Unable To Change Serial Number Of Operating System?

I was able to get XP installed using my CD with a only a couple of little hiccups that I got past. Now, I'm trying to change the serial number to his via the sticker on the bottom per the instructions at MS Q328874. I don't know if the problem is that my CD is an upgrade CD instead of a full install or if it's that the solution only applies to volume licensing. Does anyone know if I need to activate the current serial number before changing it to the correct number? Or will it not work at all since mine is the upgrade version?

Ive been asked to move a hard drive from 1 pc to another. The hard drive only has a restore disk for the operating system, and all the files need to stay intact. The hard drive on the other pc crashed & has been binned, this pc had a restore partition, so no op sys disk. Both pcs have licence stickers on them for Win 2k. I dont want to swap the stickers from 1 case to another, so, is it possible to change the operating system serial number to the one which is on the case without having to reinstall windows?

Is there anyway I can specify a serial number when deploying a package via GPO? Its getting a bit tedious deploying the software then having to input the serial number 60 times.

My work recently got new computers, so there were kind enough to let us take our old Dells home since they were like three years old. There was a ton of work stuff on this computer, so I decided to format the hard drive and start fresh. Everything was going great until I got to the place in the install where I have to enter the serial number for Windows 2000. I tried my home copy and it would not work. I tried a few other valid key codes and they still do not work.

We have a new user at our work place. To make a long story short, he accidentally threw away our serial number for Microsoft server 2003.I am trying not to alert my manager yet, so therefore, I do not want to contact microsoft for a solution, because they would need to speak to him.So i am trying to save his rear-end, how could i retrieve the serial number for our MS SERVER 2003?Can i find this info on our actual server? some where in the registry?

I was wondering of a way to change the serial key for windows XP MCE 2005, through regedit. I have tried using Programs to change it for me, but it always tells me I don't have access to registry. I am an admin on my user, so I should be able to access it. Is there anyway to change the serial through the registry?

ok well this question interested me I have a japanese computer and it came with a key number that is running ubuntu(I really hate japanese windows) but i want to install xp english on it can i use the japanese serial key to install an english version? is anything in the microsoft world as easy and straight forward as that?

Some time ago I booted up my computer,to find that my XP switched to Windows classic style,I didn't take it seriously so I went to properties to change when I get an error message saying there is a problem with run32.dll,not only that,but the visual styles can't load I assume,becuase of run32.dll,so now I'm stuck with the piece of s*** style.

I have a friend who has a pentium 2 350 which is currently running on Windows 98SE...yikes!My friend has been complaining that their computer has been running slow and that pop ups are appearing everywhere. I told them that it sounds like their computer has been hijacked and that I would recommend that they format their computer and start from fresh.I want to format their computer and install a newer windows OS (perhaps windows xp) and install a couple of spyware/antivirus programs.

i stuck the cd in and followed the prompt to do a clean install. after the whole process i noticed that it was installed on the d: partition of my harddrive and not on the c: the original win2000 is still installed on the c: drive. how do i remove the original from the c: drive and move the d: to the c: because the c: drive has a larger partition.

The correct way to key in the serial for Wins 2000 pro "Store Oem Final" I have tried testing on another pc with os Xp to open up the Wins 2000 cd but when key in the serial no., it just keep saying incorrect number. Is there any special steps needed to key in correctly,I have even tried other serial no. found somewhere else and still cannot access.I have used explore to check the disc and there are a lot of datas inside just cannot open the cd with the serial no.

I have a Dell Vostro 200 that came with Vista. I am trying to install XP on it. It starts going through the setup routine and then tells me it can't locate the hard drive. I know when XP came out sometimes you had to install the SATA during the install, but I haven't had to do that in ages. Is there a setting in the bios or something.

I was about to reformat my C: (that has an nonworking windows partition) from my current partition D:. I went to my Computer D Management and it said that my C: was a primary partition [green] while my current one was a logic partition blue.boxed in green. Someone at Yahoo! Answers said not reformat the C: because it would screw up my D; Drive. Is it safe? What should I do? I just wish to use my C drive for data storage and my D drive as a Windows partition.

I want to put in a larger drive than the old one, have Windows completely move itself to the new drive, and leave the old one blank. All without Windows security hackles raising and saying, hey you changed something so you need to re-activate. I can't AT ALL see a security issue with this and I'm utterly surprised this isn't obviously available.

I sometimes turn off all my antivirus stuff when I play online games (stupid I know but I need to free up the memory). Anyways today I forgot to turn zonealarm and avg back on, and I got a virus while surfing the net. I cleaned most of it up, but when I right click on the desktop, and go to desktop, the backgrounds box is locked or something, and I can't chang the background.

Recently reinstalled Windows XP SP2 Home, due to a messed up Registry and upon reinstalling my screen resolution became 640 x 480 px, and whenever I try to change it, my computer won't let me. According to Microsoft.com, I have to install the driver for my monitor. I can easilly re-download the driver from the Dell website, but for some reason my computer won't let me go to Monitor settings. In order to install the monitor's driver I need to access this. Below is an image of the Advanced Display settings window when I open it. Note how the Monitor Properties is unclickable.

I'm in the market for a new desktop but don't like that I'm forced to have Vista as my OS in it. Seeing as how the selsction of (new) machines with XP is basically nonexistent, can I change the OS to XP with minimal trouble? After reading and hearing all the horror stories, I'd prefer to wait until Vista has all the bugs worked out before going that route.

I shut off the computer and turning it back on couldn't boot up windows. It gave the windows wasn't shut down properly and I tried the normal restart option and it would just give a black screen with a blinking _ and then nothing happens. Tried loading in safe mode but it gets to mup.sys then "Press Esc to cancel SPTD.sys" flashes below and whether I press Esc or let it be, nothing happens after that.
I tried popping in the windows xp disc that came with the laptop, boot from disc, it starts up but then after loading everything, it then says "Windows is starting up" the disc stops spinning then nothing happens. I tried popping in a windows vista disc and it says "Windows is loading files" with a progress bar, when it fills up, I get stuck with a blank black screen the disc stops spinning and then nothing happens.

In the past few months I've added a 512 stick of RAM and replaced the hard drive in my five year old laptop with a brand new Seagate Momentus. The laptop itself is a Pentium M 1.8 running Windows XP Home (Service Pack 3). Also in the past few months I've started receiving BSOD's for Machine Check Exception errors. The numbers tend to vary, though I can never catch one long enough to write them down, as the system flashes the error screen and then shuts off or reboots.
I've run MemTest as recently as this afternoon and the results came back with no errors found in the memory. I ran a SMART test from SpeedFan on the new HD and it was deemed perfectly fit. Still, I can't shake the feeling there's something going on with the new hardware in this laptop, as I had never even heard of a Machine Check Exception since I never got one until some time after installing the parts.
I notice I get this specific error when playing a computer game (Diablo 2, for Christ's sake, so the game isn't particularly taxing!) or watching video, ie intensive activities. It never happens while just browsing the net. I am not overclocking the processor. In fact, I'm undervolting it to keep heat down, though I've turned off Notebook Hardware Control to go back to normal voltage setting and I still get the Machine Check Exception errors with the same frequency.

I have a "Shadow Star Icon" from a Microsoft website informing me that Microsoft is unable to validate my operating system. It launches everytime I start the computer and several times throughout the day. At startup the computer will not get to the home screen without making a selection of whether to correct now or later. It offers me the opportunity to "purchase validation." Everything on my computer is legitemate. I've looked in the System Configuration Utility (msconfig.exe) startup and services and don't recognize it. I have a HP Pavilion a647c, w/Windows XP. This is the site that it directs me too:If you scroll to the 3rd section of the webpage you will see the "star" that I refrenced earlier. Bottom line is I don't know if this is for real.

I have been handed a PC to "sort out". It`s OS is XP Home.The problem being, that when it is switched on, it brings up the following screen We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. Start in safe mode.Safe mode with networking.Safe mode with command prompt.Last known good configuration setting (most recent setting that worked). Start Windows normally.But whichever option you select, the computer simply reboots and brings up the above screen again.

My son has a 3 year old Compaq computer which is running Windows XP home. He had been asking me for a while to reinstall the operating system to get his sister's stuff off of it since she now has a laptop. The computer came with its own recovery system built in, so I did that first. The computer would run the recovery, and then would go to the black background "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" screen with a little 'please wait' under the windows logo flag, and when it would go to the next screen (which would presumably be the beginnings of the start-up area) it would get a black screen with a cursor in the upper left side. (You can't type anything with the cursor, however). So I got in an online chat with HP who said that it sounded like the recover partition had been corrupted and that if I had not made a set of recovery CDs then I needed to order them and run the recovery from the Cds. So I did just that yesterday. The same thing happens. I get to the first start-up screen (black background with Microsoft 'flag' and a 'please wait') and when it goes to the next screen it's a black background with a cursor in the upper left. What is wrong with this computer.
