May seem like a dumb question but I've never had a dell before and this one is getting on my nerves.Ok short story is I inherited this PC from my late mother in law.She had only 256 ram so I bought 1GB and installed it and it still ran slow.Now my 7 year old downloaded a trojan virus which made the PC run even slower.I got rid of the trojan and it still runs slow.I figured I'd be better off just reinstalling windows but everyone wants atleast $80 to $100 to do it, I'd figured I could do it myself but have no idea how to with a Dell.It's an Dimension 1100 Series, has Intel Celeron CPU 2.53 Ghz, DVD/Cd-Rw, that's about it.

I have a fairly new computer PCU 70 Home Series, running Windows XP Home Edition. For protection I have: McAfee Firewall Norton Anti-Virus Spybot Search and Destroy Ad-Aware SE Personal CW Shredder iClean and the XP Security Centre. System seems to be running slow and not it self. Downloaded unregistered version of 'Registry Mechanic' telling me I have over 350 errors with system, but don't understand what or where these are.

And She can't access the internet from her system. She has contacted her internet provider, and they have assured her that everything checks out on their end, but she still can't connect.I was going to remotely download some software from my computer and send it to hers.
View 2 Replies View RelatedBasically ive been having problems with a computer for a while, everytime i connect my iPod or 512MB Memory stick it freezes my computer, but my printer is working fine through the usb?! It seems to be anything mass storage i think. I have reinstalled XP Home, downloaded all the updates, downloaded all the drivers for the computer from the Packard Bells website, deleted all the devices in device manager and let them find themself again but dont seem to do no good!
View 14 Replies View RelatedI dont know if this is in the right Forum as its a strange one.Just before i was playing on Counter Strike and the computer crashed.The power was still on, on the CPU, and also on the Speakers and Monitor.But the Monitor isnt picking up the Computer, ive tried a different monitor but to no avail.Ive basically just swapped all the wires over from the computer onto one of my old computers which im on now, and there was no problems what so ever.So clearly its something wrong with the other computer, but it still powers up and is running, but just nothing appears on my screen

It is running on windows xp sp3.Recently due to power issues my tablet got shutdown suddenly.Now each time I start, after hp logo instead of directly booting it says that "system was shut down unexpectedly due to recent software or hardware changes what do you want to do start in safe mode, safe mode with networking or start windows normally and so on" even though the previous shutdown was normal one.This message appears every time I start my windows even after system is shut down properly. Though the system boots normally when i select start windows normally and everyhting is fine thereafter this message is annoying everytime I start my windows. Have the previous sudden shutdown due to power interruption corrupted the registry

Well, now shes saying that she is STILL getting popups, tons of them. I know I took them out because I surfed the internet myself, and I didnt get a single popup... Shes also saying that her printer (hp laserjet 1100) is printing printer garb (garbled text)..... View 6 Replies View RelatedLet me quickly start by noting that I have familiarized and comprehensively searched every forum for assistance on this issue, and have attempted multiple fixes for the following problem. That said, if anyone absolutely knows what my problem is, and if is addressed elsewhere, please direct me. If not, thank you VERY MUCH in advance for your help!History: 30 GB HD filled up on Fiance's Inspiron 1100. I purchased a compatible 60 GB HD, enclosure, and then I cloned the original HD to the larger one.Then, after restarting the computer with the original drive still in the case, the computer failed to boot. So, after attempting to fix the original boot issue, I physically installed the new, 60 GB HD with the cloned drive on it. The computer fired right up. I was elated. Then I ran defrag. Not a good Idea.Defrag crashed at about 40% complete. I attempted to reboot the computer, to no avail. The computer seems to boot fine, but then gets stuck permanently at the Windows XP loading screen. The loading bar moves, the mouse moves.I can boot in safe mode, and access all my files (which i DID backup first). However, I want the damn thing to work, considering I just bought the new HD and the computer otherwise worked just fine.I ran CHKDSK from the recovery console, which found errors, but did no good. Then I ran CHKDSK /r, which took about 24 hours to complete. Errors found, some "unrecoverable," to no avail.I CANNOT access my system startup BIOS w/F2 (or any other key) during startup, no matter how early i start to tap the key. That is strange to me. Thus, I cannot boot from the XP CD.What do you all think my options are? The HD is physically OK, I think. The fact that safemode seems to function pretty flawlessly is a good sign, right?I have read to use bartPE to correct the registry. I have read to reinstall (?) the BIOS. I am ready to re-format the HD and re-install XP, but I'm not sure how to do this, or if I can do this via DOS or the recovery console, as again, I cannot access the system startup settings to change the boot sequence.Again, at this point, is there a way to fix this? If not, can I sweep off the HD and re-install XP? How might I do that?

My wife said that it had completed some updates this AM when she turned it on. This computer has a GE7600 video card. It also runs very hot so I'm wondering if perhaps the card might have cooked. Should I try to reinstall the driver?

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen my Mom proffers an invitation for remote assisance using MSN Messenger 7.0 she recieves the following: "Remote Assistance cannot connect because <user> denied the request for help". I've looked at some of the other, similar, threads posted on connectivity issues with 7.0 in these forums, but nothing seems to help. We can send and recieve each others video and audio. Also, the games work. I've tried to do this with a couple of other freinds with the same result. Before we were forced into the 7.0 upgrade there were no problems.
I've checked my settings to allow RA, reinstalled 7.0, tried using Windows Messenger, and have tried doing this with my firewall (ZoneAlarm) disabled.

View 4 Replies View Related2 days ago my itunes had problems connecting and then my msn explorer stopped connecting so did firefox i have internet explorer 7 installed i have done for ages i dont use it but get pop ups from starware sometimes an a message pops up sayin about working offline cause it cant connect i dont know if i accidently pressed work offline or not but my firefox will connect and work on safe mode. Another thing is when i turned off zone alarm my firefox connected in safe mode where as it did not when zone alarm was switched on this should not cause a problem though as my firefox and msn explorer always worked when zone alarm was switched on my msn messenger wont connect either i have tried resetting internet explorer now my internet explorer works and firefox but still not my msn explorer and msn messenger also i cant even open itunes

It recognizes the Ethernet cord connected, but it will not connect to the internet.ive tried : resetting the router typing in a manual ip address and all that.I took out the chip and dusted it off and well dusted out all the internals. everything seems to be running fine no reported issues.
