After running a program called System Mechanic from Iolo technologies I discovered my computer had stopped working properly and kept telling me that files essential to the smooth running of windows had been changed. I did a system restore operation and almost everything went back to normal. The only exception is my desktop icons, and icons on the quick lanch bar. They're appearing inside white squares and not against the desktop wallpaper like they should almost as if the wallpaper has not loaded properly under the

Internet Blocks (most) Of The Programs?
Jun 13, 2005Do you have any clue why only some of my programs can access the internet? I do not use a firewall, nor a router.I use Windows XP Home Edition. However, for some reason, Windows (or something) just BLOCKS most of my programs. I have tried many things, and still, nothing has worked.

Jan 1, 2007i have a problem with windows whenever i try to search a folder. i type in what i'm looking for but when i hit enter the page shows the standard "page cannot be found". at the top it says that interent explorer has restricted content that could access my computer. this is obviously a load of crap because all i'm trying to do is use the search function. it's not just when i try to search that it happens, it also happens when i try to get to "my network places" using the locations found at the side of the screen when i'm in my computer.

I was out of town all week; however, while using our PC Mon evening, a loud clunk noise from the tower; the screen went black; and when the screen came back up, everything was stretched out horizontally and concave.
Hubby tried booting it up it did come up with the image all broken into blocks and stretched horizontally and concave.
Installer Going Bonkers - Blocks Incoming Emails
Dec 28, 2007I have a Windows Installer splash screen that pops up upon a reboot and which flickers thereafter. It doesn't install anything, and I can't kill it by canceling it while it appears. It blocks incoming emails, (they hang up at 50% downloading) although sometimes when I reboot the problem doesn't start again for an hour or so. It's sporadic, but it never goes completely away. I thought I had found the solution on this thread here: , but installing the downloads didn't solve the problem. I have no idea what Windows Installer is trying to install. To make things more interesting, Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel only shows very recent software. And System Restore fails for anything more than about a week ago, when the problem first manifested itself. I've purchased and downloaded RegCure, Fix-it Utilities 8 Professional, and CounterSpy. Ive run AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Spyware Blaster. While my registry is clean, no malware found, and my computer is running faster, all these were of no help in getting rid of this popup.
When I reboot, which I often have to do out of the Windows Task Manager because the popup is flickering too fast to do it out of the Start Menu, I usually get an error message saying that ccApp can't be closed. It reboots anyway, and sometimes I get back into a reasonably manageable system, and sometimes I don't.It don't know if the problem is related to Norton 360, but the Icon in the systray blinks when the installer is really going ballistic. I would try to uninstall and reinstall Norton, but it's not listed in my Add/Remove Programs list anymore, along with most of my other programs.
Cleaning The Inside Of Pc
Nov 25, 2006Dusting out the entire inside of my pc. i noticed that the fan that cools my pc is full of dust, will removing the small fan covering the cpu cause any problems. like cuasing me to do a clean install because i removed the cpu? i just want my Computer clean and free of all the dust.
If i were to remove the CPU to dust it and put it back , would it be like any other hardware, i.e. the memory where i can just remove it and put it back with no further actions to take, or is it way different?
Bad Blocks On Hard Drive - Download Check Disk

Sep 25, 2006Under OS win98se regarding winXPpro windows folder.Online virus scan says there is two adware programs, WUpd & Maxifiles under windowsDownloaded program files. Thing is though when I go into the folder I see five files totaling 192k in size with names like "java run time environment 1.5.0" But when I go outside of the folder and click on properties it tells me there are 22 files in there totalling 22.2mb in there. Whats up with this? I have "show all files" enabled under hidden folders. Why can't I see these files?

I have an older computer, an AMD FX53 processor with 3gb ram, a Geforce 6800 Ultra on an AGP bus, and two 160gb hard drives running Raid 0, using Win XP home (OEM), SP2.
I recently replaced Norton Antivirus 2006 with Norton 360 on this older unit.
The first problem:
My wife ran into an error when booting up. The unit booted up to the screen where I see the Microsoft logo, and the horizontal progress bar...then the screen goes dark for maybe 30 seconds, and a blue screen comes up. The message

flies by, and the unit reboots. Continuously.

The second problem:
My wife tried to fix it by going into Setup. She said it had been happening once in a while, and she got past the problem by pressing ALT+F8, but it finally would not take that. So she got into Setup, and somehow ended up in the Set Up Password area. She got out of that by setting a password to enter Setup. She did not record the new password correctly.
So, I can't get into Setup to reset the unit to allow me to boot from the CD, so I can try my recovery disk (OEM version of Win XP.)

I note another thread mentioning a problem like this called "New HD Needed" and a reply mentioning the use of www.ultimatebootcd.com to diagnose the problem.
I am not sure I understand the phrase "burning the iso" but I assume I can go to the site, download a file and burn it to disc? My new unit runs Win Vista HomePremium. I'll try to get that file and get it burned to disc using what comes with Vista.
But, is the Raid 0 arrangement on that old unit going to muck things up? And how do I get past the password protection on Setup to reset to boot from CD first? (Boots straight from hard drive presently.)

Apr 30, 2007I mistakenly copied the XP Favorites Folder within in itself twice. Now when you go to C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersFavorites you see two more Favorites Folders inside the original.When trying to delete the extra two Favorites Folders we get an error message Favorites is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It cannot be deleted.Is there a way to delete these two unnecessary Favorites Folders within the original?
