I have an xp cd, and i just downloaded BARTPE onto my computer and was wondering if someone could walk me through on how to make the cd on a laptop with only one drive. I don't know if i'm doing it right.
View 14 RepliesI have XP SP2 running on a 160Gb drive that is in a Compaq nc8000 laptop.I can read the drive with an external USB drive caddy.Can read the drive with BartPE. Did a chkdsk and all is ok.Did a fixboot via the recovery console. It replaced the boot record.Checked boot.ini. All is ok.Deleted the hibernation partition from the drive.Replaced NTLDR with a known good version.Still does not work.
View 14 Replies View RelatedStrange occurance on a machine today. There was nothing wrong with the rig running XP Pro. I was testing a BartPE bootdisk with WiFi drivers for the specific card that was on the computer. Boots up PE no prob, no joy on the NIC though, but thats not the issue. I'll fix that later.When I exited PE and restarted the machine the boot.ini had been modified. It now showed 3 instances of Windows XP (which where non existent) and when I booted into windows it had re-enabled ALL the startup programs (all but a few where disabled through msconfig) and even some previously disabled Services had been restarted. Everything else was fine, it took a bit of work to change it all back and correct the boot.ini file, but just wondering if anyone know WHY this would have happened. I cant think of anything in the PE boot that would have done that

I had Windows Live Update on, and it was downloading and installing Service Pack 3.
But almost at the end, the download got cut off on its own, even though my internet connection was still on, and the laptop froze. So i restarted it, and although now it says i have service pack 3, i seem to be having problems.
It doesn't install itself on startup, it only tries to installs, then it says i have an error somewhere.
I tried downloading it manually from both microsoft.com and from another website, it's a 316MB file, using Download Accelerator Plus. Both time it would reach to the end, tells me its 100%, but keeps downloading as if nothing happened. I end up reading: "325MB of 316MB" and stuff like that.
When installing a larger main drive, how do I get the drivers copied onto the slave before I take out the main one I wonder is there a simple way of doing this, I am using Windows XP home edition, the PC is an oldish one and isn't any specific make, so I can't get any clever programs from the manufacturers site
View 3 Replies View RelatedRecently I became devoted to taking care of my computer by installing Anti-virus, spyware removers, and backup/performance utilties. Well I came across BartPE and it's features. Well I decided to use it and have the Rescue CD just incase. Doesn't hurt right? Plus the idea of it seems very helpful if I ever need a virtual Windows XP. I continued with the instructions and all was well until I got errors and warnings.
I posted the log here. I have no clue on what to do next. I used the CD that came with my Dell Dimension E521. I use Windows XP Media Center 2005.
I used at work, BartPE burned CD and a formatted USB thumbdrive (which I did not create) to boot my CPU's and it installed an "image" of windows XP onto the drive using Norton Ghost and everything thing moves great.I have read that most imaging software can be used to do this with BartPE. What I have not figured out yet though is how and where you put the image in BartPE when you do the "build" and then make it start ghost or the 'image' upon bootup in the cpu.
right now i have successfully created the BartPE CD and "thought" i had used the CMD to format C: drive then told it where to install the files from BARTPE to C: drive, which did not work ( i dont guess) for the computer now starts up into the BartPE without the CD rom now, but NO

I have just finished a major rescue operation after my motherboard failed. I'm using Windows XP Home. Everything appears to be OK - except, having downloaded Spybot, when I try to run it, I get this message "There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a disc into drive DeviceHarddisk 1DR2". It doesn't matter which of the buttons I then click, nothing happens, and the only way I can get rid of it is to reboot the system. I had the same problem last May, although the context was different. I seem to remember that the only way I could fix the problem was to rename the virtual drive "c:" as "b:". Question - would that work? If so, how do you rename virtual drives, my memory isn't what it was, and I foolishly didn't write the process down.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to replace a failinf IDE drive with a SATA replacement. How do I make it bootable? I am using an ABIT VA-10 mobo, Win XP SP3, 1.5 GB DDR333 Ram, and a mix n' match collection of IDE and SATA HDD's?
I cannot seem to get the mobo to recognize the SATA which is plugged into the primary IDE slot via a Silicon Graphics 680 adapter board. This of course fouls up my ability to boot from a CDROM drive as my secondary IDE port is supporting the original WD IDE drive and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA drive. At one point I was able to boot from either the primary master or the 2nd master. I have fiddled with XXclone and cannot seem to get the machine to recognize the Sata drive any more.
I recently got a new computer with windows XP and I want to make a backup copy of my hard drive. I've been using win 98se in the past and always backed up my drive using the "Drive Copy" software and that always worked just fine. I tried using it to copy my new Win XP drive and found that it has a different format called NTFS. My Drive Copy doesn't seem to work with the new drive. Any suggestions? Do I need to reformat the new blank drive I want to copy to?

Instead of burning as disc images, I just copied and pasted these 4 CDs to my USB HDD as 4 folders called "RecoveryCD 1", "RecoveryCD 2", "RecoveryCD 3" and "RecoveryCD 4". Now my laptop got problem and I lost my 4 recovery CDs. All I have now is 4 recovery folders in my USB HDD. I burned another 4 CDs as data disc from my USB HDD, but it didn't work out (it didn't boot because they are just data discs). I again burned my first recovery CD as a bootable CD, and it booted but didn't automatically install XP, drivers and other softwares. It just appeared some sentences on a black screen and cursor is waiting for me to type after the text, "A:>".

I just plugged it in, via USB, and it put a drive letter in Windows Explorer (WE) and I could access it like any other drive. It was easy. My question is: if I get another external HD, can I use it along with my current external HD? That is, can I use the new external HD without unplugging my present external HD.

I think the HDD I have now is dying, and I would like to have a hard drive I can just pop in which has all the information I have now. I have heard horror stories about Norton Ghost, so I'm hesitant there. I also bought a product called Drivecopy...BEFORE I learned that it is not compatible with XP Pro. Ghost and Drivecopy are both PowerQuest products. I have been told that if you simply copy one drive to another it will not be bootable because of some hidden/missing files that Windows uses. I have also heard that most products which are SUPPOSED to do what I want will only work on drives the exact same size and will duplicate my smaller partition if I go to a larger drive. There MUST be an easy way, but I'm stumped.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having a hard time formating my system. I recently got virus that was so bad i couldn't access my desktop, so i am now formating my hard drive. I go through the process of a clean install and i make the partition I hit quick ntfs and it goes on fine until it restarts the computer. All it does is it either loads up on the cd or it hangs on a - mark on a black background, and later tells me non system disk or disk error replace and strike any key when ready. I'm wondering if jumper settings may have something to do with this or if the hard drive is screwed up.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I bought my new pc with XP SP2 I added a second hard drive(FAT 32) that I'd already used for a while in my old pc, and that contains all my data, photo's, music etc. Everything worked fine, but over the past month something strange is happening. From one moment to the other Windows loses sight of that second drive. Sometimes restarting (in every possible way) helps, sometimes not. Sometimes the drive disappears when I'm saving omething to it, sometimes I can save.

I've created the bootable thumb drive, and I've messed with the [menu] commands and such, but I can't get it to work. Is there a way to make a simple boot option to say, use this config.sys and this autoexec.bat?
