Boot / Reboot Hangs - Filling Up Status Bar Several Minutes

Jul 20, 2005

I have been suffering through a weird phenomenon lately. Whenever I go to IE the first time of any boot or reboot, it "hangs" after filling up the status bar for several minutes, then releases and all is well. (NOTE: I don't think this is IE-specific. It has happened booting apps, but I notice it most with IE as I use it extensively.) When things seem to lock up, EVERYTHING is locked up. I can't even bring up Task Manager, none of the icons in the Task Bar are active, etc. Sometimes I can Tab through other apps that are open, sometimes not, but when I can, the app is "frozen" until whatever is going on finishes. During this time, I can watch the process light (I have a Dell D600 laptop) going nuts. Before and after this event, I have run the system through the latest updates of utilities such as Ad-Aware Plus, Ad-Watch, PestPatrol, Symantec Antivirus, Ace Utilities, RegSeeker, etc., and none of them sends up a flag that anything is wrong.

My machine is always up-to-date via Windows Update feature, so I don't know what is causing this. I had the bright idea to reinstall XP SP2, but can't. Every time I try, it quits, giving me nothing more than a smal window with a red X in it and the notification that the install has been cancelled. I ordered the free XPSP2 CD just to see if that would make any difference, but I get the same error. I suspect I could attempt a slipstream install, but I don't want to go through all that if anyone out there recognizes this problem and knows what the solution is outside of doing a slipstream reinstall of SP2. Finally, I have several times done System Restores going back as far as I can, but while they have been successful (although I usually have to do the restore in Safe Mode as they will often fail otherwise), it has made no difference related to this problem.

SP3 Setup Hangs/freezes At 34/35 Minutes

Aug 18, 2010

i am trying to install windows xp service pack 3. but the windows on that kept freezing at the same point, every time it loaded to a state where i couldnt even move the mouse, was working perfectly fine before. i inserted the windows xp sp3 disk, and formatted the hard drive to ntfs (quick) and then the files started to copy, once that was done, it restarted and the actual installation part started. it went from 39 minutes down to 35 minutes and froze on the installing devices part. i thought it was a common error so i restarted the setup. this time it went to 34 minutes and froze. most of the times it would get stuck on 34/35 minutes and either froze or restarted the laptop for no reason. Only once, it went down to 23 minutes and froze. only 2 out of 30 tries went past the install devices section.

System Reboot Itself Every 20 Minutes

Sep 8, 2006

Hello All, this is my first time here and I have a big problem. Last weekend, my computer began acting very slow, etc. Not too long after, the computer began to reboot itself about every 20 minutes without warning. It would just suddenly reboot, as if I'd hit the reset button. This obviously made me suspect it was a virus infection, so I restarted in Safe Mode and ran AVG. It gave me results and I hit the "Heal" button, deleting the entries.I assumed this was the end of it, but as soon as I restarted, the 20 minute reboots began to occur again. For the past few days, I've been trying to find out exactly what is wrong, but have been unable to do so. When I restart in normal mode, a message appears that says "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error". I'm hoping that you'll be able to help me out because I REALLY need that computer right now.

Computer Hangs After Minutes; Setupapi.log Analysis

Jun 11, 2010

I have tried to repair my XP but during the process it hangs at 35 minutes. After searching around for ages I do understand it is some sort of hardware problem. I accessed my BIOS and disabled hardware such as audio, usb legacy mode etc. I have been through the log and cannot work out what is wrong as the last bit the install was doing says it was completed successfully. I know one option is to copy the data from the HD and do a clean install however there are some files that were saved within the programmes itself and there is a crucial set of bookmarks I require which I did not export from the browser.

Internet Problems Have To Reboot After Few Minutes

Jun 15, 2006

I recently installed the Microsoft SP2now I'm having some issues. When I first boot up my computer and log one everything is fine. A few minutes later my internet seems to mess up. In Firefox, everything seems to just die. When I click on a link it acts like it loads it, but nothing happens. If I open a new window, it's opens a blank white window with nothing in the address bar. If I try to type in a website, it will appear to load it, yet nothing happens.I have MSN Messenger set to run when windows starts, and it does connect. However, it will shortly 'die' as well. If I try to reconnect to it I get an error. When I ran the troubleshoot for it it said the problem was in the 'key ports'.There is an old game that I frequently play. The odd thing is, it works perfectly. I can load it up and connect to it without a problem.

Computer Takes 3+ Minutes To Reboot / Slow Internet Speed?

Nov 25, 2004

XP Home reboots in the 3+ minute range. Once it gets to the 'Starting Windows XP' screen, it loads fine. Some damnthing is hanging.MY comp is running slow. Expeciially on the net. Task manager is reporting no excess network use. IE 6 acts like it's on a 56k modem. I use Mozilla FireFox, which runs fine, but my wife is a IE 6 fanatic. Shareaza and WinMX load slowly and take a minute or more to change tabs. BitTornado (latest versions all) loads and runs fine, but seems to hang after an hour or so. It stops updating speeds, seeds, peers, etc. It also closes slowly. Once I get online, the comp slams on the brakes. Mozilla is the only app that seems unaffected. Sygate is also logging a lot of portscans. 7 in the in the last hour or so. All from the same IP address.

Laptop Hangs After Closing Lid / Requires Reboot

May 10, 2006

computer is set to go into standby mode when I shut the lid, but lately when I reopen it (usually 10-15 minutes later) I just get a black screen and have to reboot. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is changing my hardware acceleration. I was having problems with Microsoft Streets and Trips and their GPS and they told me to turn HA down. Not sure if this is the direct cause.

Locks Up For Around 5 Minutes After Each Boot

Jun 30, 2008

i recently had to reinstall windows XP. I have all the updates and service packs, but now every time i boot up the computer or bring it out of standby, the windows interface will not allow any new programs or windows to be launched for around 5 minutes, at which point all of the programs i've attempted to launch will all launch at once. This includes task manager, windows explorer and the start menu.
This seems to have something to do with my internet connection, because it will work alright until i connect, and as soon as i do it will happen and will freeze up. A few days ago i managed to disconnect and it broke the freeze and everything launched, so i connected again and it seemed fine. Today however when i clicked disconnect, it took five minutes or so to actually cut off.

Computer Takes Up To An 11 Minutes To Boot Up ?

I Am up to 11 minutes to boot my JetBook laptop with Win XP pro I also have trouble with battlenet.com and commonaccess.com reappearing in the registry and starup, as I understand it these are malicious things too. There is a message I receive when booting up looking for a registry item which is at least four (4) boxes which makes no sense, how to do a registry search to delete the value?

SP2 Freeze After Boot For 5 Minutes Then Carry On?

Sep 15, 2006

I have a problem which i have occuring on 3 machines (2 in my home, 1 at my parents). When the PC first boots, it goes through the welcome screen, in to the desktop and loads all the programs, virus killer, etc. Problem is, it will then freeze, but not in the normal way. When it has froze, you can still move the mouse, double click icons, click start button and navigate menus, right click to get menus etc, BUT if you try and run anything, or select a program from start menu

select an option on right click, it hourglasses for a few seconds then carries on, but just doesn't open the program or perform the action you requested. Its almost like it will do anything but start a new program or process. After a few minutes (between 2 and 8), it will unfreeze and everything you attempted to do, all the programs you double clicked, options you chose, all happen in one go. From then on it doesn't do it again, so seems to only be on boot.

Boot Sequence Hangs At Logo Boot Screen With Progress Bar

Oct 26, 2007

On boot sequence, PC hangs on Windows boot screen - with the good old progress bar churning along for eternity. It just stays there. It is possible to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking, etc. but never boots up normally. 'Last Known Good..." does not help at all.

I have tried 'repairing' XP using the recovery console (deleting the boot.ini file, then BOOTCFG /REBUILD and then FIXBOOT) to no avail. Do not know where in the boot process it is getting hung up and not totally sure how to determine that.Using Windows XP Media Center Edition with SP2. Plenty of RAM and disk space.

Had this problem once in the past and it seemed to self correct after about 50 reboots.

Does this sound like a re-install of XP is required or are there any other options that might work?

No Boot Loader/ Can't Select OS To Boot, Hangs On Blinking Underscore?

Sep 9, 2009

i have ONE hard drive with partitions. I had a really bad setup first, I had 1 partition with 3 windows installs on it, folders like WINDOWS, WINPRO, WINN, I never took the time to delete them or whatever, and I was using winpro as my main OS. When I was running the above setup, when I boot up it would ask me: Select what OS to load Windows Pro, Windows Home, Windows Home

I decieded to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, worked flawlessy, but I wanted to go back to windows xp pro 64 bit. So I made a new partition and installed windows XP pro 64 bit onto it. when I tried installing windows xp with my CD, the first part would work fine, but then when it restarted to continue the setup, it would load my MOBO logo and then after, it would just show a blinking underscore "_" on the top left corner, and nothing else.

I managed to install a fresh windows xp from my USB flash drive, but when booting up normally it still does not let me select what OS to log on to, it just shows the blinking underscore in the top left after the MOBO logo passes, I actually have to boot by USB drive to boot this fresh install of windows. I think something is wrong with my boot loader, but have no idea how to fix it.

I can use the cd/dvd drive but cannot connect to the internet. There is a warranty, but Best Buy advises there are no hardware issues. They said re-loading Windows would fix the problem. I have performed all the restore and windows trouble shooting start-up fixes and those do not work. However, under device manager, the 1394 adapter "has a problem" and there are yellow ? under Ethernet controller, Multimedia Audio controller, Network Controller, PCI Device, PCI Modem, Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA Compatible)and an exclamation pt under SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller.

I was checking out web set linkware, one of the pages had a box pop up to click OK to run script. This was on a lot of other pages on the same site and worked with no problem. Drive-filling Of 5% With Huge Fragmented ?

Apr 4, 2007

I'm not really sure if this is a Windows problem or a hardware problem, but I'm gonna start here and see where it goes... I'm working on a Dell Dimension 2400 running XPHE, SP1 which has, roughly, a 38 gb harddrive. All but five percent of the drive is filled, mostly with fragmented files huge, solid "chunks" of red, fragmented files. Programs installed and related files total almost 2 gb. Searches for photo, video and other possibly huge files found nothing. All installations considered, less than 10 gb of this drive should be used, yet there is only just over 2 gb available.
