At Boot Up Computer Goes Into A 4 Bit Resolution Mode
Sep 2, 2006
When I turn on my computer, it goes into a 4 bit resolution mode and when I go to control panel / display to change the resolution the bar won't move ; it wont allow me to change it. there was also a message about the computer not being able to find some PCI device all of a sudden, not too sure what that is all about.Really trying to avoid formatting.
I just want to know how to change screen resolution in safe mode. The reason is when I try to use certain programs in safe mode, I can't view all the options and buttons of the program because it goes off the screen and resizing dosent help.I go to desktop properties and try to change it but the bar will not slide to any other position.
i have xp sp2 the other day zone alarm had an update, which i preformed but did not reboot at that moment. then i ran system mechanic6 total care program. then i restarted my computer. here is where my problem comes in my computer will continually goes to the screen that states in 30 seconds your system will start in normal mode(it does not) then when it did that for 5x, i tried last known 3x(it did not work),then safe mode then safe mode with network, then safe mode with command prompt.
My computer seems to be in a mess and I have absolutely no idea why.It will only start in Safe Mode, trying last known configuration and normal start ups cause it to freeze atthe loading screen. It started when my computer randomly froze up while I was using it. I tried rebooting it but only safe mode worked, however when I left it alone for a couple of hours it worked normally for around 10 minutes, then froze up again.I thought it could be overheating so I left it for the night, but its still not booting up normally.I've tried using msconfig to make it do a diagnostic startup but that doesn't work either.
I installed a required update for MSN Messenger and after I rebooted the computer, it won't load into Windows and gives me the following error Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYSTEMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. How can i fix this problem with the CD? I tried the recovery console, but it is just a command prompt.
Laptop (running Windows XPHome Edition) has developed some problem so that he can't get it to boot up; not even in Safe Mode.He doesn't have his installation disk with him, stuck with a dead computer.
My daughter shut the power off during shutdown. Now the Personal Computer won't reboot. The screen comes up asking what mode you want to boot up in.No matter what you select it loops back. The Personal Computer is a Gateway with Windows XP Media. It didn't come with recovery cds, only blank ones to make your own.I just got off the phone with CS and they are sending me recovery cds but it will take about a week to get.Is there any other way to fix this without using the recovery cds ?
Im trying to boot a Win2k computer... It hangs at the Windows 2000 prompt with the blue bar going across the screen... I can boot into safe mode but not regular mode...
my computer was infected with -powered by Zeno' spyware and I was advised to start in safe mode to remove some files. I ticked safemode under boot.ini in msconfig and my computer restarted, but only got as far as the Windows XP loadup page before rebooting itself. I have tried 'last known good configuration' etc, but to no avail... the computer simpl will not get past this point. I decided to reinstall (repair) Windows XP, but unfortunately, I cannot do this because it reaches a screen where it says setup cannot complete under safe mode. I can't turn this safemode off though, because I can't get the computer on to reaccess boot.ini.
I am trying to get into the computer administrator account, so I Can change my limited account to an administrator account as well, but I can't get to the screen that says I can go into safe mode...When I press F8 during startup, this screen comes up.Then when I go to start -> Run -> MSCONFIG I'm not allowed to because I am not a computer administator. My computer is an My computer is an HP Pavilion a562n It has an ASUS motherboard I think?
The problem that I am having is with my HP Pavilion XT983 Desktop Computer. It will not boot up when I power it on. The power light is on and the monitor is in sleep mode. The only thing that is operating is the fan. I have tried rebooting with the boot up diskette but it is not reading my A: drive. It also will not read CDs.
I had been away from my computer for about an hour and when i returned the screen was black and nothing would change it so hit the restart button. When the computer started up, I first saw the usual blue dell logo-screen, however, the next screen was the windows 98 startup logo-screen. The computer then entered DOS mode and at the top of the screen it says Microsoft Windows 98. This problem persists every time i start the computer. I only have 1 primary partion and i installed XP on it from a clean install by using a win98 bootdisk to format and running winnt from the i386 folder of the xp cd. When i try to enter SAFE MODE the computer goes to the Win 98 start-up logo screen again and enters DOS again. I know that all my files are still on the HDD because i can navigate through them. All i really want to do is somehow save some files that are on te HDD so i can just format and reinstall XP.
I went into MSCONFIG and checked the box to go into safe mode so i could run some virus scans and adware scans and stuff like that. Now when it gets to the desktop it has the window that says Loading Windows and then after like 2-3 min. it says password is incorrect and that i should retype it and becarefull of caps lock and stuff like that. The thing is don't have a password. It does this when i boot normally too but it lets me hit ok and hit Cancel without a password entered.
All of a sudden it tries logging me in automatically when I start up but the thing is i dont need to log in. So I try to go back into normal mode and Ican't. I hit F8 during startup and went to the Boot Normally option but it still does to safe mode. What do I do? How do I log on or how do I get rid of this password thing? One more thing, the window that tells me the password is wrong has an OK box but theres no mouse on the screen for me to click it and I can't use the keyboard to select it.
I have a dual boot linux/xp system.I was looking at partitions - just listing them - in linux, and now win xp won't come up in normal mode. It will come up in safe mode, however. Can you help me get my "normal mode" back? When the horizontal moving bar comes up in normal mode, it just goes on forever. I see the disk light go on for about 8 cycles of the bar. It usually runs 11 cycles before giving me the user selection screen. Now the disk light goes out after cycle 8, and the bar keeps going. I waited 32 cycles before giving up.
I have a computer that will not boot up except for in safe mode, probably due to a virus. When I attempt to install the latest Ad-Aware, I get the following message:"Windows Installer: The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation" I am currently logged in as administrator
First off, I purchased my computer back in 2004 preloaded with Windows XP Home. Just last week, I got a serious virus on my computer. It disabled system restore, wiped all restore points, disabled windows help, and deleted some important files. I went out and bought a new copy of Windows XP Home SP2. It installed fine at first. But, once I logged on, I realized my color setting and screen resolution were very low. A message popped up on my system tray saying something about screen resolution and color were very low. It asked to fix it. I clicked ok but nothing happened for about 2 minutes. Then, I went into display settings, and saw the settings were the lowest. But, the slider for screen resolution was set at 640 x 480. I tried to move it, but it wouldn't move. Also, the drop down list for color quality only had one option, "Lowest (4 bit)". I restarted my computer, but it was the same. I cant change it. On the old copy of Windows, the screen resolution was 1024 x 768, and the color could go up high. I forget the setting though. Also, I did not change my monitor. Does anyone know whats wrong or how to fix it?
This strange behavior started happening recently on otherwise solid workstation: Every other time i reboot my computer, the display resolution will have dropped back to its lowest setting; (800x600) When i try to set it back up to its highest Resolution setting (2560x1600) it sometimes will not allow it and drops back to 800x600. Other times it crashes to Blue Screen of death, then reboots itself. Sometimes when I launch Adobe Premiere Pro 2, the computer crashes to blue screen of death.
I went into bios and disabled the search for the A: drive , because i couldn't care less. then it brought me to the screen to choose to open in safe mode, normally, or from the last point where windows worked well. problem : i can not use my keyboard in this setting, it works in bios, but i cant choose to load from the last working point of the OS.
I have a Windows XP Professional Edition and i incurred a spyware virus on my PC, so i made a dumb decision by running MSCONFIG and changing my SAFEBOOT option, I did this because previously I couldn't even get into Safe Mode, it would load the files on the screen.
Recently I was playing a game when my computer froze up, when I restarted it, it froze every time on the Windows XP bootscreen. It boots fine in Safe mode with networking. (I'm typing this post on this computer)
I changed my boot option using msconfig to safe mode. But I didn't realize I needed a local username/ password to login. So now I don't know a local username password and pressing F8 and specifying Normal mode still boots in safe mode.
I have a pc with Windows XP with SP2 installed. My computer has generally worked fine with little issues, but the other day Norton flagged up a virus issue. The virus was called Trojan.Patchep!inf, and couldn't be removed using Norton.Naturally, I'd have posted this in the malware removal/HJT forum, but I'm now locked out of my system.I need a way to be able to get into Windows before I can pull off any HJT logs or run any applications. The issue I have, is when Windows is loading up. I turn on my computer, and Windows boots up until the scrollbar/loading page. The computer then automatically reboots, and the cycle continues until I just hold the off button to turn off the computer. I've entered the boot menu and attempted the reboot in Safe Mode, and also tried using last working configuration. This has no effect, and still results in the constant restarting of the system.
I don't have a Windows XP disc as it was pre-installed when I bought the computer. For the time being I can boot from disc using Linux Ubuntu. I read about the virus that infected my system, which suggests that files such as winlogon are affected by the virus, which would explain my problems booting. Would it be possible to repair these files from Ubuntu, allowing me to boot the computer with Windows? I can then start a thread in the malware forum, posting HJT logs etc.
Wanted to run my antivirus in safe mode. F8 at reboot brought up screen with mode choices (safe mode, safe mode with connections, last time Windows functioned normally, etc. I would choose safe mode and after some blipping the files at hyperspeed at the bottom of the screen, etc.), it would come back to that mode-choice screen with a message at the top saying Windows could not boot, may have been cause by a recent change to hardware or software, etc. I could then choose "run Windows normally" and it would boot. Then I tried the msconfig way of going into safe mode, ticking the safe mode box in boot.ini. Now, because that box is ticked, it always tries to start in safe mode, but can't because of the above problem. In short, it loops me back to that mode-choice screen endlessly.
I have an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard (64-bit) with an AMD dual-core 64-bit CPU. The system boots and works fine when I use a HD loaded with XP64, but it won't boot when I use a HD loaded with the 32-bit version of XP Pro. It just loops through the BIOS banner screen and goes to the Windows screen that let's me boot into Safe mode. None of the boot options there will work--it just loops back through the POST. How can I get it to boot using the 32-bit version of Windows XP Pro?
I have an older somputer I use to Host Games online...seemed fine last few nite .however the last 2 oe 3 times I have started it...it takes forever to start and a screen appears saying sorry for any inconveinince but windows could not start..etc etc..gives options to start in Normal mode safe mode or last known good configuration..wich is what I tried after turning it off and back on again..still nothing..I can get it to start in safe mode....but it wont boot up in normal mode..just hangs at "Windows XP" screen...Its an older Pentium4 Dell Dimension4300.
PC will not boot into any mode, SAFE, SAFE w/networking, Last Known, etc. Does anyone have a clue as another option available? If not that, I tried to use XP cd to repair installation and after pressing R for repair and 1 for C:windows directory, I am asked to enter an administrator password. I've tried every password known to me and none of them work. Does anyone know if there is a default password I should be using? I've never been asked for a password, that I can remember, when running repair.
My son arrived home from college and his dell laptop is dying. The unit will not boot up in any mode or from the winxp disc. After a while of trying to start, We get the blue screen of death with the following error message.
Is there any other way to boot in safe mode than F8? Windows XP is not loading properly. It is going to my background with the cursor, but nothing else. I tired to run msconfig from the task manager, but it didn't open. I want to boot in safe mode to do a system restore, but when I restart the computer, the F8 option says "to enable system configuration."
