when i trying to access shared folder on the other PC on my LAN, the logon page only allow me to logon with guess account, the user field is disable and you cannot access with other user name, what you can do is key in the password.
View 2 RepliesThis may be a coincidence but I installed a new anti-virus program on my laptop and and rebooted. When it restarted, I was presented with a user login screen and the only available account was "Guest". I have never previously had more than one user account and it always booted straight into XP using my default administrators account called "Peter".
I don't know how to recover the situation as when I login as Guest now I have no admin rights. I can see the "Peter" folder still exists under Documents & Settings and I really don't want to re-install XP Home if at all possible.
I have a question. how do i create a new account while using the guest accountn.

View 14 Replies View RelatedGot an XP machine that's using the guest account with restricted permissions. I can't log in in safemode as it restarts all the time before the loggon screen. I can't set it to not automatically restart because the guest account doesn't have permission. Putting the HDD in another machine we can see the Admin and another account, but they don't show up on the logon screen in normal mode. I know there is a way to logon the administrator account from the normal mode logon screen as i've done it before.
View 1 Replies View RelatedGot on my computer and figured out I had made myself admin (i was on limited). i did it via the safe mode/"hidden" account method. they figured this out, password protected it and changed me back to limited. i know this sounds goofy, but it really is ridiculous. my mom says she's gonna change me back to admin but she's too damn lazy to do it. The more i bug her about it, the more she gets pissed off.

I disabled all of them When I rebooted the pc, the windows xp welcome screen appeared but it did not show any accounts (i.e. I did not have any account to click to). View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having an odd problem with an XP Pro machine.This machine 3 admin accounts and one limited guest account on it and has been that way for several years.Other than Windows and Firefox updates no new software has been loaded on the machine since the end of last year.She couldn't narrow the time frame very well but sometime one to three weeks ago my wife's account did something strange and her desktop disappeared. She can still log in, still has admin rights, but her desktop has returned to its default settings.I looked around and discovered in the 'Documents and Settings' folder her old home folder is still there and there is another folder with the same folder name plus an extention of dot computer name. When she logs in she is logging into the new UserName.ComputerName folder.

This method is somewhat simpler in that you do not have to mess around with CMD.exe.1. Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator.2. Go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.3. Select the "Users" folder under "Local Users and Groups".4. Right click on the "Guest" account and click "Set Password". When a dialog comes up warning you of the possible consequences click "Proceed". You will then be given a dialog that lets you set a new password.I have always considered security a top priority and considering the ease of doing this I would highly recommend that everyone sets a Guest account password. Even though the Guest account is disabled by default, why not do this just for the extra bit of security? Local Users and Groups is not available in XP Home. A way to set a password for the guest account in Home and Pro: click start - run - type: cmd - in the command window type: net user guest * - hit Enter - you will be prompted for the password to use.

When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I would like to activate so it sees the new email account and reflects accurate number of unread messages. I run XP Home Ed SP2 on my home pc. Myself and my wife have user accounts.
When i login to my account it takes for ever for the desktop to appear and all the automatic programs etc to start up (i use sophos antivirus & EZ Firewall). I cant even get taskmanager to appear until everything has loaded. I have to go for a smoke while waiting for it to finish.
My wifes login however is instantaneous - everything appears quickly and ready to go in no time.
I dont understand this - i assumed the same programs were running cos they are installed on the psame pc.
Is there a program i can run to show me what is loading from the log on screen so i can compare between the two user accounts?
or can anyone suggest something to quicken mine up?
I used to auto-logon to an account (the computer would automatically log on to the accoun t, entering the password and everything), but now I have deleted the account, I want it to auto-logon to my account, now. Every time a switch on my PC, that annoyintg bleep sound in windows goes off and a message appears saying it could not login to that account, well, obviously it cant because it has been deleted, how can I make it auto-login to my account?

I was on it that morning and it worked perfect and i shut it down properly before school only to find that when i got home it wont let me logon to a windows user account. After booting the windows user account pops-up and after selecting my account the computer will shut down. A friend of mine said that there might be something wrong with the winlogon but i cant find any info about that online. Right now im using safe mode with networking and i also tried accecsing the boot menu and selecting "disable automatic restart after system failure". Now rather than restarting it gives me a blue screen that reads:

Using Windows XP Pro SP2. As I'm the only user on a standalone PC, I didn't use to bother with a password and Windows would log me in
automatically.
Then I found I had to have a password in order to get Task Scheduler to work, so I set one, then used UserPasswords2 to again set my account to log in automatically.
This works fine except that I cannot now find a way to access the built-in Administrator account.
Before I used UserPasswords2, I could get to the Admin account by starting in Safe Mode (the trick of pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice I've
seen here never worked for me, apparently because Windows thinks I am part of a workgroup rather than a domain). This worked whether I had a password set on my own account or not.
Now, however, I get automatically logged in even in Safe Mode, with no chance to choose the Admin account.
IS there any way of doing this so that I can keep auto login, keep Task Scheduler happy and still get to the Admin account if I need to?
This error keeps popping up It will say whatever file im trying to access at the top ie: C:Documents and SettingsWindows XPMy DocumentsMy Music is not accessible.

My computer starts up normally.It always just autologs on since I'm the only one using my windows xp computer. However, before anything can be displayed it immediatley logs off to the logon screen. I click my username and start the login process (i have no password and before even switching to my wallpaper or anything it says stuff like logging out and saving your settings.
I tried booting in safe mode too and the same infinite logon loop occured to, even with the default administrator account. The last thing I remember doing before this happened is I was playing City of Heroes when it crashed forcing me to restart my computer. This happens occasionally in certain programs but I've never had anything like this happen before. I tried unplugging my keyboard, mouse, usb devices, ethernet cable, no luck. Intel Pentium 4 1.7 ghz Geforce 5600 FX 256 mb windows xp home service pack 1, in case any of that matters
I've seen another post somewhere and someone else had this problem, but I haven't found a solution. We're using WXP Pro, SP2. After doing a repair install (the other person just had it after using Windows Update), at logon, after entering the correct, AND VALID, password either for a user Or the Administrator, Windows Logon displays the following Logon Message in a box: "!The system cannot log you on due to the following error: "The program issued a command but the command length is incorrect. "Please try again or consult your administrator."
No matter how many times logon is attempted, or with what account, the message continues to be issued. Thus, NO ONE can logon to the GUI. The Recovery Console can be used to logon as Administrator, but no password is requested even though there is one in place. I've searched the MSKB but didn't find any reference. Implementing "Last known good configuration" does not fix the problem.
When i boot up the system hangs at the blue 'Windows xp' screen, the 'Windows is starting' is missing and it goes no further, the logon screen does not appear so i can't get in. I have recovery console on and i can get into the drive by booting in from another drive/operating system

View 3 Replies View RelatedWe have 3 computers all running Xp, just did a buncha windows updates.Now when I turn on my pc I get the Amin login screen, I do not need to type in a password, I just hit enter or login and it's fine.I never uses to have this screen start up, now I do though. There's only the 'admin' profile to choose, no others, I even tried disabling my 'guest' profile but this made no difference.It's not the end of the world, but just like to avoid this extra step.

Once I got it home, however, I discovered that when I tried to install the drivers for my wireless adapter, the InstallShield Wizard would come up and extract the files from the CD and then go away and nothing would happen. When I went to the Windows update site, it would not down load the activeX control to check my computer for needed updates. It did the same thing. It would show that it downloaded the file and then nothing would happen. I talked to a local computer shop and they said they have had a lot of trouble with "broken" Windows Installers lately. So I went to the Microsoft site and downloaded the updated Windows Installer (as they suggested) and this did not change anything.

A friend wanted to buy it so I purchased a copy of Windows XP so they'd have their own license, but instead of rebuilding the box, I wiped all the pertinent programs and info they didn't have licenses for and changed the license number to theirs. The problem is, I want to change the user account name under c:documents and settings to reflect the new name.I have created a new ADMIN account, logged in as this account and renamed the account "mitch" to "don". All this does is creates a new user "don" and moves the "my documents" (I have downloaded numerous pdf files that I've created instructing him on how to update antivirus, antispyware and general info on computer use, security, etc. and placed it in the My Documents folder) from "mitch" to don".

It gave me a blank account as if I had nothing on it... ever. is there some way to recover my account or at least scavange some files(like my all-important hundreds of bookmarks full bookmarks file) from it? no system restore is not turned on, sadly.
