Am helping a friend get her Outlook Express working (pop3 server error), and wanted to go into msconfig to disable all items at startup in order to make sure no firewalls or anti-virus were causing problems. When she typed msconfig in the Run box, she keeps getting a 'word is misspelled try again' error message. Have you ever had this happen? As far as I know there is no other way to open the msconfig utility.

I've searched high and low and can't find any real reason.. And I'm the only account on my pc. Now for a new twist.. Today when I went by to do some maintainance on a business network out of curiosity I tried MSCONFIG on the computers there and lo and behold they all did the same thing.. These computers have nothing in common with mine as far as firewalls, antivirus, etc. (which I had read might be the culprit). The only thing I know that all have in common is they have all recently have had all Windows updates installed
When I click run and type in msconfig, I get a message saying Access Denied, need administrator privileges, etc.The thing is...I'm already logged in as Administrator automatically and even the icon in the Start menu shows this.

I just recently tried making changes to the startup using msconfig to try to fix a different problem, and in doing so, came across another. Whenever I try to make a change to the startup, I get a "an access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes".
However, I am the administrator when I'm making these changes.
Why doesn't this forum bump posts when you reply to them? What good does it do me to reply when the thread keeps sinking
Anyway...I did a search on my computer and have only found these 2 files relating to msconfig
Cannot access msconfig.exe even though I am logged on as the administrator, just get the following message. "An access denied error was returned while attempting to change a service you may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes" Have tried system restore three times to different dates and after each bootup I get the message after logging in "cannot restore to 26th DEC" or whatever other date I tried. Have also done a search for msconfig.exe and the only exe file is in the path C:WindowsPrefetch under the name MSCONFIG.EXE-35E4DAE9.pf. Am sure the correct file should me in a windows system folder but don't seem to be there.
View 6 Replies View Relatedran a Repair of windows XP on a machine that was fully updated and working fine. When it finished it says that the copy of windows is not genuine and it needs to be activated. So it tries to activate says there is a problem with the RPC Server. (0x000006ba) and then BSOD's. Safe mode loads fine. it still says the copy of windows is not genuine and cannot start the services to try and get it activated. I have tried running the repair again and SFC cannot run without the RPC Service so thats not an option.

I have had this pc now for 4 months and have been unable to reach their update sight, Whenever I click on their update icon or web site link, I always get the message "CANNOT ACCESS SERVER". I emailed their support site and was told that their site is working properly and to try the usual like disabling any antivirus and download managers, and to enable Java and popups. If I do a Start, Run, \computer it says "The network path was not found."There is no server on this particaular network it's all peer-to-peer, and I've enabled NetBIOS for good luck. Nothing. I cannot ping the other machines by name, either. All other machines in the network run fine.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling components of Network Connections, and TCP/IP is the only protocol installed. I have confirmed that all of the computers are in the same subnet and same work group.There is no firewall software installed on the machine, apart from XP SP2, and I've disabled that.

Option is to click on OK, but right after message appears it will open the page and I can open all the other net links normally, but not internal pages until message is gone. hi i'm very untechy, i am getting an rpc server error and cannot figure out how to fix it. it keeps rebooting my system. so it's in a continual state of shutdown and reboot. When I reboot, I can correctly sync to a time server, but after an unknown amount of time it goes back to saying "The RPC server is unavailable" instantly after clicking Update Now, regardless of what server I tell it to sync to. I also noticed that if I view my nForce Networking Controller status, then click Properties and go to the Authentication tab, everything is greyed out. If I hit OK without changing anything (I can't change it even if I wanted to), a message pops up saying "An unexpected condition occured. Not all of your requested changes in settings could be made" and just goes back to that window. I have to hit cancel to close it

I had a problem installing the Internet Printing Client for my lab. I got an error saying that there wasn't enough hard drive space. I then shut down my VM and added another hard drive. Upon startup I was greeted with: STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} i did this:Removing the virtual HDD I added before the problems started. Restarting the VM. Restarting the host machine. Trying the VM on another machine. Booting to .iso and using the repair console with the command chkdsk C: /r.

1. I've got to set up a Terminal Server Licensing server and was thinking about putting this on my second domain controller. I was wondering what would happen in this server dies, though.
