Dr Watson Error - Cannot Open Files Screen Freeze
Mar 1, 2005
I'm using Windows XP on Toshiba Satellite 1415 S173. The problem that I'm having is that every time I attempt to open any file on my desktop or anything such as 'my computer' 'my documents' or 'control panel' etc. the screen freezes and eventually i get an error that says "Drwatson postmortem debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close".

1. Let me clarify that I am NOT USING the same computer that has the problem. I am on a friends computer, so anything I download from majorgeeks will have to be burned to a disk and RAN IN SAFE MODE because my laptop will only run in SAFE MODE until I resolve this issue.1. HP PAVILION ZT3349cl running Windows XP Home, SP2
2. As of 2 days ago the DESKTOP will FREEZE when it is loading startup icons and the mouse arrow keeps a "busy" symbol and it cannot select the "start" button, cannot click on anything on the desktop, just stays frozen in a "loading"position. I cannot get my laptop to do anything, so I have to CTL, ALT, DEL and do a "Restart" in SAFE MODE, and then I cannot get on the internet or anything in Safe Mode.

I'm using Windows XP SP2 on this computer, and last night the computer froze while waking up (I don't "shut down" every time, i hibernate the system). I restarted and windows froze again on the startup screen. I restarted in safe mode and ran a disk check (scheduled it for next restart). The system booted up after the disk check completed (it said it found and fixed errors). However, it was dead slow,. I have avira antivir personal(updated with the latest definitions), I ran a full system scan, and it found nothing but a "hidden object". Here's the report:-
Avira AntiVir Personal

Recently I have received a problem where I can't open a folder that has a gigabyte or more space used. I have several folders that contain a little less than a gb and they open and let me do what I want without any problems. When I open a folder with a gb or more it opens and lets me see the files and then I get a Windows Explorer popup saying that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to shut down, I clicked the error report and this is what it says: AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: filesystemflags.dll
ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 00002ddd
And when I close the Windows popup I get a Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger popup and I clicked the error report but it won't let me read the details, so I have to Ctl, Alt, Del to close the non-responsive program.I have scanned the computer for virses and spyware and came up negative on both of those, so I don't know what is wrong or what to do to fix this. I have previously had folders with several gb's used when I was storing video to transfer to dvd and I never had this problem.

Dr Watson postmortem debugger error in SP2 when trying to access external usb2 drives? Specifically large video files. The drive freezes completely.I have two external drives on a hub, and have one on an alternate port. I've split them and tested separately, to no avail. Also tried uninstalling usb drivers, running norton/adaware/spybot because I read something about a virus. Never had a speed or freeze issue in SP1 running HUGE videos, or editing software from multiple disks.I only see a few suspects on hijackthis log (a second dr watson?), but don't know enough - and I'm curious whether SP2 might be the culprit.

I have a Compaq-based computer running WinXP SP2 on it and for a little while I've had explorer.exe crash on me from time to time just out of the blue. Well a new problem has risen and it started today and its a nasty one. I was testing out a file-sharing program, but it said I needed the latest Java update to run it, so I went to the Sun Java website and downloaded their J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 06 (that's what was on the site) and got that all set up and started checking out the program I had downloaded earlier (Limewire Basic) from Filehippo.com and as soon as I clicked on a file from the list of files that came up in my search, the program would instantly close out without notification. I didnt see it as a big deal. I got a hold of the file I was downloading, but every time I went to or near the folder in my personal folder's directory, explorer.exe decided to crash on me. So I thought I might have caught a virus, so I looked to see if it was on some programs I've used in the past for finding trojans and whatnot and it came up clean. So I uninstalled and deleted LimeWire and thought maybe the Java had something to do with it. Turns out I was wrong again. So right now this machine has no Java on it. So I went into safe mode and still could not get to the folder with the file in it. Explorer.exe AND the Dr Watson Postmortem Debugger app both crashed on me (got that normal error in which you can send out an error report to Microsoft) and it did this several times.
So then I booted the computer back into the normal mode and attempted to get to the file through the cmd.exe (DOS) program and I eventually figured out (with the help of someone on my buddylist) how to get to the specific directory that the folder was in and I tried to delete it, but everytime I typed "Y" to the prompt, cmd.exe would crash as well. Now it sais that there are 0 files in the folder (has 3 subfolders in it) that I was trying to delete and 5 folders (including the "." & ".." on the DOS prompt. So I've been screwing around with this for about 4 1/2 hours now and I've had no luck getting to that specific folder. If I try to get to it through my folder, explorer.exe crashes. I can get right to the directory that the folder is in and then it will just crash. Everything else seems to run just fine. I havent tried checking the disk check thing, but what does one reccomend I do? I've already reformatted this computer once before (last year) and I dont want to have to do it again (because I dont have the money or the WinXP disk to get it reformatted again).

I browsed through the posts of this forum and I hope you can help me to sort this issue out. I often experience dr Watson postmortem to cause my Windows Explorer to freeze. This is particularly true when I display a number of pictures in a folder directory as icons or when I open a divX file with Windows Media Player. Sometimes, even when I drag and drop a media file (the longer the file the higher the risk), I experience system freezes. The only way to recover that is by stopping the operation through the task manager.I understand that the problem is not with dr Watson per se: this is just the debugger, but I cannot sort the cause of the problem out.

I have ms bundled on windows XP my hp pavilion 1335w. I have saved a lot of word processing documents for my new (3 mos.) job. Now when I try to re-open them for revisal, or even just to look at them, I get a msg in a small window that says "Works task launcher cannot open the file you selected. It may have been either moved or deleted." If I can't get to some of these, I will lose my job! And I don't even know where to go for help, this is the first place i've tried. Can someone either sove the problem, or tell me when I can go for the answer?

After ending a non-responsive program, I often get an error message that Dr. Watson Post Mortem Debugger has encountered an error and needs to quit. I know that Dr. Watson is a software utility that helps log errors after a windows program encounters an error, how can I fix this so that I dont get an error message?

I have had this problem since I reinstalled win xp. Whenever I try to open a link in IE in a new browser window, the IE freezes up. The system doesn't crash. The original IE screen goes blank for a few seconds and then re appears as if nothing happened. This is also the problem with links that open new browser windows.
I'm at my wits end and don't know what to do.

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...oot-black.html
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.
All 3 safe mods work fine.
Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.
Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.
The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv
Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.
I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.any help?

Anytime I try to open up a .avi file my computers CPU boosts up to 100%. I have tried Neros showtime and windows media player and both do the same. I have the latest directx and have installed the Klite codec pack. I originally did not have the codec pack installed and it was causing the problem. Any ideas?

Recently, about a week ago, my PC froze so I had no choice but to manually shut it down. After I rebooted it, any files aside from program icons and windows explorer icons were gone (i.e folders, videos, pictures all gone).
I am no expert on how to recover these. I had some really important, and meaningful files from there

over the last 2 days i have gotten the BSoD and the error that comes up is that NV4_DISP is the cause of it every time. i looked it up and that is in my nvidia files. All my windows are updated, as is my direct X, nvidia drivers. i scaned for virus, spywear, anything i could think of.No errors come up anywhere, no virus, no spywear, according to my machine everything is running right. So my quesiton is, why the BSoD and if it keeps coming up in my video card, does that mean its dying ?

I reformat the drives and during the XP Home Discs process of copying files for the installation, the process freezes the system anywhere from 11% at driver.cab to 54% at some random file (i didnt take note). I have tried 2 different XP home Discs (both legal etc.) and two different disk drives, though both are new. and still it is yielding the same result. I have also tried loosening the ram timings to 5-5-5-15 (they are rated at 4-4-4-12). No luck and this is beggining to wear me down.

I took it home and attempted to install windows xp on it and in the process things got messed up. I started up the computer and logged in. Once in, I inserted the Windows XP install so as to upgrade it and the process started out fine. Well it got to the point where it said it needed to restart in order to contiinue with the process, which it did. It restarted and began copying files, and it tossed out a few error messages. They were: could not copy file: spra0410.dll & spra0411.dll I tried to write them all down but I couldn't catch the all. I do know however there were about six files, all similar to the ones above, that didn't copy. I'm not too sure what to do at this point because now the computer won't go to windows at all. It goes through the start up screen all the way to the point where it says "press any key to continue", but then just kind of freezes and won't go any further. I've tried pressing a button to go forward, also tried to boot in safe mode whic none of the F Keys or Del will take me to. I tried changing the Bios to Boot from CD first using the same XP CD. I'm not sure what else I can do to get this thing to open windows, even in safe mode, or system restore. Sorry for the novel, just trying to explain in depth.

Hey, basicly my old Hard drive for some reason or another died. I got a second hand one off a friend which I beleive and he beleives to be allright. = Baracuda 7200 .6 160gb HDD IDE... Obviously when starting it gets stuck on Error loading OS.. So I restarted went into boot menu and placed CDDrive as no1 boot. Placed my XP disk in... it went through the stages: Press any key to boot.Setup is inspecting your computers hardware configuration now on the blue screen of "Press f6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver that passes by what should appear next is sposed to be a screen saying "press enter to install windows xp or R to repair," but that doesn't load up instead I am stuck with.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600. I got a new 80gb hard drive and wanted to clone it with the current 20gb drive. I took both drives and connected them to a different pc that had norton ghost on it. After cloning, which went fine, I placed them back into the Dell with the 80 gig set as master, and the 20gb set as slave. The computer would post normally and boot to a black screen with a blinking cursor, this happned right after verifying dmi data pool. It would hang at this screen never getting to the windows loading screen.
I returned the 20gb to the master drive and set the 80gb as the slave. It booted fine. After getting into windows I saw it was reporting the 80gb as C: and the 20gb as D:. I changed the drive letter of the 80gb (in safe mode) to G:. After changing it the computer would freeze at the XP splash screen, however I still had control of the mouse. I believe this was caused from windows search for the page file on C: which no longer existed............

this problem for a while now and ive been trying everything i can think off. Basically when i start the computer up the windows login screen freezes. I have to press ctrl + alt + delete to get the login box to come up, and i can login that way. That's fine just a bit annoying . Secondly, When i look through my files in windows, even click a file on desktop or browse the internet, the taskbar and my desktop will freeze. I can move my mouse, but cant click anything, icons, start menu, right click - nothing. To get it back i bring up task manager and close it, then i can click the taskbar etc, i have no idea why that works i dont close explorer.exe or anything . I've ran anti-virus scans with avast and nod32 (i only have avast installed), anti-spyware scans with Spybot and superantispyware and nothing was found. I've disabled startup programs with msconfig, defragmented and updated video card drivers. but it still freezes. Specs are beside my forum name, and im using xp home.
