Screen Where You Can Change The Boot Order
Oct 26, 2007I am receiving the error message about missing or corrupt file and have seen many "fixes" posted on the web. But my trouble is a little different. I have the XP install DVD and when I put it in the computer and start it up it doesn't do anything different, i have tried to change the boot setup (F12 i think upon startup) and try to prioritize it to the number one spot, but it doesn't save the change (although it does look like the drive light is on during startup. I can't boot it up in Safe Mode or any of the options that appear on that screen. Everything I try takes me back to the black screen that says something along the lines of insert the original install disk and press R to go to the restore menu. I cant' get the thing to boot from the DVD. To note - on the screen where you can change the boot order, it doesn't say DVD drive it says CD but the drive came with the computer.

Nov 5, 2007I have a HP ze5568cl laptop (Windows XP SP2). For a few years we've had trouble with the power connector. We've just wiggled the power cable to keep it connected and lived with the problem. It also gets very hot and the fan runs constantly. Yesterday when I powered it on there was no power, absolutely nothing. My husband has some electronic knowledge so we took the laptop apart and he soldered the loose part of the power connector. While he was doing that I cleaned the fan (couldn't believe how much dust was in there.When we plugged in the power cable the orange light came on so we were excited. When we powered it on all the keyboard lights lit up so we thought we had fixed the problem but.that's all it did. It went no further except that the fan kicked on.There is a clicking noise coming from the cd drive about every second with the green light flashing. I suppose it is checking to see if there is a bootable cd in the cd drive. I have attempted to change the boot order by holding F1, then F2 but it still continues to try to read the cd drive. I can't get to the screen that will allow me to change the boot order.
I also put the OS disk in the cd drive, hoping that it would start with the disk but it just clicks. Hubby removed the cover of the cd drive and I could see that the cd is spinning.There were no problems with this laptop prior to the power problem. It was really working very well especially considering the age of it.
The information in my sig is not for the computer with the problem. It's actually for an old computer which my son now has at college.
Screen Resolution Won't Change But Screen Size Does
Jul 23, 2005I just reformatted my computer a Dell, Inspiron 8100, Windows XP home edition. Screen resolution default is 1600X1200 Pixels. I like 1024X768. When I change the resolution to 1024X768 or any other setting available the screen just gets smaller. There is no change in "Screen Resolution.
I have installed all the updates and SP2. Auto-updates seems to be doing fine. I downloaded new NiNida drivers from Dell, etc. I've removed and reinstalled the video drivers several times.
Black Screen After Boot Screen, No Welcome Screen, No Logon Screen
Oct 28, 2008its my previously-formatted HP Pavilion dv5201tx! The problem is as the title above. I can go into safe mode. I've used system restore twice. And in Documents and Settings folder I noticed it has:
Administrator
Administrator.computer description name
Administrator.computer description name.000
username1
username2
Is it creating more user folders? At some point Administrator.computer description name.000 wasn't there. Corrupted registry hive? I'm not sure! Restarted many times, used Last known good configuration, and it's still black after the boot screen. Please help!
Can't Change Boot Sequence
Nov 24, 2008Need to re-boot with CD to get to recovery console, and when I get to the boot menu CD/CD-ROM is in the # 3 spot and I can't get it to move to the # 1 spot. when I get to the boot menu, all I'm able to do is move the curser up/down to highlight the 3 choices but not change the sequence. Now i can't change the boot sequence.

I logged on as admin and has done this before with this machine but now nothing happens my feeling is she has some kind of virus or somthing as her machine is quite slow but the anti virus program is not respondind neither is the restore option and im sure other programs

So far I have not found it anywhere and I have searched and I have tried to scour the setup options by pressing F1 right from the beginning. I am trying to load in a new OS, but if I cannot get it to boot off of the A,D, and then C, then it won't work. How to change the boot sequence in one of these IBM computers?

Jul 30, 2005I used partition magic 8 to essentially resize a partition (smaller) and add a new partition. The system rebooted after a reboot request. then when it restarted, it asked to reboot again. I said Ok, no problem. Then when it rebooted again, when trying to start up , it went to a black screen that said "windowssystem32configsystem is currupt or missing". Im a designer, not a tech guy, but im thinking that the repartition software may not have recorded (updated partition info file?) properly, and now the system doesnt know where the windows OS is? Pleeese help - im afraid to use the repair console, and tried to reinstall windows over the current system (as a last resort) but it said it cant do that either because a certain folder did not exist. Note im on my laptop now (problem on desktop).What do you think and what can i do? Do i need to put another HD in my computer with windows on it, boot to it, and manipulate the problem ( currnt drive) with the newley added drive with windows on it? I have no idea, just a thought. I'll be happy to provide any further details. Please help me out.

Jul 2, 2006I have an old (but still very spry) AMD 850 Duron 20gHd, award Bios with XP Pro Sp1 updated to Sp2 via updates.Was reading about overclocking (which I know nothing about), and decided to change a setting in the bios to Enable," CPU temperature shut down" ?? not sure exactly what it was called but something very close to that. When I hit "Y Enter" the screen went black and that's how its been ever since. Ive tried tapping delete on start up and the XP CD but nothing .. just the black screen!Ps I've since read a number of reports referring to AMD chip temperatures being misread by bios's, sounds related maybe?

Oct 26, 2007On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.
I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.
Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.
Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

I recently had a new hard drive and more memory put in the computer. It will not boot into windows xp until I go into my setup and change the boot sequence everytime. Then it will boot into windows. The computer is about 6 years old and windows xp was an upgrade to 98. Once the computer is in windows it works just fine. Changing the bood sequence everytime is a bummer.

Oct 8, 2008The video card on this computer would just cut out from time to time, and i'd to have re-set the cable for it to work. i figured theres a loose connection, so i got another video card to replace it with, since this is a work computer.So after installing the new (actually its a used video card, ASUS v7700 TIvx, but still definitely works) video card, the computer starts up at the correct resolution, 800x600. It looks fine, but when you drag anything or scroll on a web page, the video lags. So i found the correct drivers and installed them, and rebooted.
The computer reboots in 640x480 at 4-bit color quality. when i change the resolution to 800x600 at 32-bit color quality, it just defaults back to 640x480 at 4-bit. i found that i can change the resolution to 800x600 at 4-bit, but when i try 16-bit or 32-bit quality, it just go right back to 640x480 at 4-bit.i thought maybe it was the video card, and tried to install the old one again (its a geforce 2 mx card). so i re-install it and install the correct drivers, and still the same exact thing happens, (prior to any of this, the geforce 2 mx card worked fine at 800x600 at 32-bit) i can't get it to correctly change to 800x600 at 32bit, it just keeps defaulting back to 640x480 at 4-bit.

Jun 4, 2003This is a pretty cool tweak to perform on AOL Instant Messenger. You will need Resource Hacker though. Get into ResHacker and open aimres.dll in the AIM95 folder. On the tree open GIFDATA>103>1033. You should see your current sign on graphic. I would suggest backing up this graphic in case you ever want to go change it back. Once you have another graphic edited to go in its place, open the Action menu and click on "Replace other Resourse..." Open your new graphic in the area given... Then copy in this info: Resourse Type: GIFDATAResoures Name: 103Resourse Language: 1033 Then click "Replace" and Save. Another cool thing you can do from ResHacker with aimres.dll is edit some of the dialog AIM uses. Open the dialog portion of the tree and costumize some of the messages and screens used in AIM.
