I am running Windows XP Homedition. I have two drives inside, the regular C: drive and I have a Slave drive F: with all my photos and music and documents. The problem I'm having is that everytime I restart or reboot my system it say it needs to check F: drive for consistency. It haven't been doing that until now. Then once it goes through that the system comes up. I try to click on an icon like my internet or registry program, nothing comes up, its like a read only file or something. Its not executing the program. THEN all of a sudden I get a blue screen. It says this::"Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacture for driver updates. try changing video adapters. "Check with your hardware vendor for aany BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use SAFE mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance SStartup options, and then select Safe Mode."
View 1 Replies View RelatedCould anyone explain to me the difference between doing an error check at boot up and doing a scannow check.
when i run chdisk for errors in win 2000 by right clicking the hard drive icon and then clicking properties of c: harddrive, then tools tab, then click the check now button, and in the check disk options ticking "automatically fix file system errors" and clicking ok I get this message "The disk check could not be performed because exclusive access to the drive could not be obtained. Do you want to schedule the disk check to occur the next time you restart the computer."If i chose yes to that above it performs the diskcheck at reboot and when windows loads i go back to the checkdisk and i get the same problem again.

View 3 Replies View RelatedService pack 2 OEM disk. Now, I have a Dell laptop. I am upgrading it to its maximum capacity. I am also looking to format everything. I want to create a duel boot XP/Ubuntu system. Now, the problem is my laptop box is long gone, I stumbled across the driver disk but there was no OEM version of XP. So now the two fold question. 1) How do I find out what my XP serial is? 2) How can I find out if it will work with my service pack 2 OEM disk? If the answer to number 2 is 'its not compatible'. How can I reinstall XP without getting a new disk?

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhile trying to sort out a fairly unimportant problem I have almost wrecked my operating system.
The system:- Windows XP professional with all updates until Friday (now Sunday)
Computer:- Dont know the make, I think it might be Elite with 1.7 dual core processor, 2 Gb ram 300 Gb HD and Nvdia Graphics card, also installed, a TV card, wireles card and A DVD/CD drive.
The problem:- I was trying to bypass the Windows log on screen and sought help in this forum. The advice I was given seemed reasonable so I did it
What happened:- After making the changes the computer booted up properly but when Windows started I got a lot of splash screens and pop-ups as if it were a new installation and to my horror I could not access any of my data.
What I did:- I tried to use system restore but found that all the points I tried could not be restored.I tried shutting down Zonealarm (another post refers to this) which did not help,so I tried to uninstall Zone alarm but could not as apparently a dll has gone missing. So I deleted everything I could find related to Zone alarm and tried system restore again.Disaster.
The log on screen had reappeared and I thought I had solved the problem. Clicked on OK and the screen with only the mouse pointer appeared and stayed there for about 15 minutes, then the desk top picture appeared, nothing else. About 30 minutes later the icons and <Start> appeared. Everything seemed to work and I had found my files again But I am unable to access the Internet or outlook express, the IE diagnostic seems to think it is a question of Firewall. This could be as the Zonealarm Icon is still in the tooltray even though I thought I had deleted the whole of the program.
I would be grateful for help in two areas. First and most important How can I regain access to the net. Second repairing the ridiculously long start up.
Im trying to reinstall XP onto a laptop (Professional, Service Pack 2) and when I get to the Serial Key screen, the key is invalid. I know the key I have is valid (Generated through MSDN site), so I have tried to use a newer version of the disc. When rebooting the machine, it tells me to insert the previous disc....so my question is this. Is there any way I can start the installation from the very beginning, using the newer disc, so that I can use the key?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have what probably amounts to a stupid question, but I honestly can't recall. I've come across an old system that needs to have windows XP reinstalled, and I'm not sure what disk I'm going to require. The System is an old Dell Dimension 4550, and had an install of Win XP pro SP1 installed on it, and has the sticker stuck to the side of it (with the serial). My question is, before I wipe this thing, I want to make sure I have, or can get a Version of XP that will accept that particular serial when I do the reinstall. I'd hate to bring it down and then find that I can't get it to reinstall with its original XP Key.I have access to pressed/original versions of oem/retail Windows XP SP2 for sure.
I may have a version of SP1 somewhere, but I'm not even sure what type it was, I think it worked with Volume License keys (I'm assuming the actual CDs are different for VL OEM and Retail). My question is, are newer versions such as XP Pro SP2, going to be aware of older serial keys?Would XP SP3 work (I hear it doesn't ask for the key at the beginning but at the end), and if so is there a place where the ISO for XP SP3 is legitimately available?I have a valid XP SP1 key, I just want to make sure I can get it back up after I wipe it.
I cannot boot up and bypass the logon screen. I have adjusted the settings from Control Userpasswords2 by unchecking the "users must use a username and password to use this computer" but still am required to click on my name on the logon screen. I've also adjusted the same setting in TweakUI for XP with no help Another issue, which has happened on two different computers is when I attempt to use the Panda Scan my anti-virus warns that it contains a virus and will not let me proceed with the scan.I am using XP Home version, a single user on a non-network computer and I consider myself to be an intermediate user.

There was a ton of work stuff on this computer, so I decided to format the hard drive and start fresh. Everything was going great until I got to the place in the install where I have to enter the serial number for Windows 2000. I tried my home copy and it would not work. I tried a few other valid key codes and they still do not work.
