Change Number Or Rings For Outgoing Fax?
Jul 26, 2005
I'm dumbfounded trying to find how to change the number of times Fax will ring before canceling to try again. I have a fax machine I'm trying to send to that picks up on 15 rings, but Fax will only allow 10 rings before it tries again.

Ive been asked to move a hard drive from 1 pc to another. The hard drive only has a restore disk for the operating system, and all the files need to stay intact. The hard drive on the other pc crashed & has been binned, this pc had a restore partition, so no op sys disk. Both pcs have licence stickers on them for Win 2k. I dont want to swap the stickers from 1 case to another, so, is it possible to change the operating system serial number to the one which is on the case without having to reinstall windows?

I was able to get XP installed using my CD with a only a couple of little hiccups that I got past. Now, I'm trying to change the serial number to his via the sticker on the bottom per the instructions at MS Q328874. I don't know if the problem is that my CD is an upgrade CD instead of a full install or if it's that the solution only applies to volume licensing. Does anyone know if I need to activate the current serial number before changing it to the correct number? Or will it not work at all since mine is the upgrade version?

In the past few months I've added a 512 stick of RAM and replaced the hard drive in my five year old laptop with a brand new Seagate Momentus. The laptop itself is a Pentium M 1.8 running Windows XP Home (Service Pack 3). Also in the past few months I've started receiving BSOD's for Machine Check Exception errors. The numbers tend to vary, though I can never catch one long enough to write them down, as the system flashes the error screen and then shuts off or reboots.
I've run MemTest as recently as this afternoon and the results came back with no errors found in the memory. I ran a SMART test from SpeedFan on the new HD and it was deemed perfectly fit. Still, I can't shake the feeling there's something going on with the new hardware in this laptop, as I had never even heard of a Machine Check Exception since I never got one until some time after installing the parts.
I notice I get this specific error when playing a computer game (Diablo 2, for Christ's sake, so the game isn't particularly taxing!) or watching video, ie intensive activities. It never happens while just browsing the net. I am not overclocking the processor. In fact, I'm undervolting it to keep heat down, though I've turned off Notebook Hardware Control to go back to normal voltage setting and I still get the Machine Check Exception errors with the same frequency.

I have Win XP SP2 SMTP server running with Outlook Express and it is working well, except that I have looked at the log file and I suspect that other things are sending emails from my machine. I have up-to-date Zone Alarm firewall and XP firewall turned off.I have 3 email accounts that I use to send emails from my OE all xxx@mydomain.com .Is there any way to configure it and limit it to only allow emails sent from xxx@mydomain.com ? It is possible that these addresses (mta106.mail.cnb.yahoo.com etc) are emails I have sent to valid yahoo email address I suppose, (I dont know the address of the yahoo SMTP server at the other end) but I would feel happier if I could configure it to only allow emails being sent from mydomain.com.My ISP allocates different IP addresses to me every time I login so I cannot restrict it by IP address.

My e-mail programme is a fully registered version of Incredimail. I recently installed the MacAfee 8.0.0 anti virus programme. Immediately thereafter I was unable to send any e-mails, although recieving any, presents no problem. Disabling MacAfee enables me to send as normal but leaves the computer unprotected whilst doing so. I have no problems sending mail via Yahoo, Netscape, Outlook Express, Opera or any other webmail I would imagine.Does this indicate that MacAfee is finding the Incredimail outgoing e-mail to be suspect and therefore blocking it? If this be the case I would be most grateful if anyone could proffer any comment and even more grateful should a solution be forthcoming

My son-in-law's PC went totally south so he put together a Barebones and installed XP Pro but he misplaced the Key # so he is unable to activate with MS. He installed a new primary HDD and borrowed a Key # temporarily. The PC does not boot the drive from the former PC which he installed as a slave drive. Belarc and Everest will not read that drive so no help there. He can open and look in the slave drive(F) and tried copying the wpa.dbl file to the new drive but it did not work, even in safe mode. Any ideas how he can recover the Key # from the old drive so he can use it on the new drive?

I set up a new Dell Optiplex 620 lunchbox with XP SP2 Pro recently that has an issue I don't know how to resolve. I'd like the computer to start with the Number Lock engaged so I went into the BIOS and made sure that it was set to always be on. But when Windows takes over the startup procedure it shuts the Num Lock off. Why is Windows doing this and how to I fix it? Registry edit?

I know it's possible, but forgot the method. How do you command Windows to discover the folder where the certificate of authenticity number resides, that was originally used when installing the OS. I need to reload the OS from a recovery disk, but lost the original COA number.

i got a new machine. I've been looking around and pretty much the only processors being sold are 64bit ones. So i guess i'll be getting a 64bit processor. I've been have been reading around about windows xp x64 and i've picked up that a large amount of software will not run under windows x64. We have some windows xp 32bit disks but should we go for x64?

When I try to use Widows Update, I get the following error message: [Error number: 0x8DDD0002] To install updates from this website, you must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group on your computer. If you use Windows XP, you can see if you are an administrator by going to User Accounts in Control Panel. Note: If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings might also prevent you using this website. Contact your system administrator for help with updates. I am using a Dell Dimension 2400 Computer with Windows XP SP2. I have two accounts: Computer Administrator and Guest (account is off).

I will like to know from the Cnet uses that use windows xp sp2 to tell me how many viruses that they has on their pc. My record number is 105 viruses when doing a full system scan with the full paid version and updated version of Norton anti-virus 2004! I was surprised that i had that many viruses when i had been running norton for 3 or 4 months running full system scans once a week and a quick scan once everyday. I later then uninstalled norton becuase my computer was going too slow and installed avast antivirus. The first scan that i ran with avast as soon as i installed it found another 24 viruses. That is a total of 129 viruses.

I was just wondering what is an average number of processes running after restart before you start anything else up. I usually have around 44 running and this seems excessive. I would love to know what a minimum number of processes is to run Windows XP. If you have an idea, please let me know.

I recently downloaded PC Tool's Spyware Doctor and ever since then my memory usage went from 400 to 600 while in idle.So to cut down on memory I carefully disabled some more Processors and Start-Up programs I then went about and checked the "Adjust computer for best performance" and adjusted the Processor Scheduling to "Adjust for best performance of Background Services" It was only after those two changes that I relized when I opened Task Manager and clicked the processors tab there were only 8 processors there: firefox.exe, explorer.exe, taskmgr.exe ctfmon.exe, winlogon.exe, csrss.exe, sprtcmd.exe, pctsTray.exe.

This little tweak allows you to customize the grouping action on your taskbar. According to the default, if you have more than (ex.) 3 internet explorer windows open, XP will group them into a single button with a menu that lifts off the taskbar. You can change the number of windows that are open before XP groups them.goto[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced]look for the dword "TaskbarGroupSize"If it isn't already there, right click on the right pain, and create a new dword value. Double click the value, and enter the number of windows you want xp to allow open before it groups them. I personally like 2, because I like any related window to be grouped automatically, but, you can set this high if you wish.

Because of the way I work, my XP NTFS system has a very large number of shortcuts. (I really need a semantic network file system.)
Lately I've noticed some peculiar performance delays. The Favorites view, for example, has many shortcuts in it. They can take up to a minute to resolve fully into folders, until then they display a generic IE icon.

My work recently got new computers, so there were kind enough to let us take our old Dells home since they were like three years old. There was a ton of work stuff on this computer, so I decided to format the hard drive and start fresh. Everything was going great until I got to the place in the install where I have to enter the serial number for Windows 2000. I tried my home copy and it would not work. I tried a few other valid key codes and they still do not work.
