im on my friends computer now and it has some kind of problem. When i turn it on all it shows is
PRESS F2 for BIOS
PRESS F10 ..
and then if you dont press either one it will go and then a black screen will show up with just a Underscore blinking
Just got a new computer with Gigabyte GA-K8SNC-939 Motherboard. The problem is that on each boot , and shutdown, the floppy drive is accessed (i.e. motor runs ).The floppy drive is NOT selected as a boot option in the bios and the access on boot comes just after the 'Loading Personal Settings" screen. On shutdown it is just before the end , not immediately on shutdown.I seem to remember there was a Floppy Seek setting somewhere in Windows at one time, but I can't seem to find it in XP SP 2. As it happens well into the boot cycle, I don't think it's related to the motherboard.
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I turn on my computer, it does the bios check, then goes into the bios screen on its own. I have checked all of the bios settings, and see nothing set wrong. The only way I can get itno my xp pro system, is to use "F8" during the bios check, the select my hd from there, then it seems only half of my programs work, and it also seems to be randomly changing the programs that do not work, when I do this.

I am sure that the bios have been affected and attempts to boot from either a floppy or cd get ignored in the loading process and the bios canot find the module to activate the periferal devices ie: keyboard, mouse, usb ports. View 8 Replies View Relatedrecently my computer has been doing some very strange things. occasionally i get a box popping up saying that something has been terminated unexpectedly and the computer will shutdown in 60 seconds, but this is quite rare.
the main problems are having unusual crashes and moments where the computer acts like the monitor cable has been unplugged and then plugged back in. also i am having internet connection issues much more frequently than before, and sometimes my computer just slows down to snail pace or the mouse hangs every few seconds for no apparent reason.
i have searched through my task manager processes and cannot find anything there out of the ordinary. i have tried to run Ad-aware and Spybot but the programs both crash when they try to update, the same thing also happens with AVG antivirus, the computer refuses to let these apps access the internet connection. I do have Sygate Personal Firewall installed and usually it would run at startup but now there is no longer the icon in the system tray, and when I try to boot it up from start menu it too refuses to load. however the process 'Smc.exe' which I understand is part of Sygate Personal Firewall is still running.
As for system specs, I have:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1 gig ram
Geforce 6600 GT AGP
Soundblaster Audigy 2
ASUS motherboard
Windows XP Professional SP1
PS- I did have an idea why the spyware/adware/AV programs won't update, since recently my Sygate Personal Firewall seemed to forget which programs were 'allowed' or 'blocked', and I haven't run any of these programs since then. Now that I cannot access SPF to tell it to allow these programs that could be the reason they won't update. I am still at a loss as to why SPF/AVG do not load up on startup as they used to however.
When I turn on the computer, I get a screen with functions Esc, F2 and F11. I can not select any of these functions
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy PC has been having problems starting.when I switch the computer on is that the screen will flash haphazardly for several seconds (several vertical thin coloured lines) and then go completely blank. I have to press the CPU switch on and off for close to a dozen times before finally the computer will start up properly. A message will then show saying Windows has not successfully started because of (I quote) a "recent hardware or software problem". This morning, an additional message came up and the system went on to perform a disk test. I have a lot of data stored so total system recovery is preferably not an option. Please can someone help & tell me what I need to do???! I am on XP and have a Compaq Presario 6150 desktop.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have Windows XP Professional with SP2. I have 1 GB of RAM and a Pentium 4 running at 2.81 GHz. Things were working AOK until I ran several anti-virus programs being Registry Mechanic, SpyBot, Ad-Aware SE, PestPatrol, & a trial version of Webroot Spy Sweeper. I seemed to start having printing problems (Epson Stylus Photo RX600) after running those. Documents start to print, but only print the first line or two of the document and in color and black and sometimes "garbage" and then it scrolls through and starts on another sheet of paper and so on and so forth. It doesn't stop, so I access my printer monitor and tell it to cancel all documents. Well, it takes forever to do that and so I shut off the printer and then everything seemed to stop printing. The next time I try to print something, I get the same problem. I even downloaded updated Epson printer software from the Epson site and installed it after deleting my old Epson printer software
View 3 Replies View Relatedso my Radeon Sapphire X1600 Pro (256MB) crapped out on me mainly the video feed. So I purchased a new one didn't really look at it very well but its a Geforce 7300GT 512MB and when I install the latest drivers and promptly restart the computer it freezes on the Windows is now loading screen.
Now I have 1 guess as towhy its doing this is insufficient RAM but I'm not sure.
computer has been acting strange, when ever she types anything, another character will automatically be put after the one you type. Even with the space bar if you press it it will do the space and add an e after it, and if you press tab it puts a 4 after about 3 spaces... And if you do a question mark it will do a capital R and just really random things, I've done MS Anti spyware scans, ad-aware scans, spybot scans, everythink, but nothing finds anything wrong... Is it the keyboard playing up or something else?

Now she is using Windows XP Home Ed., a message comes up: "It is now safe to turn off your computer" How can we get rid of that message so that the computer will shut down completely again by itself like it used to?
Is there a setting that we can change somewhere please?She would like to be able to use Start/Shut Down and the computer would shut completely down without any furhter steps.
When I open my "My Computer" folder, it displays my computer contents just like any other folder on my pc... it doesn't break my icons up into groups. I can post a screenshot if you can't understand what I mean. Here's the really weird thing. If I login under my personal account, I have this problem. However, if I log off my account and log back in under the Administrator account, the "My Computer" folder displays properly, without anything wrong.
I am running XP at this time. XP Media Center Edition to be exact. My computer is fairly new, only purchased in July of last year. It is a Dell with a 3GHz processor and 4GB of RAM if that matters.
once the on button was pushed, it came up with the BIOS screen asking for the password.I removed the CMOS battery, which allowed me to change the Password so I can get onto BIOS now. However, when I boot now it just comes up with the BIOS screen.I set HD to boot first, aswell as setting the clock and date. I then ask it to save and quit, after which it shut's down, and reboots, only, BIOS keeps coming up. And I need to get this sorted asap

I was away from home for about a week and left the machine plugged into the mains but powered down. When I returned home to boot up, it kept doing things like constantly hanging on parts of the bios POST screen, eventually booting up after thirty or so complete restarts. It finally booted into windows but after the last shutting down, it will now not boot up at all. I have replaced the bios battery and reset the bios several times.
View 5 Replies View Relatedmy computer was running totally fine until i was converting some videos with itunes for my itouch and then the itunes froze the comp. it did the freeze i restarted the computer but ...nothing. i can't even get into the bios screen! everything powers up fine so i know its not the psu. I've tried removing extra hdds and starting with just the main hdd and removing all peripherals except monitor but still nothing. there is no resposnse form the hdd after initial power up. i noticed that the activitiy light remains dead after the initial power up. i hear the hdds spinning but nothing is happening. i dont understand why it wont even go into bios screen...i can see and hear the cpu and vid card fans spinning so i know they are getting power

Well in doing resurch for a freind in trying to understand the process of overclocking and sheer curiosty to see what my system would be able to push alittle harder i found my way in my bios and desided reluctently to play around with it some to see if i could get my medocer pc to push alittle harder than what it is set for and well i saved and almost immeditly my screen went blank and every time i try to restart my computer, there is nothing being emulated by my screen even thought the montier is in prime shape. aghh so how badly should i kick my own tush and what should i do to repair what i have broken???!?

Recently noticed that when I left-click on any of the icons of the Hard-disk drives and/or Devices with Removable Storage within 'My Computer', the 'Search' Option opens up by default instead of the 'Open' option, like in other folders. Likewise, when I right-click on the said icons, the 'Search' option is topmost & the 'Open' option has been relegated to second position. I would like the Search option to come first. Can't remember whether this was so from before or changed recently.
I have used Norton Partition Magic 8 recently to resize my partitions.
Whenever i start my computer, all i can see is my background. i tried ctrl+alt+delete and that pops up, but nothing else happens. after about ten minutes, it finally reaches the desktop stage. its a 2005 compaq presario with an added wireless adapter card and extra RAM.
View 6 Replies View Relatedi got a new computer and gave my emachines T2885 Windows XP to my brother it was running great until he decided to wipe out the computer which i have done in the past with the system recovery disks that came with it and when he did this about half way thru the recovery we get a ghost.err now it won't even boot up. i have taken it to 2 gentlemen who both charged me and didn't do anything to it but 1 guy gave me a win crash cd and told me that i could get the computer back up and running with this cd. well i have no idea how to use this disk but he charged me 100.00 dollars anyway said he just didn't have the time to fix it that the disk is all i needed. well i am broke for this and still no fix for this computer.

View 14 Replies View RelatedGot a bit of a problem with my housemates pc.A friend gave him some extra RAM, i checked it out and it was crucial 512mb pc2100 CL2.5, and although it didn't match his exsisting RAM it seemed to me that his mobo would only run the FSB at 200mhz anyway so i went ahead and fitted it.It worked fine I then noticed his system temp was running a little high (60-65 degrees), so i took his heatsink off and cleaned the dust and refitted it with some new thermal compound.I added too much and the temp went up. To nearly 90 degrees.I shut it dwon as i didn't want the cpu to pop, cleaned it off, reapplied less compound and figured this would work fine.Now we have the problem. Most of the time: Power on and nothing happens. No bios, no beeps. Occasionally: Power on, i jump into the bios, the temp looks fine (30-40 degrees) and then it freezes right there in the bios after about 30 seconds to a minute.This sounds like a heat issue, but the last temp reading before freeze is 33 degrees.?I've double and triple checked that the heatsink is on properly and thats fine. I followed the official guide on how much compound to use (a blob the size of an uncooked short grain of rice).

I tried to update my BIOS on my Acer AOA150 Netbook (I know, terrible idea, I wanted it to be updated in case I used a 9 cell battery). I downloaded the BIOS, version 3310, from http://global-download.acer.com/GDFi...&LC=en&SC=PA_7
I clicked on one of the readme files and it said to click on one of the executable files included in the download and to then click "sure." Once I clicked sure, my computer immediately shut down. I tried to turn it on after only about 5 seconds. It simply will not start up completely but I *can* get to the F2 screen. If I choose not to go with the F2 option, the normal Windows XP flashing image will come up, except it flashes slightly slower than normal. Then, right before the screen can display my various accounts to start windows, the netbook completely shuts off. This is an Acer AOA 150 model netbook. I downloaded the BIOS.
I may have tried to turn it on while the computer was still trying to flash the BIOS. Or, I just messed up from the start by trying to do it from Windows.
In short, I screwed up the c:/windows folder, computer starts but screen stays black, bios screen doesn't show up. Everything is connected.
Using xp home. Computer was purchased in 2004. Fairly nice computer for it's age, would like to restore it back to working condition. For a detailed description of the events leading to what happened read below. Any questions, post and I'll answer, I'll be checking back every 10-30 min. I figure it is the hard drive but who knows.
Im building this computer and now that I have all the pices Im trying to get it working. My problem is I cant get the bios set up right. I never had to do this befor so I dont really know what to do.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo my computer wasnt running the best so i figured maybe I should update my drivers. So I went to the Msi.com.tw website and got to the Live Update Online. I let it update and do what it had to and then I saw this BIOS/Firmware update or something like that so i deceided to do it. I didnt read the Important note posted on the page before i clicked "Yes I would like to try and my own risk" Button. heres what it states.
Important! In order to flash the BIOS/Firmware safely, please make sure to close all running applications in your system before flashing. (Including Outlook, ICQ, Anti-Virus application, etc�)
So Yea. I didnt read that. and After I let it do that and give me and error half way through I think. But anyways I had remebered I had left Norton antivirus on. So now whenever I go back to the Msi.com.tw site and click that try at own risk button.. it restarts my computer now. My fans have sped up and make more noises. not to mention it did ask me if i wanted to backup bios on a floppy. and well... when i Build this computer. I wasnt so smart about buying one of those to put in.. I forgot all about it. So no backup on floppy disc. Now My question for you is How do I fix this? Get a new PSU? I mean it sounds with my ears like it is just dieing after I did that. and I read somewheres it does something to your PSU and restarting. Or is there a alternative way to load my old bios back to normal? Please help. This is killing me. My mom bought me a new graphics card for Xmas and i wanna use it but not til my computers better.
