I just now installed the KDE Cygwin (kde-cygwin)for Windows on my Win XP SP2 machine. However, upon restart I am now receiving the message "NTLDR Missing". I have tried following the instruction found on numerous forums and at computerhope.com but I continue to receive the same message every restart. This is what I have done so far: Restarted with the Win XP CD-ROM and went to the Recovery Console. Logged into my C: drive using the admin password. Copied "F:i386NTLDR" and "F:i386NTDETECT.com" to the root of my C drive. Ran "bootcfg /rebuild" and then "fixboot". After doing all of the above I restarted and am still met with the "NTLDR Missing" message. Again I booted back into the Recovery Console and checked to see what had been written into the boot.ini file using "bootcfg /list" and this is what I got:
[1] ""
OS Load Options:
OS Location: C:WINDOWS
Does this look right?? I tried typing the "fixmbr" command in and was met with the message, "This computer appears to have a non-standard or invalid master boot record." which was followed the threat that if I continued then I might lose all of the data on my drive, which is not an option for me. I am trying to avoid the need run a "repair installation" from the Win XP boot CD. That would require a lot of PITA work to update Windows back to SP2 and reinstall a bunch of other apps.

So my sister gets hold of a computer in the house and ruins it, and here is the dilemma I am facing: I turn on the computer and right away i come to this message....
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
windowssystem32configSYSTEM
Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

I initially had a problem with my xp which came up with a missing Hal.dll file and wouldnt boot. I tried using the xp recovery disc and eventually tried using Fixboot, thinking (foolishly?) that this is would help fix it. It now gives me a NTLDR error... Any suggestions as to how to fix this, have even tried slaving it externally but it only shows up a small completely empty drive at the moment, either 10mb or 10gb cant really remember,

Im getting a new hard drive to replace one that failed. My OS is on the old drive but I want to move the OS to the new drive (b/c it will be clean and free of spyware and such...I want a clean install) when i recieve it. If i install the OS on the new one (which I will designate as the master drive), and i boot up, (then delete it from the old drive) will my computer get 'confused'? How should I go about doing this? I dont want to lose any of the data on the 'old' OS drive so I'm scared to remove Windows from it.

My son has phoned me. In spite of loads of precautions he is in trouble again.Three months ago his Mesh desktop gave him the thumbs down when his Maxtor 160Gb failed. he bought another and another copy of XP Home because he couldn't put his hand on the first one (money to burn).HD1 has been formatted and set upo with an installation of XP in reserve. His usual copy is on the new Maxtor, HD0. I understand that all of his data is held in separate partition and that he has a backup of his O/S using Acronis True Image v8, and a bootable rescue CD. Hid HD0 failed and he tried to format it to restore his backup. No go.Now he can't get his XP on HD1 to boot. His rescue CD won't boot. His True Image install disk which can be a rescue disk won't boot andall he gets on POST is "NTLDR is missing".

I was recently given a compaq sr1330nx desktop computer that didn't work. After putting in a different power supply it started right up. It hadn't been used in over a year and I downloaded the 62 high priority updates needed and installed them. The next morning when I started it up it was very slow and unresponsive. I ran the error check utility and defragmented the hard drive. Still very slow and inconsistent. Then is when I probably screwed up and reset the 2 jumpers on the motherboard and went into the bios and checked "reset configuration". Now all I can get is a line of white bars across the bottom of a black screen and the message "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: C:windowssystem32configsystem. You can attemt to repair this file by starting windows setup using the original setup cd-rom. select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

Well, I woke up this morning to turn on my computer, and I got an error like this. "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: windowssystem32configsystem. You can try repairing by using the original windows xp setup cd, press r on the first screen." Well, after scrounging for the xp cd, I put it in and booted from the cd, tried to do a repair install, but the repair option was not available. I could only install another copy of xp (onto the current copy) which I didn't want to do if it means that all my data is lost (I really don't want to lose them again!).I exited and googled up on why repair was not an option (I'm using my laptop btw), and some random dude told another guy with a similar problem to do chkdsk and bootcfg in recovery console. I went into recovery console and kind of played around with bootcfg, and I used the /rebuild function thinking it was repair, and then it asked me to type something and I was confused, so i entered "n" (for no). Well, basically now when I restart I have the option of booting up "Xp Home Edition" or "n", both of which lead to the missing file message, but how did I make two windows? And can I get rid of this "n" windows I made?

Last night, my PC started randomly restarting when I was copying files from a CD. It did it a few times, and I thought it may have just been overheating. However, now when I start my computer now, there is no BIOS and just a blank screen which is there for a good few mins. Then the loading bar (You know the one, White rectangles is all that's on the screen...just before windows loading screen) appears. However it only loads VERY slowly and when it gets to about an inch of the way in, I get a message telling me that a file is missing/corrupt and I can use the recovery console to fix it. Does anyone have any tips on how to use the console to repair this? I only want to reinstall windows as a very last resort. The file that is missing is: windowssystem32c_850.nls

XP PRO SP2- Recieve the following message upon unsuccessful boot attempt. "WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT: <WINDOWS ROOT> SYSTEM32HAL.DLL (not yelling ) I have tried to boot from my xp pro cd to utilize the recover utility however the computer will not boot from the cd. I able to use a dos boot disk however my keyboard is USB and I cannot find USB drivers to work under dos, so I was unable to do anything at that point. It was my hope that I could work through dos to edit the boot.ini file.
I do not want to reinstall windows. If I have to I will place the hard drive in another computer as a slave and work on it that way but I'd rather not. The only other tower type computer I have other then laptops is running xp home SP2.

After loading an updated version of QuickBooks today, I attempted to restart my computer and received this error message: Windows XP could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: WINDOWSSYSTEMS32CONFIGSYSTEM. Attempted "typical recovery methods", then inserted Reinstallation CD for Windows XP Professional (SP2) that came with DELL computer (pre-installed). Followed steps to "Welcome to Setup" blue screen. Pressed r to repair. Followed steps to chkdsk /r command. Process began. After process reached 38%, there was no more activity---for almost 1.5 hours. Seemed frozen. Turned off computer. Tried, unsucessfully, to follow Microsoft instructions found online. At the Recovery Console command prompt, created 'md tmp', then attempted to "copy c:", etc. Each time I entered a "copy c:" line, I was given the message: "Cannot copy...". Not sure if this is happening because I have a DELL disk, rather than original Windows XP disk?If so, any way around this?
