I can't get into xphome sp2 with the os disk. At this point i would just like to save my fathers mail. I have ultimate boot cd, but don't really know how to use it. Any suggestions would be great. I also have file retrieval software.
View 1 RepliesI recently re-installed an old copy (4 years) of winxp home 32 bit (after my sp2 disks were giving me trouble.) There are 3 320gb hd's and 2 36gb raptors. I actually chose to install winxp home on one of the 320's but a couple of odd (to me) things happened. First, it formatted the 320's into two partitions, 1 equal to the other. I did not notice this at the time (I was in a hurry.) My winxp pro sp2 disks never did this. Second, it installed winxp on c: as I wanted but then it has "(System)" on e: (another 320gb split in two.) I found this in the disk management section.Frankly it runs great, but there are no files to be seen on the e: drive. I back up my c: drive regularly and I am wanting to know if something will be amiss with the backup because that (System) disk is on e?I've just never seen this "(System)" disk thing before.

I'd like to do a repair install, but the only software I got from Dell will wipe out my system and restore it to it's original state. Since I've got the license for it that came with my computer, can I get an XP Home install disk somewhere I can use to do this? I'm assuming it's legal to do this - am I wrong?

I labeled it with a Sharpie, "XP for Compaq", but didn't distinguish it as Home or Pro.How can I look at the files on this disk and tell whether it is Pro or Home?

I have a HP Pavilion P3, it originally came with Windows ME, at a later date i installed an upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition. I have the original 3 disks (2 ea system recovery, and 1 application recovery), I also have the original XP Home upgrade disk with product key. I have already tried this once but it would not work-- I inserted disk 1 (hp system recovery) and booted the computer, after only a second or two the screen went blue and informed me the hard drive could not be found. I thought maybe it was because I was not using ME, so I installed the upgrade disk and booted. It began doing its thing then after loading several files it informed me of a windows error and it shut down windows.

When I reinstalled XP Home, since I bought a new motherboard, there would be files that couldn't be copied to the computer. Everytime I reinstalled it, there would be different files that would not copy.

The destination disk was brand new and I may need to return it.)But I first thought to run Chkdsk, but found that without my recovery disk (that's the one that has my XP on it, right?), only the primary drive would be checked. Tfhe notice read: "The chkdsk command with the parameters listed below is only available when you are using the Recovery Console. Also there is no right click options when I try to use them on the partitions.Check the picture attached.Probably a microsoft tech would know the answer.

The problem is that it seems at some point that some kind of update was interrupted during the process and the system will not load unless a windows xp professional edition disk is inserted to complete the update. I also cannot get it to start in safe mode. Unfortunately, I only have a home edition disk. Can I reformat XP pro with a home edition disk? If not, are there any other options?

I'm trying to share folders between two laptops set up on a home wifi workgroup. Currently, both laptops are "seeing" each other's share folders (as mapped network drives), and both laptops have full internet access I have allowed simple file sharing on the XP Pro system. I have also set the firewalls to allow access, and I'm using AVG firewall instead of Windows firewall.However, only one of the computers is allowing access to the other. The XP Pro computer can access the share folders on the XP Home computer, but not vice versa. When using the XP Home computer, I can map the shared folders on the XP Pro computer, but when I try to access them, I get denied access.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFor a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

There is NO disk in the reader. If you hit any key the computer continues to boot "normal" It isn't a big problem, but a sign of something not being right.

Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI use Windows XP Professional OS on an Intel Pentium 4 PC with 512 MB RAM. Presently I have a single disk drive of 40 MB which has been divided into three logical drives C, D and E with total sizes of 20, 10 and 10 MB respectively.
I now want to add a second disk of 80 MB capacity and would like to increase the total size of the three existing logical drives to 40 MB each.Is there a feature available in Windows XP that will permit me to do this without having to reformat the existing 40 MB disk drive ?I have certain software installed in the PC for which the setup files are not available. Reformatting the existing disk drive will result in the loss of these applications. I would also not like to add more logical drives i.e. F, G, H etc.
