I just tryed to log into the guest account for the first time so this what happens.Im at the log in screen i click the guest icon it begins to log in then it says saving your settings and im back at the logon screen. Never even see the desktop.
This may be a coincidence but I installed a new anti-virus program on my laptop and and rebooted. When it restarted, I was presented with a user login screen and the only available account was "Guest". I have never previously had more than one user account and it always booted straight into XP using my default administrators account called "Peter".
I don't know how to recover the situation as when I login as Guest now I have no admin rights. I can see the "Peter" folder still exists under Documents & Settings and I really don't want to re-install XP Home if at all possible.
when i trying to access shared folder on the other PC on my LAN, the logon page only allow me to logon with guess account, the user field is disable and you cannot access with other user name, what you can do is key in the password.
Got an XP machine that's using the guest account with restricted permissions. I can't log in in safemode as it restarts all the time before the loggon screen. I can't set it to not automatically restart because the guest account doesn't have permission. Putting the HDD in another machine we can see the Admin and another account, but they don't show up on the logon screen in normal mode. I know there is a way to logon the administrator account from the normal mode logon screen as i've done it before.
Got on my computer and figured out I had made myself admin (i was on limited). i did it via the safe mode/"hidden" account method. they figured this out, password protected it and changed me back to limited. i know this sounds goofy, but it really is ridiculous. my mom says she's gonna change me back to admin but she's too damn lazy to do it. The more i bug her about it, the more she gets pissed off.
I get on my laptop this morning and every single file and folder is read only and it tells me that I don't have the permissions to change it.There are only two user accounts on my computer.I'm the administrator and the guest account is disabled.
I was just trying to get rid of the welcome screen that appears everyone windows xp start, so I disabled ALL the accounts (including administrator & guest account) in Administrative “My Computer> Local Users and Groups” I showed 3 accounts: One in my name, another "Administrator" and third one "Guest". I disabled all of them When I rebooted the pc, the windows xp welcome screen appeared but it did not show any accounts (i.e. I did not have any account to click to). I also tried pressing CLT + ALT + DEL twice to get the window where Username and Account password are to be typed but it doesn't work. It says that "Your account has been disabled. Please Contact System Administrator" (Even the administrator account give that message). I tried typing everything...
I'm having an odd problem with an XP Pro machine. This machine 3 admin accounts and one limited guest account on it and has been that way for several years.Other than Windows and Firefox updates no new software has been loaded on the machine since the end of last year. She couldn't narrow the time frame very well but sometime one to three weeks ago my wife's account did something strange and her desktop disappeared. She can still log in, still has admin rights, but her desktop has returned to its default settings.I looked around and discovered in the 'Documents and Settings' folder her old home folder is still there and there is another folder with the same folder name plus an extention of dot computer name. When she logs in she is logging into the new UserName.ComputerName folder.
After reading Joseph Doyle's submission regarding this I would like to point out that you can set a Guest account password by simply doing this. This method is somewhat simpler in that you do not have to mess around with CMD.exe.1. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.3. Select the "Users" folder under "Local Users and Groups".4. Right click on the "Guest" account and click "Set Password". When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click "Proceed". You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.I have always considered security a top priority and considering the ease of doing this I would highly recommend that everyone sets a Guest account password. Even though the Guest account is disabled by default, why not do this just for the extra bit of security? Local Users and Groups is not available in XP Home. A way to set a password for the guest account in Home and Pro: click start - run - type: cmd - in the command window type: net user guest * - hit Enter - you will be prompted for the password to use.
I can only access my computer using the guest account. This is husband's computer and he has admin rights. When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I am limited in downloading/running virus scans because of the non-admin status.
where if i log off an account and try to log in again, there is a 1 min "Loading account settings" (i've checked it and its loading WgaLogon.dll...) and then there is an endless? (i've only been patient enough to leave it for 15 minutes) screen showing the desktop image.I can open the Task Administer and see there are some processes working (scvhost.exe mainly). I notice this not in the cpu-usage column, but on the memory-usage column, where these processes change the used memory (not in great numbers, though) Fast user switching works fine if i dont sign off of any account (I currently have only two).
I encountered a weird problem while booting up my computer after being away for a month. When logging into any XP account (including administrator and additional new accounts with administrator access), I encounter a mystery dialog box which contains nothing other than "yes" and "no" buttons. This box pops up after the system accepts my password. I can tell all bootup processes are still happening in the background but if I press either yes or no buttons, the account logs off and I am back to the login screen. I would really appreciate it if anyone can tell me how to figure out what is launching the mystery dialog box or how to read the log file to find the problem point.
I don't want my computer to automatically log in to a user's account on startup, and it does so even if there is more than one administrator account, and the 'Welcome screen' is disabled.
I have installed XP last time i have changed some startup registry entries.when i start it. It comes to the welcome screen and show my desktop wallpaper and suddenly loggin off ...i tried both users of my computer but same issu.... last good config. login also not works. but now i cant even loggin in safe mode. i tried some forums but no tricks worked...i boot from xp cd and changed ntuser.dat to wsaupdater.dat ....but till i cant login...I think if i can able to change that registry startup value somehow then it is possible...but i dont know how can i change those value.
my Pc is starting up then when i enter my password, it logs on then logs off it's because an option then i have put without thinking in ad-aware anniversary edition, the option that tells what processes are allowed to run on the computer, is there a way to enter my PC ? i have tried running in safe mode, it's still no good
I've recently installed Sony Sound Forge 8 which, as part of the installation, creates an ASP.NET user.Since this user was created, I have to click on my User Account to log in (it's the only one thatg shows on the welcome screen, the ASP one is hidden) How do I get it back to logging me in automatically - there's no password on the account.
When I turn on the computer it goes to the Windows XP screen, there it prompts you to log in as Administrator or Guest. I can log in as a guest, but I can't change nothing or do anything else there. I want to log in as the administrator. How can I get the Administrator's password, or change it to a new one?
We have 3 computers all running Xp, just did a buncha windows updates. Now when I turn on my pc I get the Amin login screen, I do not need to type in a password, I just hit enter or login and it's fine.I never uses to have this screen start up, now I do though. There's only the 'admin' profile to choose, no others, I even tried disabling my 'guest' profile but this made no difference. It's not the end of the world, but just like to avoid this extra step.
I am the administrator on this pc I have a user called GUEST I do not want the guest to be able to access a specific program I know they cannot get to my documents but if i log on as 'guest' i can open the accounting program and i dont want anyone as GUEST to be able to do that how can i do this? ive read some things about user groups but i dont have an option to add/change groups in the control panel under user accounts.
One of my user account for window xp proffesional is missing.Orginally i had one user account and then i decided to make another one. When I was making the second one I had to choose adminstrative powers because it said that I didn't had any other accounts with adminstrative powers. Then after i restarted my original account was missing and I was like wtf! My files are all gone now.The original account name was Administrator. I still have the files for it in my C:Documents and Settings Administrator So how do I get it back?
Windows XP Home SP2 in a Gateway Performer 1300 P4 I recently purchased a used computer locally from a private party. It seemed to work fine. Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.
I've gotten myself in somewhat of a pickle. I have a system that I had built for my husband. I later built a new box for him and decided to sell the previous one. A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".
I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.
I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me.....
I created a new account in windows xp and I can not understand why there is still the name of the last user on a login screen of windows xp proffesinal. In accounts there is only my new account and quest account
when i rebooted and logged into the system from the menu screen, a pop-up came on telling me that it could not find my account and that it will temporarily be replaced by one. It gave me a blank account as if I had nothing on it... ever. is there some way to recover my account or at least scavange some files(like my all-important hundreds of bookmarks full bookmarks file) from it? no system restore is not turned on, sadly.
My main user account has disappeared from the welcome screen. I know all about pressing Ctr+Alt+Del twice and typing in your account and if that doesn't work, to use the "Administrator" account to enable your main account. The problem is that my administrator account doesnt even seem to have any administrator privelages... its just as useless as the guest account, or so it seems.I don't know what to think. If i go to computer management and check out the users i see: Administrator, Guest, and some other SUPPORT_388... but not my main account. IF i go to documents and settings, i see all the accounts, including administrator and guest and my main account. So what's happening?
My owner account (where most of my files are) has been magically changed to "account unknown" under the System Properties/Advanced/User Profiles. I "see" the "Account Unknown" listed, but I am unable to access it. I tried signing in as the administrator, but no luck. I checked Windows help online, but no luck. I called Sony Vaio support, (support?), no luck. I am running XP Home Edition SP2 will all updates. I have found out that the files aren't gone, according to online readings, but getting to them is another matter. I'm a minister and all of my sermons funerals baptisms etc. are connected with the "Owner" profile.
When I try to log into my user account in WinXP (I'm an administrator), it logs me into a newly created account (I didn't create it, the computer did).
For example, my user account name is JandJ, and my computer's name is LOVEMACHINE.
When I attempt to log into JandJ (as usual), I get logged into JandJ.LOVEMACHINE instead....
I have 3 user accounts on my computer, 2 of which are admins and the 3rd is my 7 year old daughter. Instead of moving start menu programs around, can I just put it all into the all users folder and somehow check which folders/files in there her account can access?
Also, when running anti-spyware/anti-virus programs from my account, will it catch nasties in the other 2 accounts as well or do I have to run the programs from each user account?
