Home 32 Bit - OS Disk And System Disk
Jun 17, 2008
I recently re-installed an old copy (4 years) of winxp home 32 bit (after my sp2 disks were giving me trouble.) There are 3 320gb hd's and 2 36gb raptors. I actually chose to install winxp home on one of the 320's but a couple of odd (to me) things happened. First, it formatted the 320's into two partitions, 1 equal to the other. I did not notice this at the time (I was in a hurry.) My winxp pro sp2 disks never did this. Second, it installed winxp on c: as I wanted but then it has "(System)" on e: (another 320gb split in two.) I found this in the disk management section.Frankly it runs great, but there are no files to be seen on the e: drive. I back up my c: drive regularly and I am wanting to know if something will be amiss with the backup because that (System) disk is on e?I've just never seen this "(System)" disk thing before.

For a whole month now I have carefully set up the new notebook described below after successfully, but laboriously, running a 1997 Dell PII300-SCSI 128-SDRAM Win98SE system for 8 years. I've now reached a point where I need help on several issues from some of you who are far ahead of me when it comes to running a modern system. There are no major problems so far, just some minor performance issues and a few questions in areas in which I know little or nothing.
One instance of a freeze (when running Norton Speed Disk) which turned out to be a bad cluster and was repaired by ChkDsk. One instance of stalling @ the "windows is shutting down" window (shutdown only). There have been two instances of noticeable decline in peak performance: A.) after installing Norton System Works. I immediately uninstalled Go Back, which really helped, and B.) after replacing one of the installed 256mb sticks of RAM with a 1GB stick from Crucial. I only mention this because I deliberately delayed installation until maximium system performance had been consistently sustained. [This is nothing major, just a slight delay and/or menus briefly going blank when starting some programs and a slight delay in application reaction time, which usually manifests itself at the start of sessions, and late sluggishness in long sessions] I only mention this in the event that I'm wrong and can be corrected, because I believe this must be a coincidence and not due to the hardware (unless there is a setting or something in Windows that needs changing to accommodate the additional RAM) - and the solution to regaining peak performance lies in Windows and/or Norton System Works....

My son gets the message "invalid system disk, replace the disk, then press play" , when booting up, he started getting it after inputting a picture from a "smart card" using his built in card reader. There is NO disk in the reader. If you hit any key the computer continues to boot "normal" It isn't a big problem, but a sign of something not being right.

I recently formatted my drive and am trying to reinstall my WIndows XP Pro.When I put in the CD and the PC starts up I receive a message: "Invalid System Disk. Replace the disk and then press any key"I have already changed my BIOS so that it boots from the CD first. Not sure what the problem is? prior to that error message, it states that I should "press any key to boot from CD"...when I try to push a key nothing happens. I know my keyboard works since I used it to enter the BIOS.

I recently had to move up to WinXP Home on a Compaq Presario after saying goodbye to my trusty Packard Bell running Win95a.My WinXP Home came preinstalled on the computer and I had no WinXP Home CD Disk as a backup. I contacted Compaq and they immediately sent me a set of Backup Disks in case the 'System Restore' on the computer wasn't available for one reason or the other.I have yet to put them into the computer to see what they consist of. I am not experiencing any problems and I don't want to create any by doing something I am not sure of.I am just curious is this set of disks is what I would use if I had to reinstall WinXP Home?

My dad sent my daughter a "E Machine" with XP Home. Before he sent it, he transferred all of his personal files. When I hooked it up, the screen said "Boot disk failure. Insert system disk and hit enter". The company sent us a new set of bootable CDs as we thought the problem might be in the CD.

If I want to attach second hard disk with the same configuration of master hard disk, then system doesn't show second hard disk altogether or new hard disk begin to malfunction. Such as suddenly begin to give sounds like TICK, TICK TICK. Suddenly vanishes from the 'MY COMPUTER' drives. Suddenly denies to copy paste functions. BIOS shows both SATA drives. But Win XP doesn't load or simply hangs while starting up [booting up]. It happens when I attach second SATA drive with system. If only one SATA is attached, then WIN XP boots normally.

I initially posted a question regarding the installation of SP2 about a year ago, and recently have had a reason to think once again about installing SP2.I have the disk from MS, from about a year ago, never installed.Has anything changed in SP2 since theI'm getting broadband soon and think I really need to take the plunge and install it, and was wondering if there has been any changes good or bad about it since then.I can reference my old append on what to do and how to prepare for installing it.

I'm having a Windows installer problem that is giving me fits. I've tried everything I can find on line and nothing has worked. I'd like to do a repair install, but the only software I got from Dell will wipe out my system and restore it to it's original state. Since I've got the license for it that came with my computer, can I get an XP Home install disk somewhere I can use to do this? I'm assuming it's legal to do this - am I wrong?

I ordered a replacement disk from Compaq some months back as a replacement. Of course that one went to the customer; but, I copied it. I labeled it with a Sharpie, "XP for Compaq", but didn't distinguish it as Home or Pro.How can I look at the files on this disk and tell whether it is Pro or Home?

While I wait to see if I get an answer on how I can fix my current problem, thought i would check on how I might completely relaod computer, just in case I don't get a fix. I have a HP Pavilion P3, it originally came with Windows ME, at a later date i installed an upgrade to Windows XP Home Edition. I have the original 3 disks (2 ea system recovery, and 1 application recovery), I also have the original XP Home upgrade disk with product key. I have already tried this once but it would not work-- I inserted disk 1 (hp system recovery) and booted the computer, after only a second or two the screen went blue and informed me the hard drive could not be found. I thought maybe it was because I was not using ME, so I installed the upgrade disk and booted. It began doing its thing then after loading several files it informed me of a windows error and it shut down windows.

I think that the recovery disk that come with the computer is damaged in some way. When I reinstalled XP Home, since I bought a new motherboard, there would be files that couldn't be copied to the computer. Everytime I reinstalled it, there would be different files that would not copy.

In using Ghost 2003 to make a copy of my HD, (and I tried twice) I got (both times) the message that a range of sectors (some 64 consecutive) were damaged. The destination disk was brand new and I may need to return it.)But I first thought to run Chkdsk, but found that without my recovery disk (that's the one that has my XP on it, right?), only the primary drive would be checked. Tfhe notice read: "The chkdsk command with the parameters listed below is only available when you are using the Recovery Console. The chkdsk command with different parameters is available from the command prompt.
