When I defrag my Hard Drive, it states there is a file that couldn't be defragged. This has just recently started, all other times I've had no problem.
The file is
WINDOWSPrefectchRUNDLL32.EXE-268BFF96.pf
she just defaged and she then restarted and now it wont start it says NTLDR is missing press any key 2 restart and when you press a key it says the same thing over and over again. what do i do or will i need 2 reformat?
I use a XP SP3.. n in my removable hdd automatically contain an 'autorun.inf'.it emerge after i connect the hdd to my frens pcs.. n whenever i double-click each partition of the hdd, an autorun file is activated. I looked up in my protected system files n found out that there is suspicious autorun.inf file show up as system files in each partition. but i knew there shouldn't be any info files, despite it is a system file. i think it also kind of virus jus it uses the standard autorun.inf for an info file, so that there is no any antivirus can detect it as a VIRUS.it seems that i couldn't delete it even i(as the administrator) cannot get access to change the attributes in virtual DOS command prompt - n i dunno how to get a real MS-DOS n don say to del/ah/f @ del /a:h /f delete it. access is denied.
Running W200. CPU 1300Hz, Memory 512000, 80 Gb HD. When I have three apps open, CPU usage goes to 100%. Have run CounterSpy -nothing, Adaware - nothing, SpyBot - Nothing. Have defraged.
When I used Win98 SE, I always defregged in safe mode. (Sorry, not sure where I read that was better) . So I just wanted to ask any of you as I am now using WinXP does it make any difference how you defrag?
A friend has a 30 gig XP Pro laptop with 17% free...When he runs defrag most of it is way fragmented...He runs through the defrag fine and after it completes it tells him he needs to defrag again...With no changes in the fragments...His computer is clean of spyware/adware/virus/trojans/etc
I didn't open any suspicious emails, shared on P2P networks and certainly made no changes in system files. Only thing I did was what I do periodically. I defragged my hard drive, uninstalled games and went into msconfig and stopped 3 programs from start up (DEAMON tools, PowerISO and SQL service) I was also having problems with the SpyCop package so I uninstalled and reinstalled.
So I restarted (like I should) and the only process it goes through is the DELL start up "splash screen" After that it usually does the Windows XP "splash screen" but it never does the Windows XP screen, it just stays black, nothing. I pressed F2 to see if anything changed and nothing seemed to, as far as I know. I tried F8 to enter safe mode and a couple lines of text show up and stop and hang. I even tried to let it sit there to see if maybe it's just getting used to the defrag job(s) I did, still black. It's still black as I type this.
When i try to do a clean sweep of windows.I throw in my windows re-installation disk and wait for it to do hardware config. when it finally reaches the making of the partition.i follow as intructed quick format when it gets to 69% it says it couldn't copy dxdiagn.dll this happend on every windows pro disk i have and i don't know what the hell is going on i tried to use a different cd drive, but nope still does the samethig it's a emachine.
I see that there are updates that need to be installed. So I click the balloon to install them. It tries to install them but then says some updates couldn't be installed. What do I do?
Another problem that occurred about the same time that the "about:blank" problem showed up was one that showed that something couldn't be loaded with McAfee when the desktop was coming up (a scripting problem), and that I had to select "yes" to have java scripts to work.
I was working on my computer last night and everything was fine. This morning I turned it on and got a message saying windows couldn't start because the file windowssystem32configsystem was missing or corrupt. The only option that I seem to have is to reformat and reinstall all the software which will wipe out all of my files. It have weeks of work on that computer. I sometimes back up online but it's been a long time since I've done that. Is there someway that I can fix it without a total reinstall?
My PC began looping from the Dell splash screen to the Windows start-up screen, then clicking off and repeating....over and over. I tried several things and couldn't even get System Restore to work. Finally, after several well-intended friends had me fooling with my command prompts (I'm sure that was a mistake), I decided to just reinstall Windows XP. Well, now it's reinstalled, but I can't connect to the internet, none of my drivers are recognized and nothing is showing up on my desktop, When I go into My Computer and look on my hard drive, all of my programs and files are still there....but the operating system doesn't seem to know where to find them. I have a desktop Dell Dimension 4600.
i have both windows and linux 9 in 80 Gb hard disk. 30 Gb is allocated for the linux. The rest in 50 i got only 45 Gb in that, where is the another 5 Gb..
I have been searching this site for possible threads relating to my problem, but couldn't find it. I apologize if I am redundant. Windows wont boot suddenly. It had worked fine for a long time till now. It shows the Windows XP logo, but wont show the user names to log in. I tried to boot from the windows XP CD, but when it tries to fix problems, a message appears saying that Windows couldn't find a hard drive. I checked my hard drive and its perfectly connected.
I have a modem/fax in my computer and I also have high speed Internet access using a DSL modem. I have connected the modem/fax and the DSL modem to the same phone line using the filter. I intalled the Winfax PRO software in order to use my computer for send/receive faxes. The installation was OK. But this software doesn't work. When I try to send a fax I give the number, I heard the tone but when the Winfax PRO software try to negotiate with the fax I receive an error and I lost the connection. I don't know If the problem is because my phone line was setup for DSL modem. Does anybody has the same problem? Until now I couldn't send or receive any fax.
I try to install something using windows installer, I get the "preparing to install" screen and then it says that windows installer couldn't be accessed. I'm not running in safe mode, and I didn't do anything to change this. I looked online and it said to go into the registry and check the msiexec file to make sure its in the system folder, and it is. I've tried re installing and even though it says it successfully reinstalled, it still wont work.
OK, I downloaded Diskkeeper premium the other night and it ran through my disk and defragged. Later, the system (running slow) so I uninstalled it. Still ran terrible. Did a system restore and upon booting, XP couldn't find ntoskrnl.exe. I never could get xp back up and going into the recovery console from the XP setup disk showed the windows folder was empty. I'm guessing the system restore wiped it and didn't complete reloading the contents which is why it was empty. I pulled the drive and hooked it up to another system as a second drive and was able to get some vital data files but most that
I needed were corrupt and wouldn't copy.i put the drive back in the machine it was in, started a fresh install of XP sp2 and it loads all files and when it starts windows to do the install, it hangs at 33 minutes remaining. Changed the drive and started with another good drive. Same thing. Got another XP sp2 disk in case some files were corrupt on the original although I had used it many times prior with no problem. Still the same thing. Gets to 33 minutes remaining on the install and just never gets any farther
My computer starts up. It goes to the gateway screen where I have options to press f2 and f10. Then it goes to the screen that I don't know what to call where I have an option to press f11...something I'd like to avoid doing if possible. Then it goes to a new screen saying that windows couldn't start up and gives me 5 options: Safe mode, Safe mode with Networking, Safe mode with Command Prompt, Last known settings that worked, and Start Windows Normally. Last known settings that worked and Start Windows Normally both go to the windows loading screen, which loads for a bit, and then my computer resets. All three Safe Modes start running off system32 directories and stop at system32DrivesagpCPQ.sys before my computer resets.
so i tried to fresh install windows and format my drives and when xp setup formats the drive and restarts it gives me this error tried alot of combinations of partitions but none work.
A friend was being bombarded with pop-ups, so I ran two programs which I use on my own computer and have installed on many others; they are "Spybot" and "AdAware." He is running Windows XP Pro. This friend of mine does not go to porn or gaming sites (and I found no evidence that he did), or gambling sites, with the exception of one casino site that has never caused any problems for him
The first time I ran Spybot, it detected 249 problems but couldn't remove some because they were running at the time of the scan, and gave me a choice of running Spybot again the next time the computer was started. I chose yes and it found 197 problems this time and couldn't fix 30 of them. I chose yes again to run Spybot on the next boot, and this time it said that it could not fix 44 problems. I ran RegCleaner and it took out some files but I didn't count them. I then ran Norton WinDoctor which found and fixed eight problems. I followed this with a scan with AdAware, which found 1,083 problems!! It could not fix 235 of them and on the reboot it could not fix 177 of them. The next scan showed 168 problems and could not fix 60 of them on reboot. When I rebooted, a Welcome screen requiring a password for the Username "Owner" came up so I called the guy and asked him if he had ever used a password with this system, and he said no. Now I cannot get into his system at all!
This is the problem I'm faced with and don't know what to do from here. After deleting current partition and then formatting in NTSF file system, it goes through the process of preparing for installation. When it reboots, it says the following:"couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1)"If I take the XP CD out it just has blank screen with blinking cursor in the top left corner.
problem with internet explorer. when i close ie, it shows an error message like this, "The instruction at"0x0291341a" referenced memory at "0x029c2b18". The memory could not be read". Then after i just left with ok button to go with. if i click 10-15 times on the same till that it will continuously shows message and then after it works well. But this message bugs me all the time when i close ie.
I recently ran into some CD-Rom problems and the hp website recommended that I uninstall and re-install Record now, which is a CD burning program that comes standard with Windows XP.I did uninstall it, but when I reinstalled it, an error message kept popping up when I tried to use it saying that the program couldn't initialize and that I would have to restart the computer or re-install the software.I need the following: a way to redownload the file from a different source in an EXE form, or I need a free program that can Make exact copies of CDs, create my own music cds or create data discs.
I try andf keep up with some of the stuff that goes across, here. Its hard, but I always know if I got a computer problem, this is the place for help. I was looking at a computer and it always lagging. I couldn't find any bad tasks running.

My toshiba laptop detected the wireless network in range, but when I try to browse nothing comes out!!!will reinstalling the windows solve the problem, to ensure that all drivers are defined??
I had bought several hard drives as is, hoping one of them would work. thought I had one, but turned out I couldn't install XP onto the disk, wouldn't copy any files. so I pretty much cut my loss on the drives and removed it the bad one from pc. now I get 2 options when booting windows. my original xp install, and the 2nd install that still needs to complete, how can I stop it from wanting to install xp again from the boot file and keep the original settings as they were?
When trying to install Win XP SP2 there was always a message telling me that it coudn't detect the HDD (Checked Bios, it is detecting everything: Processor, Ram, DVD units and HDD) Well, after several times trying, i decided to put the HDD on my nephew's computer and install Win XP w/o the drivers. Back to my system, connected the HDD and turn it on, but when the XP logo appears, the system reboots, and it happened every time i tried it.
Having a copy of Vista (30 days sample) i decided to install it, and it was installed w/o problems, everything was perfect. So (at last) my cuestion is ...Can i install Win XP on this system? or,there is a feature on P35 that only accept Vista?, orthere is something that i forgot to do? I want XP and not Vista (I will need to buy Vista and I dont have $$$, yet)
My EZ security software expired and within a couple of days I couldn't access the Internet. I have since installed Norton 2006 and ran a scan but I still can't access. I can use Outlook Express OK though. I followed instructions off another site which is recommended before posting a HijackThis log. I ran the ATF Cleaner, then created a restore point. I then ran Ad-aware SE bt couldn't run the webupdate feature as I have no internet connection due to this problem. I ran the scan anyway. I then ran AVG Anti-spyware though again couldn't update the definition files because I couldn't connect due to the problem I have. I ran the scan anyway. I couldn't run the Panda Activescan because I again can't connect. I have attached the report from the AVG Anti-spyware scan along with the HijackThis report and uninstall_list. I am posting this from my friends PC so will have to go back and forward to do what you recommend.
