Windows Xp Re-installatioin / Preserve Second Hard Drive Data And 2nd Boot Windows Xp?

Jan 1, 2008

I want to install a new primary hard drive and reinstall windows xp from scratch on the new c: drive. For the moment I would also like to retain the old disc contents and the xp operating system. To try to do this I installed a second hard drive and cloned the old drive c: to the new drive f:. I created a dual boot computer by editing my boot.ini file so I could boot from either the c: or f: drive. I replaced my primary hard drive with a new drive and booted up in the f: drive. Then I cloned the f: drive back to the new c: drive creating a dual boot system. My concern now is that if I reinstall windows xp on the newly installed hard drive, the Dell installation disk will wipe out the operating system and the contents on the f: drive. Is there any way to retain the old system? I'd appreciate any help with this.

Cannot Delete Folder From Separate Hard Drive

Dec 18, 2008

I have tried without success to delete a folder from my separate hard drive which I beleive is corrupted in some way. I have copied it elsewhere and it runs fine. I have deleted all the individual files (jpgs) and the details show no files remaining. However I get an error message which tells me I cannot delete the folder as the the directory is not empty. I have tried chdsk and to show hidden files with the Tools command but without success. Any ideas? The folder seems to make my hard drive whir and run very slowly hence my desire to get rid of it. I am running Windows XP with SP2 but mt computer skills are limited!

Disk Cleanup Wants To Delete Hard Drive

Dec 30, 2005

Wow, this is kind of odd I ran disk cleanup and noticed that the size of the temporary files it wants to delete totals about 56 GBs, which is pretty much everything on my HD.It did this once before, only it just deleted Windows, which is pretty ironic.I've tried running chkdsk with the r parameter, and it found nothing, so I'm not sure exactly what to do with a Windows-specific issue like this, especially seeing as I have no restore points other than the latest one, which was just before I found this all out. Reformatting is NOT an option.

Delete Partition On External Hard Drive

Jun 2, 2004

I copied my data files to my external Maxtor hard disk before I tried to reformat my internal hard drive and reload Win XP. However during my partition, I didn't realize I still had the external drive (160GB) plugged in and it showed up at the top of the list and the original internal (80GB) below it. So, I followed the instruction mistakenly and went through the process of deleting the partition(on the external hard drive) and tried to partition it into two drives. Then I got an error message as I continue to try to format the hard drive "Your computer's startup program cannot gain access to the disk containing the partition or free free space you choose . Set up cannot install Window XP on this hard disk." I stopped, reboot and tried to go through the delete partition several times with the same error message. After several attempts, I realized that the external hard drive was still plugged in.

So I unplugged the external hard drive and reboot to go through the process of reformatting and partition the internal hard drive into C drive and E drive and loaded Win XP. Now even though I plugged in the hard. After I installed the external hard drive's
software, driver and restarted the computer, I connected the external hard drive and don't see the drive in my computer. I could find it under Control Panel/System/Device Manager/Disk drives but it doesn't show up as an external hard drive under "My computer" with a drive letter. Under the disk management, I see the drive as Disk1 but it was unallocated. Did I lose all my data due to the delete of partition? Can I recover my data and drive ?

Sure Delete Fills Hard Drive With 300 Gigs

Oct 10, 2008

I've heard a lot of good things about Sure Delete, which is used to delete files from your computer permanently (I'm really paranoid about identity theft). When I used it, I just expected it to clear these deleted files from my system so they couldn't be brought back, but what actually happened was much different. I came back to my computer to find that my 400 gigabyte hard drive that was originally less than 90 gigabytes full now has 397 gigabytes used and runs at an astoundingly slow speed. The readme for the program claims that if such a case occurs to delete the sdel.tmp files in the directory cleared, which in my case was C:. Unfortunately, they don't exist there, or anywhere else. I've done over 15 full system scans, used the Windows XP Disk Cleanup tool 3 times, as well as 2 3rd-party disk cleaners, attempted a System Restore (Which didn't work), tried to email the makers of Sure Delete (Which returned an error every time), re-ran the program twice, and uninstalled the program, restarted my computer, and checked again. Nothing has done anything. If you wanna check out Sure Delete,

Get Data From Second Hard Drive After Reformatting Windows On Other?

Sep 15, 2009

I have two hard drives(40 GB & 160GB both internal) installed in my system. Earlier I had installed windows XP on the first hard drive (40GB) and was using second hard drive as additional storage. I had partitioned my second hard drive into 5 partitions P, Q, R, S, T. Recently I reformatted my first hard drive and reinstalled windows XP. However this has also affected my second hard drive. Now Windows shows only two drives C: (my first hard drive) and D: (second hard drive) as only one partition each. Moreover it is not showing any data on the second hard drive. I want to get back my parition info and data on the second hard drive. I thought that formatting my first drive will not affect second drive and therefore didn't take back up of the second drive. What shall I do to get back my data and partition info.

Can't Install Windows On SATA Hard Drive

Mar 11, 2009

My old IDE hard drive went out on me so i went and bought a 500g WD SATA hard drive. When I put the windows installation disk in it does not recognize my SATA hard drive. after looking into it online, i found that alot of people had this issue. I read a few suggestions and tried them, (using the F6 function during install with drivers on a floppy disk, and streamlining drivers intot he windows installation disk itself using NLite), and none of them seem to work. I then used my friends old IDE hard drive, installed windows, and used a program to make a disk image of my hard drive and transfer it to my SATA drive. This didnt work either. I havn't fiddled with drive letters, (you know c: and e: and so on) i am thinking this may help but I am not sure. It is not a boot order issue i know how to do all that and nothing works. I am looking for a way to get Windows XP onto my SATA drive. (yes my mother board detects my SATA drive, and it is showing up in windows i just cant seem to get windows on it.)

I would prefer to just copy it from my IDE drive since i have already installed all the updates so if this is possible please let me know.If you know what kind of boot disk i need for windows xp installation to recognize my sata drive during installation that would be a big help too. (i have tried sata controller drivers for my motherboard, i tried using the software that came with my hard drive, and this too didn't work.)

Windows And Sonic Keep Saying My Hard Drive Is Full

Feb 7, 2010

Hi. My problem is similar to this one here
http://forums.cnet.com/5208-12546_102-0.html?threadID=295044
Except I am not running Vista and don't have AOL on there.
Also, I don't think my drive is actually full, or if it is, it's because of something that Sonic or Windows did.

I have a bunch of computers. This Dell laptop, Inspiron E1505, is one I primarily use to watch DVD's or online shows. There were a lot of programs installed, because I used to use it regularly, and then I loaned it to someone for about a year. It had very few files in terms of documents, pictures, music, or videos, because I had cleaned all that out before I loaned it to her, and I got a new laptop, and so only use this one to watch DVD's. Also, I should mention it has a fairly new DVD recorder because the old one died a few months back.

Sometimes I use this laptop to burn or copy disks, which is what I have been doing the past two days, using the program Sonic Digital Media LE v7, which came preinstalled. It was working fine copying dvd's (legal copies of ones I recorded myself) until yesterday, when it suddenly said that my hard drive was full and to free up "0 kb" in order to proceed.

When I close the program after this error, it gives me three crash messages (every time).

First one says MediaHub.exe application error.
The instruction at "0x0035afd0" reference memory at "0x35171ae8". The memory could not be "written". Click on OK to terminate the program."

The next error is almost exactly the same but gives all the numbers as 0x00000000.

The third error is Microsoft Visual C++ RUntime Library Runtime Error! program: mediahub.exe
R6025 - pure virtual function call.

At first, rebooting helped this problem, but then I got the error again. So I ran disk cleanup. It took a really long time and then the pc turned itself off. I turned it back on and it said that the pc had overheated because the fan vents were blocked. The vent is on the bottom, and was very dirty (possibly because my friend was a heavy smoker), so I wiped it off with a damp napkin. I rebooted and ran disk cleanup again. I was able to copy disks again until it gave me the error again. Every time I go to the C drive and check the disk free space, it gives me very little there, but I know that it's not because of any files I have on there.

Anyway, I also uninstalled all of the unimportant programs and deleted any extra files I could find. I want to run check disk, but I got an error message and it said it would run it next time I rebooted (that didn't help and check disk still didn't run, and still wouldn't run next time I tried it). I tried to run disk defragmenter, but it said I only had 5% hard drive space left and it needs 15%. I ran it anyway, and it seemed to work, and I was able to copy more disks.

Now I am getting that error message again.

I am running disk cleanup again, compressing old files, so we'll see if that works. I haven't tried System Restore yet, will try that one next. I really would rather not reinstall Windows.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Suzanne Lanoue

Extra Drive Letters

Nov 12, 2006

I'm running xp, and my c drive has now become c,f and g.when checking in disk management, there are no volume labels assigned. In Disk 0, it shows the three partitions (I've no clue why there are 3, is that standard?)39 MB FAT, 69.81 GB NTFS, and 4.64 GB FAT32.This happened after a failed software install that dell refused to help with (there's a shocker)It's just an annoyance, nothing more, but I would like to get it back to being just the c drive without risking losing anything in the process. Something I can do safely or just live with it?

Hard Drive And CD Burner Found By BIOS But Not Windows

Aug 30, 2005

I recently got myself another hard drive, that I wanted to install in my computer. From before, the computer contained a hard drive and a CD-burner. I do not have instructions on how to set the jumpers on the new hard drive to make it master or slave, so I had to try my way. I figured how to make it master, so the present configuration is that this new hard drive is secondary master, and the CD-burner is secondary slave. BIOS recognizes this, but unfortunately Windows does not seem to find any of the devices on the secondary controller with this configuration.

Booting A Windows Installation From An External Hard Drive

Jun 9, 2008

I have an external hard drive (150GB) which is partitioned into two parts. One partition , about 145gb, is data and files of my own. Then there is an extended partition at 5gb in size, which contains windows xp installation files. What I did was take my windows xp cd, make an ISO, and then extracted the iso and put the files into the extended partition of my external usb hard drive. The computer I want to install to has a cd drive that is not working and thus i cannot install windows xp from a cd. The BIOS of the computer DOES support booting from a USB device.I have partition magic software and have used it to create the 5gb extended partition on the usb external drive. However, I don't know how to configure anything so that it will acutally know to boot from this partition and what files to use to start the installation.
