View 14 RepliesIn a not updated Version of Windows XP you can run (Start-run) "start"command at the Run dialog just typing it, when you update windows andwrite the same "start" into Run dialog Windows shows a error message >Windows cannot find `start`. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for the file, click the Start button, andthen click Search. If you are in CMD the `start` command works fine but the problem is thein Run dialog windows doesn’t recognize it ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy computer is currently running Windows XP Home. When i turn it on i get the error message that reads: Sorry for the inconvenience but windows did't start successfully. It then asks me whether i want to start windows in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, last known good configuration, or start windows normally. If i i choose to use the last known good configuration, windows begins to load but then a blue error screen appears and the computer restarts quickly again to the same screen. If i choose any of the other options the computer restarts and eventually ends up at the windows loaded unsuccessfully screen. I would just use my Windows XP disk to either repair or reinstall windows but i use an external cd drive and it does not appear in the boot sequence.

Before I describe it in length, Here are a few things about my system, my OS, my hardware:I use an iMac that runs XP on a partition using Bootcamp. I use this mainly for gaming and Steam, so I don't necessarily care about wiping the hard drive... but I haven't been able to find my XP disc and it would generally be favorable (although not crucial) if there were a fix that doesn't involve losing all my stuff on XP and suffering through 50 GB of re-installations. I also have Avast! and haven't downloaded anything (outside of downloads while joining servers in Source engine games) within the previous 48 hours of having this issue.

View 11 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I was using the computer when I got a BSOD which told me to restart if this is the first time I got this error so I restarted and everything went back to normal. I don't know if this is related to the problem I have now. Today I accidentally disconnected the computer from electricity and when I started it again I got an error message which said that the "<windows root>system 32hal.dll" file is missing or corrupted. I restarted the computer and got the same error again. I put the windows installation cd in the cd drive and chose Repair but it didn't ask me to choose a windows installation to fix and when I tried to find the hal.dll file in the windows folder using the command prompt I discovered that the entire WINDOWS folder was missing from the C: drive. (also, when I tried the "cd" command I got "Access is denied" and all the drive letters were different but I'm not sure this is relevant) I also used chkdsk on the c: drive with no change.
I decided to install windows on another drive to try and recover the windows folder from explorer but when I ran the file recovery program on the windows drive I found that some files from the windows folder (which no longer exists so the recovery program refers to as "?") were overwritten by files I downloaded during the last 3 days and their size was ~150 MB so I think maybe these were only temp files. I thought maybe I accidentally moved the windows folder without noticing the last time I used the computer so I searched for it and only found a "WINDOWS" folder in my "Documents and settings" folder which only contained a "system" folder which itself was empty (I don't know if this folder was always there or is related to the problem I have now). The strange thing is the free space on the drive didn't increase after the windows folder disappeared so I think it could still be there.
Any help would be appreciated. also, if there is no way to fix this I would still like to know what happened...

As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again. The cycles continues without any other options.

View 10 Replies View RelatedMy Uncle just got a Dell computer and installed a dsl modem, and after a couple of days the computer was running super slow, and a popup appeared a few minutes after startup with a 60 second timer saying that windows was going to shut down. I thought that it was Spyware/adware so I installed and ran Adaware, and I deleted over 380 infected files, and ran AVG 7 virus scan and detected trojan viruses. I saw that his internet security settings were set at the minimum level and the firewall was disabled, so I enabled the firewall and raised the bars on the security levels, but there's still a major problem.

Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.
Install the disc before connecting the ipod anyway i installed the disc and then restarted the pc however when the pc boots up it says something along the lines of.
windows failed to start. This could be caused by hardware or software that has recently been installed.
