home and Pro: click start - run - type: cmd - in the command window type: net user guest * - hit Enter - you will be prompted for the password to use.

Main Account Gone And Administrator Account Useless

Sep 2, 2005

My main user account has disappeared from the welcome screen. I know all about pressing Ctr+Alt+Del twice and typing in your account and if that doesn't work, to use the "Administrator" account to enable your main account. The problem is that my administrator account doesnt even seem to have any administrator privelages... its just as useless as the guest account, or so it seems.I don't know what to think. If i go to computer management and check out the users i see: Administrator, Guest, and some other SUPPORT_388... but not my main account. IF i go to documents and settings, i see all the accounts, including administrator and guest and my main account. So what's happening?

Administrator Has Disabled Usb Ports

Jul 7, 2010

I was working this morning and I tried to put a flash drive in my usb port (one that I've used forever) and I got the following messages:"Administrator has restricted this computer to access usb/1394 mass storage devices"and "G:/ is not accessable Acess is denied" This is especially troubling for me since I've got to finish working on my syllabi and lessons for school and can't use my flash drive, plus I can't use my ipod, which is really irritating. I thought I was the administrator. I certainly haven't disabled anything at least not on purpose.

BUT...i was led to believe that the password was blank so it would log in automatically but it is password protected, but i never set a password for it so im confused as to how to enable my other user accounts. Is there a way to do it in safe mode from the cmd prompt or do i have to just reinstall another windows OS to get it back up and running.

Task Manger Disabled Administrator

May 1, 2005

new computer last month and we have not experienced any problems with it until yesterday. I had to use the ctrl+alt+del function for some reason, but when I entered those keys, a message came up that said "Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator." Ctrl+alt+del has worked previously, as recent as the day before. But for some reason it will not open up. No one in my family messed with the computer controls, at least not purposely. I called the Tech Support for HP, the maker of our computer, and they could not figure out the problem. Their only suggestion was to do a full system restore. I imagine there has got to be a way to fix this.System: Microsoft XP Home Edition. Service Pack 2 Make: Hewlett-Packard Pavilion

Use A Limited Account, Or An Administrator Account

Mar 23, 2006

It's apparently a lot safer to use a limited user account, and that's what I'm trying now, but it's also a pain-in-the-a$$.I also don't understand why the XP installer forces you to create another admin account, when you could simply login as 'Administrator'.You're supposed to login to the admin account to install everything, but when you do, in most cases, the shortcuts seem to only be created for the account you're logged into at the time. Very messy. The list goes on, and these things have probably been discussed before, but why is there a single 'Program Files' directory, which all users have access to? Surely there should be a separate directory for each user, so user A cannot access programs installed by user B, unless of course it was meant to be shared?

Passworded Administrator Account And A Non-passworded Limited Access Account

Aug 17, 2007

Guest account feature is off. Two other accounts are normally available on the machine, Mine (named "RedCola") which is a passworded administrator account and a non-passworded limited access account.Tonight when trying to log on I accidentally typed the wrong password. When I entered the correct password on the second time it gave me a message that my account was locked and would have to contact my administrator. I rebooted just in case and the account was not available to select, but the generic Administrator account was now there. When I went into that account to check User Accounts though the Control Panel my account (named RedCola) was not even listed. I rebooted again. At the log-in screen I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and typed in my account name and password. Again, same message about the account being locked.

New Administrator Account?

Dec 22, 2007

I recently went into safe mode for something but I accidentally clicked on the Administrator account instead of my usual one (my username). I didn't do anything while logged in that account and quickly rebooted. Today, I noticed that there is a new entry in C:/Documents and Settings named Administrator, created the same day I went into safe mode. It has things such as Owner's Documents, Desktop, Start Menu, Application Data, Local Settings, etc. (much of the same things All Users and my user name folder has).My question is, is there any way to get rid of this - I'm assuming it's a new account - safely without harming anything in my computer? Is this something I should even be worrying over? The entire folder size is only around 16mb, but like I said, I can be obsessive about things like that.

Administrator Account Changed

Nov 6, 2007

I have a problem with my windows. The other day, the computer started to demand I chose a specific user-account for the computer. When there was only 1 I could choose (my own), I thought i was stupid and wanted to change it. While screwing around with my user-account, I accidently changed my account from "administrator" to "limited user" and I cant figure out to change it back. I have to log on to an administrator account to do so, but cant log on anyone. I found out, there IS a user-account named "administrator" which funny enough is an administrator, but I cant log on on that account.
