Very Slow Startup On Very Fast Machine
May 29, 2007
Recently, my computer's startup in Windows XP has been getting slower and slower, the first loading screen takes a little while, but the most annoying part is that once I'm inside Windows, everything appears loaded, except for the icons in the taskbar, and I cannot click on the Start button or do anything, I must wait for the entire system to finish loading before I can do anything. I don't have many programs in my startup either.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 64 3700 2.2 GHZ Processor with 3GB of Ram. My computer is pretty fast, but just recently the startup has been sooo slow. i switched my log in screen to the classic with the autmatic login about two months ago and everything was fine tell about a week or two ago. When i start up my computer it will get to where its time to load the desktop and the log in dialog box will show up and it will finish and then this is where it should load all my startup programs and desktop icons, but it just loads my desktop background picture and then wait about 45 seconds to a minute and it will make the windows startup music and then wait about another minute and then it will start to load all my desktop icons and startup programs. I have tried al most everything. I have ran AVG antivirus about 10 times with updated defiinitions, ran ad-aware, ran spybot search and destory, registry mechanic, ccleaner. I have listen to other suggestions. I have gone into msconfig and removed all startup items, and even tried to remove uncessesary start up services from there as well. NOTHING works.

I have a ton of programs that come up at boot up on my laptop, this is ok with me except when I'm running on batteries. I want to be able to setup another "login" so that I can boot my laptop fast. How can I do this? I tried setting up a 2nd login but I couldn't find away to stop all of the programs from loading at startup for that one login.

Isn't it annoying when you want to go to a new website, or any other site but your homepage, and you have to wait for your 'home' to load? This tweak tells Internet Explorer to simply 'run', without loading any webpages. (If you use a 'blank' page, that is still a page, and slows access. Notice the 'about:blank' in the address bar. The blank html page must still be loaded..). To load IE with 'nothing' [nothing is different than blank]:1. Right-click on any shortcut you have to IE[You should create a shortcut out of your desktop IE icon, and delete the original icon]2. Click Properties3. Add -nohome [with a space before the dash] after the endquotes in the Target field.4. Click OKFire up IE from your modified shortcut,

I recently reinstalled windows xp (sp3 integrated) on my C drive and had yet installed audio and video drivers only. This PC has two internal hard disks; one 80GB with partitions C through I and other 40GB with a single partition J on it. All partitions are NTFS formated. Browsing folders on all partitions is fast except J where it is extremely slow.
To troubleshoot this, I ran Sysinternals Process Monitor (Procmon.exe) and observed some strange behaviour for explorer.exe. Every time I select a root folder on J for opening (using mouse or keyboard), explorer enumerates all sub-folders recursively which consumes several seconds if folder contains a lot of sub-folders and files. In the meantime, explorer remains unresponsive. Here is an example (merely selecting FreeCommanderPortable in J drive using mouse or keyboaad

A firends machine (XPSP2) is stuck in a loop of starting, going to a screen that says Windows did not start correctly, then offering the options of safe mode, safe mode w/ networking, last known good, etc. No matter which option I choose, the machine shuts down and restarts and goes through the same loop. What should I check? I am able to get into BIOS.

The HP machine boots up and right after the Windows XP loading screen a blue screen flashes and then the computer restarts. I put a XP Home CD in and tried to repair the machine, but all i got was a command prompt where i ran the chkdsk. It came back saying "found one or more errors on the volume" What would be the best solution for this?

a classic slow responding computer, complete with slow opening of browser, choppy videos (buffering related I guess) on Windows Media Player 10 and general sluggishness all around. I'm careful to keep up to speed on my Spybot and Ad-aware SE programs and run my McAfee virus program regularly. They all have appeared to run clean. At the most recent startup before this writing, Task Manager told me there were 53 processes going on. Is that way too much.?

the PC that I'm using (Dell 4600) is a great little machine, but it has many issues: very slow (despite 3.2GHz processor and 2G RAM), has noise in its core audio, and its HDD fragments too often to be useful for video editing. No biggie - so here's my question: For XP, what would be the best machine out there for audio and video work? I feel that my current machine's bottlenecks and other difficulties coul be residing within its motherboard, hence, my consideration for a possible replacement. If there are any good experiences out there, I'd like to know of them, be they with manufactured PCs as well as ones built part by part (names of motherboard manufactures would be great).

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with 3GHz Pentium 512MB ram, running windows XP. It was top-of-the-line when I bought it, but is now about 4 years old. Over time, the machine has been running slower and slower, especially since I run Apple's itunes, and firefox, which I assume are resource hogs from looking at the Task Manager's processes tab. Lately, it has taken forever for the machine to load windows, or wake up from sleep. Nothing dramatic or noticeable that I could point to, just a gradual slowing down. I always attributed it to an aging computer and lack of memory. So this week, I purchased 2 GB of additional RAM. I've correctly installed it and confirmed, from MyComputer System Properties, that I now have 2.5 GB of RAM installed. I was expecting a big change in speed, but there doesn't seem to be that much of a difference. I have Symantec FireWall and AntiVirus running, ( it was original to the system) and am afraid to remove it.About a year ago, under advice of an IT friend, I also installed AVG and Spybot Search&Destroy.

Toshiba M50 XP Machine is very slow to boot up, and it then takes at least 5 minutes for Firefox to open after that.Every scan I run gives the machine a clean bill of health, and often congratulates me on the machine being fully clean.Just today I added HDD Health, and that gives a report of excellent health, and a 100% rating, even though the machine is getting on for 5 years old. When I look at Task Manager Processes during the long boot up it says "not responding".I am with Eircom Broadband, and my Eircom Mail, using Thunderbird, says that it cannot contact server.I can get the mails on other machines - Win 7 or Vista

My sister's computer is running very slowly, particularly at startup (which seems to take forever). I've got Panda antivirus software running and do reasonably regular spyware scans with AdAware, but am not sure if the problem is just that the computer is old with too little memory / overheating because it's on almost all the time / something else I haven't thought of. To help me determine what's going on, could someone much smarter than myself take a look at this HJT log and see if you see anything of concern?

think it all started 2 days ago. i had installed a game, but it would not start cause i needed some missing dll files. which i inserted. one of the things i did wrong however was that i tried to replace a faultrep.dll file. this was not the file i wanted to change. i read wrong on the error dll messege, but whenever i tried to replace it the old file would swap in, so no harm should have come from that. i also installed a missing direct x file: D3DX929.dll ..... thats the dll changes i have done. anyway the next day startup was weeery slow. i uslay can boot up my pc in 2 minutes, now it takes 5++ minutes, the destop appears in normal time. but the welcome tune is a good 2 minutes late, then programs that now are slow to start up are live messenger and zone alarm pro. also i have other problems. like i cant accses "my computer" by icon or other ways
