I just formated a toshiba laptop, and finished installing windows. It worked fine. But when it came time to activate the operating system, it did not recognize the cd key that was printed on the bottom of the lap top. I tried to call the activation phone number, and it didnt recognize the long number generated by the computer which will allow the phone activation
View 6 RepliesI'm trying to install Windows XP on my new Serial ATA hard drive, it has been formatted everything seems ok, When I start installing windows XP pro on this machine it seems like it just can't detect the damn hard drive, when I set it as boot on te serial ata drive eeverything works fine, it goes as C:/ but I just can't switch to my cd drive with windows XP to install it.When I boot up my other hrd drive with windows xp, I can actually see my hard drive in windows explorer.

I found this forum and it solved the BSOD problem by autodetecting the hard drive. Yay, I finally got the Windows Setup screen. However my keyboard isn't recognized so I can't begin the install. It's a USB and I've tried it in other ports. When I pop out the cd, and start the pc normally, the keyboard works. Windows Vista won't start...I'm guessing because I have to change the drive configuration back to where it was. I really want this Vista gone

I want to create a duel boot XP/Ubuntu system. Now, the problem is my laptop box is long gone, I stumbled across the driver disk but there was no OEM version of XP. So now the two fold question. 1) How do I find out what my XP serial is? 2) How can I find out if it will work with my service pack 2 OEM disk? If the answer to number 2 is 'its not compatible'. How can I reinstall XP without getting a new disk?

I know the key I have is valid (Generated through MSDN site), so I have tried to use a newer version of the disc. When rebooting the machine, it tells me to insert the previous disc....so my question is this. Is there any way I can start the installation from the very beginning, using the newer disc, so that I can use the key?

View 20 Replies View RelatedIve been asked to move a hard drive from 1 pc to another. The hard drive only has a restore disk for the operating system, and all the files need to stay intact. The hard drive on the other pc crashed & has been binned, this pc had a restore partition, so no op sys disk. Both pcs have licence stickers on them for Win 2k. I dont want to swap the stickers from 1 case to another, so, is it possible to change the operating system serial number to the one which is on the case without having to reinstall windows?

I've come across an old system that needs to have windows XP reinstalled, and I'm not sure what disk I'm going to require.The System is an old Dell Dimension 4550, and had an install of Win XP pro SP1 installed on it, and has the sticker stuck to the side of it (with the serial).My question is, before I wipe this thing, I want to make sure I have, or can get a Version of XP that will accept that particular serial when I do the reinstall. I'd hate to bring it down and then find that I can't get it to reinstall with its original XP Key.I have access to pressed/original versions of oem/retail Windows XP SP2 for sure.

Everything was going great until I got to the place in the install where I have to enter the serial number for Windows 2000. I tried my home copy and it would not work. The problem I have is my father inlaw lost his C.O.A of his tower somewhere between his house, his car and my house, (about 60 miles).I can't boot from his hard drive, however I can 'browse/access' it. I've tried a couple of 'retrieve windows key' programs, which work...on my P.C! I have my key tho! I tried installing one into his hard drive but kept finding my key. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Sabrent SBT-EKU25 external enclosure with a 2.5 inch hard disk in it. This is a USB 2.0 drive and whenever I connect it to USB 2.0 port, it is not recognized (or "recognized" as an unknown device" ) on all my machines. It however is recognized as a drive and works fine on one laptop which has only USB 1.1 ports.I have tried separately powered USB hubs as well without success. So I don't think it's a power issue.I have even tried deleting all USB devices in Device Manager and let the machine rediscover them.

I was able to get XP installed using my CD with a only a couple of little hiccups that I got past. Now, I'm trying to change the serial number to his via the sticker on the bottom per the instructions at MS Q328874. I don't know if the problem is that my CD is an upgrade CD instead of a full install or if it's that the solution only applies to volume licensing. Does anyone know if I need to activate the current serial number before changing it to the correct number? Or will it not work at all since mine is the upgrade version?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI install Server 2003 Standard SP1 downloaded and installed on a PII 400, 256Mb RAM with IIS, ASP.Net 2.0, SQL server 2000 SP4, Mysql 5, and PHP5, and all without a single hitch...too good to be true. I went ahead and tried on what will be my server PIII600, 512 MB RAM, First try, Server 2003 couldn't find a file when installing, retried and it worked. Downloaded SP1 and when I was extracting it said "file is corrupt", downloaded 4 more times with same result. reformatted and reinstalled 5 more times and cannot get past "file is corrupt" on SP1 and sometimes extracting the .Net 2.0 installer got the same error. I swap all hardware with PC from first try (except RAM, Mobo, CPU, CDROM) with no change. Win98 and XP installed fine on the second PC just can't get server 2003

Now I can't boot up (cold or warm) without using the original disk. Can I just go into setup and change boot settings without re-installing.Is there anything else I should know before I attempt to fix this problem? I have burned many files,photos,and music on this unit using cd-r discs. I am now using DVD-r discs and the burner will not recognize the disc. I tried DVD+r discs and have the same problem. Attached is the statement I get when I try to burn a disc. Should I go back to a CD-R disc or what could the problem be? I have tried to burn using Windows and using Nero with the same result.

I have left it to load for a few minutes but still nothing happens.After searching, I have found 2 possible solutions:The first was to uninstall the driver and restart. Upon restart windows will reinstall the device.I tried that twice, still experiencing the same problem.

At some point it stopped working, and I've ended up using Picassa to get the images d'ld, but it won't let me add photos to an existing folder. I want the Windows wizard to work again, that was better.My new camera is not recognized at all, and if anything pops up, it's Explorer. I tried to install drivers from the disc that came with the camera, but keep getting a message that says I don't need to. I've tried to manually add the camera with the "add hardware" function, but it won't work.
