Net Use (write Access As Administrator)?
Dec 27, 2008
I'm trying to obtain write access to a shared folder on my computer via the following command:code: C:Documents and SettingsXXX>net use x: \127.0.0.1docs /u:XXXThe command completed successfully. If I go to My Computer > X: (Where X is the new network drive) I have read access to the files. However, I do not have write access. (For example, if I try to create a new folder)If I'm logged on as 'XXX', which is the user whom the folder belongs to, why do I not have write access to the folder when accessing it as a network drive?I am able to write to the folder if I go to C:Documents and SettingsXXX.docs but not through X:...

Windows XP Home SP2 account is an Administrator and I just installed a FPS game and I can't run that game because it produces an error saying that the games EXE folder needs to writable but when i try to make it writable windows tells me Access Denied. How do I correct this so I can play my game? Also, of the files and folder it DOES let me change the change doesn't actually happen it looks like it does but it doesn't.

I have Windows XP with sp2 i believe. I purchased this computer back in 2005 so its pretty old but i havent had many problems with it until recently. I didnt have internet for about 2 years so my comp was safe from viruses and whatnot. i just got internet about 2 months ago and since then my girlfriend has been downloading numerous files through frostwire, many containing viruses. I have an 80gig hard drive that has 2 partitions. one is my C: drive and the other is my D: drive which is my recovery drive. My computer did not come with any sort of recovery disk, only the 2nd partition on my hard drive

Everytime I boot I get an "Administrator has prohibited access to CD/DVD DRIVES and removable storage devices" All of my USB ports and my CD are greyed out with a red circle and bar symbol. I am running XP Pro with SP3. I am the only user of this computer and I did not restrict them. I have gone in with the secret administrator account and it is also locked.

I have several Administrator users. For each one I have set the username folder in Documents and Settings to allow network sharing including 'allow network users to change my files'. For all but one of the users this works fine and I can access and write files from another PC on the network. However in one case I can only read files and get the following message if I try to write: 'Cannot copy [filename]: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.' The settings appear to be the same for all users so I do not understand why I cannot write in this case. I've tried removing sharing then reapplying it, restarting PC, etc.

I cannot install new applications on my WinXP HE. I've tried 10 or more and all give me a similar problem: error during install. some say, that they do not have write access to "program files" dir, but that's nonsense, since the installer installs the directory and some files already.

Unfortunatly, a major thunderstorm passed thru my area and my computer was shut down hard and when I brought it up Windows was trashed, missing system files, some noise about disk-drive errors, etc. So I had to install Windows on another drive on the system. I can copy files from anywhere on the drive to the new windows drive except for "my documents" WEHRE OF COURSE Visual Studio Projects, Word documents, IPod, etc, everything, my important stuff is being kept being kept. The message I get is "Access is denied"
When I bring the system up in Safe Mode with networking and look at the security permission tab for that folder I see that my SID Is not there. When I try and add it (my user ID) it validates it and it looks like I can now have access to it, great, but when I click apply the response is "media is write protected" cannot apply permission changes. When I try and copy a file from my new windows drive to the original I get the message Drive is write protected
Try to defrag it from new windows - same message
Try to repair it from new windows - same message
Can anyone tell me where I could find this media write protect switch and where to change it. Windows XP, NTFS all drives, SCSI

I loaded Windows XP Pro onto 3 PCs and created an account for each PC named 'User' (current member of the 'Administrators' group). My problem is when I log off 'User' and attempt to switch to a different user, I am only presented with 'User' but not the 'Administrator' account (which is what I'd really like to log into). My objective is to remove 'User' from the administrators group, and manage the PC using the 'Administrator' account but I cannot do anything since I cannot log into the 'Administrator' account.

Okay, yesterday I downloaded 12.2MB .msi file for ActivePerl(Used for interactive Perl AI Bots), I got it, put it into My Documents and had to go to sleep after 30 minutes of downloading(Dial-up, gotta love it). Anyway, I got up the next morning and much to my dismay I got an error message saying "C:Documents and SettingsSammehMy DocumentsActivePerl-5.8.7.815-MSWin32-x86-211909.msi.Access is denied."Anybody know why this could be happening? The only idea I had was that I downloaded the wrong file, but I wanna be certain before spending 30 mins downloading again.

First of all, I'm running on XP Home Edition.Okay, so I have this folder. This folder has been edited so that only administrators can access it, and not restricted users. This works just fine but here's my problem: when I connect my computer to a second one, the admins on computer 2 cannot access this folder. I've tried for several hours to look for a way to add user groups and types from more than just computer 1, but I can't seem to do this. It's not a connection problem or because of any firewalls either; if I make the folder open for everyone the admin from computer 2 can access the folder properly. But then we didn't want any restricted accounts there.

I turned on my computer and found out that my regular user cant access task manager/run or turn off the computer. i am the only user on this computer and there is no network. the user is listed as administrator and i can change/create/delete other users which i tried. i created an admin user and that guy could do everything except access other user files. i looked into Administrators group and both were listed. when i do ctrl+alt+del it says Task manager has been disabled by computer administrator. but there's no administrator. there's a win98 computer that's connected to this one. but it's only used for internet by people who call a browser the internet every time my computer boots up it goes to a bios where date and time are change to weird numbers every time

I was attempting to set permissions on my two NTFS formatted external harddrives and essentially deny users and guests the right to create/delete any files on the drive but I guess it somehow managed to restrict that right for EVERYONE. Not even in safe mode as the Adminstrator can I even look at the permissions and apparently it will not even allow me to open any files either. I cannot copy files to another drive and I cannot open or run any executables. Is there any way at all for me to reset the permissions for this particular drive or perhaps alter them to work the way that they rest of them work for me. I can't for the life of me understand how the Administrator cannot access the files on a folder and I don't exactly know what higher privileged user type exists. I really don't want to have to reformat the drive because it's got about 350 gigs of videos/music/programs.

I was reading Medicatedsoap's thread about freeing space on a hard drive, I too would like to investigate freeing up some space from the C:|RRbackups and C:System Volume Information folders. However, even after signing on as an administrator and unhiding the "Protected Operating System Files" in Windows Explorer (Tools - Folder Options - View), these folders come up as "Access Denied" both in Windows Explorer and Treesize. How can I get access to these folders?I'm running Windows XP Home sp3 on an IBM Thinkpad laptop.

I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes".
However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes.

I'm using an HP Compaq laptop with XP Pro, bought a year ago, and set up for me by the vendor. The logon screen has always shown Administrator in a box, and I simply clicked on that to log on - over time it became routine and I thought no more about it.
Having only limited knowledge of the workings of computers, I was a little puzzled to find that I didn't have an option to set her account to 'Limited', but proceeded anyway. Her account was, of course, set up as an Administrator.I now find that I am completely unable to access my own account, and now understand that all this time I have been using it as System Administrator.

The only problem is that there are folders from Administrator account of Win2K that I need to access and it will not allow me to access it. I also have a USB connected disk drive and it won't even allow me to open that! I have NTFS.

I can only access my computer using the guest account. This is husband's computer and he has admin rights. When signing in to my or his account, we only get the wallpaper on the desktop with nothing else -- no task bar, no start, nothing to click on. I am limited in downloading/running virus scans because of the non-admin status.

I have a Dell 4600 with with 769MB Ram and Windows XP Pro. My XP boot sequence got corrupted (according to Dell) on my "C" drive. They wanted me to reformat the drive (and lose all my work). Instead I installed XP onto my secondary drive and nenamed it "C", set up a special partition on my secondary drive to receive the old files ("D") and renamed the "bad" drive to "G". Though I can access/copy most files from "G" onto "D", my "Documents and Settings/Administrator" directory on "G" (not password-protected, but contained a lot of files) are all "access-denied". I can't open/view these files on "G" or even copy them to "D". If I try to open them, I get a "files inaccessible, access is denied" msg.

I recently acquired a "new" laptop from PC Exchange. This unit was "off-lease" and came with 1.6 Pentium M and 1 gig of Ram. Both twice what I had on my previous machine. Needless to say, I love the performance. I originally ordered it without an OS, but it arrived with XP Pro installed. I have subsequently discovered through examination of the files that although the system had been "cleaned up," this is not a fresh XP Pro install, but rather the copy that was onboard when released from whatever corp was using it.

Normally I reinstall windows when I run in to this problem, 9 times out of 10 caused by a virus. This time I decided to try and restore policies and get rid of the virus by hand... but I couldn't find a guide telling how to get these policies back! Has anyone created a guide or done this before? I figure if the rights can be taken away, they surely can be given back.

Guest account feature is off. Two other accounts are normally available on the machine, Mine (named "RedCola") which is a passworded administrator account and a non-passworded limited access account.Tonight when trying to log on I accidentally typed the wrong password. When I entered the correct password on the second time it gave me a message that my account was locked and would have to contact my administrator. I rebooted just in case and the account was not available to select, but the generic Administrator account was now there. When I went into that account to check User Accounts though the Control Panel my account (named RedCola) was not even listed. I rebooted again. At the log-in screen I hit Ctrl+Alt+Del twice and typed in my account name and password. Again, same message about the account being locked.
