View 6 Replies View RelatedI have inadvertently setup my laptop with both Win2000 and WinXP. The intent was to set it up (clean install)with XP. I thought that now that I have both OS's on the same partition, I could still do a new install by booting to the XP CD. I go into BIOS, make sure the CD is the first device, save, and reboot the machine. It wants me to pick an OS. It does not want to (seemingly) do an install. How can I fix this. If I must reformat the drive, fine. Please point me in the right direction to get a single OS(XP Pro) on board my machine.

View 6 Replies View RelatedMy computer seems to be in a mess and I have absolutely no idea why.It will only start in Safe Mode, trying last known configuration and normal start ups cause it to freeze atthe loading screen. It started when my computer randomly froze up while I was using it. I tried rebooting it but only safe mode worked, however when I left it alone for a couple of hours it worked normally for around 10 minutes, then froze up again.I thought it could be overheating so I left it for the night, but its still not booting up normally.I've tried using msconfig to make it do a diagnostic startup but that doesn't work either.

View 14 Replies View Relatedmy computer was infected with -powered by Zeno' spyware and I was advised to start in safe mode to remove some files. I ticked safemode under boot.ini in msconfig and my computer restarted, but only got as far as the Windows XP loadup page before rebooting itself. I have tried 'last known good configuration' etc, but to no avail... the computer simpl will not get past this point. I decided to reinstall (repair) Windows XP, but unfortunately, I cannot do this because it reaches a screen where it says setup cannot complete under safe mode. I can't turn this safemode off though, because I can't get the computer on to reaccess boot.ini.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI went into MSCONFIG and checked the box to go into safe mode so i could run some virus scans and adware scans and stuff like that. Now when it gets to the desktop it has the window that says Loading Windows and then after like 2-3 min. it says password is incorrect and that i should retype it and becarefull of caps lock and stuff like that. The thing is don't have a password. It does this when i boot normally too but it lets me hit ok and hit Cancel without a password entered.
All of a sudden it tries logging me in automatically when I start up but the thing is i dont need to log in. So I try to go back into normal mode and Ican't. I hit F8 during startup and went to the Boot Normally option but it still does to safe mode. What do I do? How do I log on or how do I get rid of this password thing? One more thing, the window that tells me the password is wrong has an OK box but theres no mouse on the screen for me to click it and I can't use the keyboard to select it.
I have a old Dell computer which I brought a 24" Dell HD monitor. I upgraded it with a new graphics card which has both VGA and HD capability hook-ups. Now we have a new tower to go with exisiting 24" monitor. My problem is I can not get a old standard VGA monitor to work with the old system listed above. When I plug in the the VGA monitor plug in the VGA outlet in the old computer I get no signal to the monitor. What do I need to do with drivers or other wise to get the old computer back to being able to be used with the old VGA monitor?

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a pc with Windows XP with SP2 installed. My computer has generally worked fine with little issues, but the other day Norton flagged up a virus issue. The virus was called Trojan.Patchep!inf, and couldn't be removed using Norton.Naturally, I'd have posted this in the malware removal/HJT forum, but I'm now locked out of my system.I need a way to be able to get into Windows before I can pull off any HJT logs or run any applications. The issue I have, is when Windows is loading up. I turn on my computer, and Windows boots up until the scrollbar/loading page. The computer then automatically reboots, and the cycle continues until I just hold the off button to turn off the computer. I've entered the boot menu and attempted the reboot in Safe Mode, and also tried using last working configuration. This has no effect, and still results in the constant restarting of the system.
I don't have a Windows XP disc as it was pre-installed when I bought the computer. For the time being I can boot from disc using Linux Ubuntu. I read about the virus that infected my system, which suggests that files such as winlogon are affected by the virus, which would explain my problems booting. Would it be possible to repair these files from Ubuntu, allowing me to boot the computer with Windows? I can then start a thread in the malware forum, posting HJT logs etc.
Wanted to run my antivirus in safe mode. F8 at reboot brought up screen with mode choices (safe mode, safe mode with connections, last time Windows functioned normally, etc. I would choose safe mode and after some blipping the files at hyperspeed at the bottom of the screen, etc.), it would come back to that mode-choice screen with a message at the top saying Windows could not boot, may have been cause by a recent change to hardware or software, etc. I could then choose "run Windows normally" and it would boot. Then I tried the msconfig way of going into safe mode, ticking the safe mode box in boot.ini. Now, because that box is ticked, it always tries to start in safe mode, but can't because of the above problem. In short, it loops me back to that mode-choice screen endlessly.
