I just now installed the KDE Cygwin (kde-cygwin)for Windows on my Win XP SP2 machine. However, upon restart I am now receiving the message "NTLDR Missing". I have tried following the instruction found on numerous forums and at computerhope.com but I continue to receive the same message every restart. This is what I have done so far: Restarted with the Win XP CD-ROM and went to the Recovery Console. Logged into my C: drive using the admin password. Copied "F:i386NTLDR" and "F:i386NTDETECT.com" to the root of my C drive. Ran "bootcfg /rebuild" and then "fixboot". After doing all of the above I restarted and am still met with the "NTLDR Missing" message. Again I booted back into the Recovery Console and checked to see what had been written into the boot.ini file using "bootcfg /list" and this is what I got:
[1] ""
OS Load Options:
OS Location: C:WINDOWS
Does this look right?? I tried typing the "fixmbr" command in and was met with the message, "This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record." which was followed the threat that if I continued then I might lose all of the data on my drive, which is not an option for me. I am trying to avoid the need run a "repair installation" from the Win XP boot CD. That would require a lot of PITA work to update Windows back to SP2 and reinstall a bunch of other apps.

System Windows X/P Home SP2
When I defrag my Hard Drive, it states there is a file that couldn't be defragged. This has just recently started, all other times I've had no problem.
The file is

my XP install started acting up and whenever it loaded the XP boot screen, my HDD light stayed on, and after a couple of minutes, my computer restarted itself. To find the problem, I started XP in safe mode, and it went to load up till a file mup.sys(?), can't remember. I re-plugged my SATA cable (I have a Samsung SpinPoint 160GB on a MSI P965 Neo-F running a Core 2 Duo E6600 at stock clocks), switched the cable, and checked that my mobo's bios was emulating the RAID device on IDE. The thing is, every other OS finds my HDD (even Win 2000!): Linux, Vista, Mac OS-X (I was desperate). I'm running openSUSE 10.2 right now, and I desperately need Windows back! My dad won't let me install Vista yet.

I initially had a problem with my xp which came up with a missing Hal.dll file and wouldnt boot. I tried using the xp recovery disc and eventually tried using Fixboot, thinking (foolishly?) that this is would help fix it. It now gives me a NTLDR error... Any suggestions as to how to fix this, have even tried slaving it externally but it only shows up a small completely empty drive at the moment, either 10mb or 10gb cant really remember,

Im getting a new hard drive to replace one that failed. My OS is on the old drive but I want to move the OS to the new drive (b/c it will be clean and free of spyware and such...I want a clean install) when i recieve it. If i install the OS on the new one (which I will designate as the master drive), and i boot up, (then delete it from the old drive) will my computer get 'confused'? How should I go about doing this? I dont want to lose any of the data on the 'old' OS drive so I'm scared to remove Windows from it.

My son has phoned me. In spite of loads of precautions he is in trouble again.Three months ago his Mesh desktop gave him the thumbs down when his Maxtor 160Gb failed. he bought another and another copy of XP Home because he couldn't put his hand on the first one (money to burn).HD1 has been formatted and set upo with an installation of XP in reserve. His usual copy is on the new Maxtor, HD0. I understand that all of his data is held in separate partition and that he has a backup of his O/S using Acronis True Image v8, and a bootable rescue CD. Hid HD0 failed and he tried to format it to restore his backup. No go.Now he can't get his XP on HD1 to boot. His rescue CD won't boot. His True Image install disk which can be a rescue disk won't boot andall he gets on POST is "NTLDR is missing".

I downloaded some automatic updates and restarted my puter as instructed. However, when I restarted the computer it continuosly restarted and restarted just as it got to the desktop. So I started up in safe mode thinking i could restore back to before I installed the updates. But it seems W2k doesn't have this capability, so i uninstalled the latest Windows update I found on my puter. Okay, I can get to the desktop but my Internet connection no longer works and the browser just keeps popping open windows like it has constant hiccups or something. I bought this puter second hand so I don't have any disks or anything. Does anyone have any ideas? Are these components I uninstalled located somewhere on the HD where i can retrieve them and maybe undo this mess?

I have an older laptop in which the hard drive and broken on, I was hoping to fix it so that my in-laws could use it to keep in touch with family via Skype. So...I purchsed a new 20gb hard drive and fitted it yesterday. The laptop booted up ok but after the Bios screen displayed an error message of "ntldr is missing press ctrl, alt, delete to restart" When I rebooted with my Windows XP cd in it's gets just past the Bios screen and then displays some errors in French! The jist of these errors I think is that the boot.ini file could not be found. I tried to reboot but I still get another error message in french! From what I can see it does not say anything about boot.ini this time though. I have also tried a XP Recovery Console Repair to no avail either and have exhausted everything I know. what I need to do to install XP onto this HDD (it has been formatted too)? Any explanation on why the messages are in French? Also one thing to mention is that when I manage to boot with XP Live CD and use Command Prompt the letters I type on the keyboard come out all wrong ie. : comes out as * and m comes out as 0

I have taken a hitachi hdd that had xp home on it, put it solo in a machine (cuz it is larger tryin' to upgrade) that had been using & working perfectly fine with 2k pro. got a missing os error. read dozens more. own full store bought version of the afore mentioned xp. tried to boot from cd, does NOT appear to even recognize anything is in the drive. went into bios made sure cd was 1st boot, still "missin os" still doesn't see cd in drive. here is where i would like some more detail pleez, mind you i'm a beginner, yet have a keen interest in computers. now i read that computers don't like swaps of os too hot, so i pulled the xp hdd back out of the 2k machine set it up as slave in the machine i'm using now (it's actual "birth" machine) & formatted it, then deleted it from the drivers before removing it. put it back in the rig that runs 2k, now the error states "NTLDR is missing". by the way i corrected the jumpers both swaps. tried the cd again still ntlrd error. went into bios, confirmed recognition of hdd, yep pretty as a picture. does'nt formatting wipe the thing clean (for my intent & purpose)? i have to be missing a step here, i mean why won't the thing read the cd? the cd rom works, i read something about possibly not being able to boot from it though!?

Everything was fine last night when i was on my computer but when i woke up this morning and booted her up i recieved the "NTLDR is missing" error message with instructions to use control+alt+delete to restart and try again. I have not recently installed any new hardware or changed configurations and the only new software is Diablo2 and its expansion which has been on my computer for a week now (its run fine in the past and never caused any problems). I've been reading through the forums for most of the day and tried several different suggestions to fix my problem but to no avail. I've tried using a boot disk i made off of a friend's computer, rebuilding the boot record using the recovery console, and i even tried that NTLDR "fixer" disk that i downloaded from a link i frequently see posted. Nothing has worked. The only interesting thing is that when i use that fixer program (the one that gives you 10 boot options and you have to go through every one to find one that works) is that instead of getting a missing NTLDR message, i get a hal.dll error instead! So i go back into my XP cd and expand the hal.dll into the system32 folder on my drive and try again but now i'm back to the NTLDR error!
I really dont know what to do here and any help is appreciated! Also, i'm not tp sure how vital this is but my drive is labeled D: although it is the only HDD in my computer, when i try to use the recovery console i only have one option for an OS to explore and it is labeled C:. I'm not sure if how this happened is important to my current situation but i can explain it if necessary. Again, any suggestions here would be a big help and hope to hear from you soon. Oh, formating is also out of the quesion as i have no backups of my current papers, projects, and other data.

Evening all I am attempting to create a boot CD slipstreaming SP2. I have an original XP cd and I need to integrate SP2 into it so it will recognize my new Seagate 1T HD. After following all the instructions from http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Win [...] ootcd.html using IsoBuster and CDBurnerXP when I attempt to boot to the CD it says the NTLDR is missing. I open the CD (on another pc) and confirmed the file contained the ntdet and ntldr. I am not good with this type of stuff and am looking for some suggestions on what I should do at this point. My ultimate goal is to simply load XP on my new 1T hard drive.

I know there is already a thread out there for this error. However, it is not solving my problem. My 160 Western Digital HDD is brand new. After the very first partition, OS install, and boot the system went to the "Windows is starting set up" blue screen. It hung up there. 10 minutes later I shut off the system and tried to boot from the HDD. This yielded the NTLDR error. Repartitioning with XP and reinstalling the OS ON A DIFFERENT COMPUTER worked. Hooking it up to my computer and booting from the HHD resulted in an "Operating system is missing error". Re-booting from the XP CD took me to the "Windows is starting set up" blue screen. a few seconds later the screen went blank. No windows start up screen, nothing I Can't get to the recovery console.

My moms computer had a big red X next to the C: Drive, so I ran AVG and it wouldnt work it just froze up. So I did some poking around online and found Vundo. So I ran it and it found a bunch of stuff and then deleted it all. Then when I restarted the PC I get the "NTLDR is missing, Press ctrl-alt-delete to restart" error message. So I found out how to fix that with a boot disk. Here comes problem number one. the recovery disk is HP Windows XP sp2. Im not sure if the OS is the same because the disk is from my laptop. (both are HP windows xp) So I put in the disk, hit ctrl-alt-del and press enter to boot from disk. Everything looks normal, it says windows setup, and is loading files at the bottom of the screen. At the welcome screen I press R and am taken to the recovery console. This is where it gets weird.

Right after Windows XP security update yesterday 1/21/2010 I found my computer was off. This was normal after an windows update. So I turned my computer back on and received an error message of "NTLDR is missing". After trying twice to re-boot, with the same error, upon checking my startup BIOS file I found the BIOS record had been altered to boot using the wrong hard disk.

Booting up a Dell Dimension 9100. It has been working fine for 2 weeks since reformatting. Today, I tried to boot the machine and it gave the ntldr missing error message but it was in french. I put the install disk in and ran the fixboot and chkdsk utilities from command line. It booted up and ran fine. I shut down and tried to reboot again and the error message appeared again. Corrupt bios? I plan on updating the bios tomorrow and trying that. I have never seen a bios error message appear in French. Has anyone ever seen this before?

It started with the NTLDR is missing error,so I load the recovery console and prepare to copy it to the drive when I notice ALL the boot files are missing, in fact every file on the root of C drive is gone.So I make a boot disk from my lap top copy the boot files to the disk and give this a try. Boots fine and seems to run perfect. Copy the boot files to the C drive, reboot numerous times, all good so I go home, leaving him the boot disk and showing him what to do just in case.
Next day same thing, What we seem to have determined is that the files seem to disappear later in the evening. I had him run all the pgms he normally does for a good while, quit the pgm and check C. The files are still there. after a few hours of fooling around he leaves PC on and goes watch TV. Comes back about 11:00pm to turn off PC, checks C drive and they're gone again. He re copies the files, shuts down and goes to bed.Next day PC boots fines before work, after work etc... BUT some time later in the evening it happens again.
