Slow Folder Browsing On One NTFS Drive But Fast On Other Drives?

I recently reinstalled windows xp (sp3 integrated) on my C drive and had yet installed audio and video drivers only. This PC has two internal hard disks; one 80GB with partitions C through I and other 40GB with a single partition J on it. All partitions are NTFS formated. Browsing folders on all partitions is fast except J where it is extremely slow.
To troubleshoot this, I ran Sysinternals Process Monitor (Procmon.exe) and observed some strange behaviour for explorer.exe. Every time I select a root folder on J for opening (using mouse or keyboard), explorer enumerates all sub-folders recursively which consumes several seconds if folder contains a lot of sub-folders and files. When i open IE6 it takes over a minute for the webpage to appear and meanwhile i cant minimise it etc...... It looks like the program is failing to respond but doesn't say so. Once loaded browsing is normal, althought every time a separate IE window is opened the initial slow response applies followed by normal browsing.

have a new installation of WinXP SP1. When i try to browse any folder, the explorer either hangs for a long time or crashes occasionally. This happens when my machine is connected to network. If my machine is off the network, it shows the folder contents immediately. I removed all the network shares connected to my machine and still the problem persists.

i got amd 5200+x2 brisbane 1x 2gig mem chip win xp spk3 all drivers updated machine full ok but as soon as my wifi 802.11b/g key on net at 54mbps everything slows and web browsing near impossible on IE8 and google cpu runs at 0% most of time ? and temp of cpu 34 and 35 average.

I have an AMD Athlon XP 64 3700 2.2 GHZ Processor with 3GB of Ram. My computer is pretty fast, but just recently the startup has been sooo slow. i switched my log in screen to the classic with the autmatic login about two months ago and everything was fine tell about a week or two ago. When i start up my computer it will get to where its time to load the desktop and the log in dialog box will show up and it will finish and then this is where it should load all my startup programs and desktop icons, but it just loads my desktop background picture and then wait about 45 seconds to a minute and it will make the windows startup music and then wait about another minute and then it will start to load all my desktop icons and startup programs. I have tried al most everything. I have ran AVG antivirus about 10 times with updated defiinitions, ran ad-aware, ran spybot search and destory, registry mechanic, ccleaner. I have listen to other suggestions. I have gone into msconfig and removed all startup items, and even tried to remove uncessesary start up services from there as well. NOTHING works.

Recently, my computer's startup in Windows XP has been getting slower and slower, the first loading screen takes a little while, but the most annoying part is that once I'm inside Windows, everything appears loaded, except for the icons in the taskbar, and I cannot click on the Start button or do anything, I must wait for the entire system to finish loading before I can do anything. I don't have many programs in my startup either.

I have a Gateway desktop, running XP Home with Pentium 4 CPU, 2.4 GHz, 256 MB ram, with 74.5 GB HD at 88% free, using FireFox 3.0.13 and Mcafee Security Suite from Comcast. I have followed other thread advice and removed old Java files, Adaware and Spybot S& D, and installed Superantispyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, CCleaner and HiJackthis. I have tried everything I know but working on this computer is like watching paint dry.

Dell Dimension 2350 windows XP 28GB hard drive 14GB free space -- don't know how much RAM I've read other posts and thought I'd try MSCONFIG suggestions but how do I know which microsoft programs to disable under services there are tons of them (DNS, Server, Workstation to name a few) -- same for programs listed under start-up most of them have unindentifiable names like wkufind, igfxtray, hkcmd - are these spyware??

I've been browsing the web for an answer to my laptop's problem but no luck so far.

i just bought this new computer for 1 of the staff and i have configured his profile. but then i tried to browse the internet and found it very slow, not in opening the IE, but in loading the pages. it takes around 20 to 30 seconds to load a page. when i use ping to check the connectivity, it takes a long time to display the first line, but it gives me a 1ms when pinging the server, which is good.
now i login with the administrator account and find the internet browsing is fast, but again the ping takes a while to display the first line. i did give that user Administrator permissions and tried again, but it's the same issue. i thought it would be higher permissions which could affect the user. So, i added the user to "domain admins", "administrators" groups, and i tried again, but the same situation

This happen to all my clients, i'm using Win2003 as my server, and i set only a Group Policy, which is "set all the local administrator password to be the same with the domain admin" <only 1Kb in size> but i don't know why, all the clients takes up to 2-3 minutes to go to the ctrl+alt+del screen. no virus or spyware detected by symantec.

I have a WinXP Pro XP2 laptop that started experiencing problems browsing. The first time I launch any instance of Windows explorer and click the + next to "my computer" it takes about 3 minutes to respond - any subsequent browsing in that explorer window is fine. If I were to launch another windows explorer window - exact same behavior. If I go to save a file fom any app and I want to browse to a specific location - same process 3 minute wait. If I type the locations in lieu of browsing for them, no delay at all - only if browsing.

My antivirus detected krag.exe and removed it from my flash drive. However, when I try to open the drive by double-clicking on the corresponding drive (F in My Computer, a pop-up window appears saying "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:". I chose windows explorer since it's what you use when trying to explore or browse through files.
The problem is, the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" is grayed out and can't be checked/ticked. So, I have to keep pointing the "open with" pop-up box to explorer.exe whenever I want to browse the files in my flash drive.The last attempt that I did to fix this problem was to right click on the drive letter then properties then went to the autoplay tab and chose "Open folder to view files". The "Open with" pop-up box still appears whenever i double click on the drive letter.

Windows XP home cannot find 2nd hard drive, it does not show up in disk management. It does show up in the bios.At one point it did show up, healthy formatted NTFS drive.I was able to add a fileafter that it was gone.I have one user account, and GUEST account.I checked permissions and set them all to enable.

My office has a number of mapped network drives for each user which, unfortunately, start at drive letter F.Each time a USB device is used on the computer it is also automatically assigned the drive letter F (presuming that C is hard disk and D and E are CD/DVD drives). This has to be manually changed from within Disk Management.Apparently this is as a result of physical drives taking precedent over the mapped network drives.Is there any workaround for this other than moving the mapped drive letters further along in the alphabet? - this is not really a feasible solution at this time.

My Windows XP computer has 3 partitions on 1 hard drive. 2 of the partitions is using the NTFS file system and the other 1 is running on the FAT file system which contains my operating system it is only 2gb in size and is now full up (its moaning at me in a ballon popup) I was wondering wheather its possible to merge one of the NTFS partition with the FAT partition without affecting the OS inside. Ive downloaded a program called partition magic as i have heard that will do it but it cant merge NTFS and FAT together

I have 3 drives C: D: and E:. I want to get rid of the E: drive how do I do that? Also my computer is old in computer terms about 5 or 6 how can I speed it up without paying money? My C: drive always seems to be low disk space. I don't download anything to that drive. One last thing I have msn dial up 56k, but when I sign on Ionly get a 44k and sometimes a 41k or 42k. I am running XP Media Edition on a BRAND NEW Computer I hooked up today. I took an existing NTFS External Hard drive and plugged it into a vacant USB port. The new PC does not like this external drive. When I boot the light on the front of the drive turns amber and when I go to My Computer it does not appear. If I power down the drive it will finally appear in My Computer but when I try to access it there is only one EMPTY folder. When I look at Properties it says there is 160G being used and the rest is free so the data is there. I can plug this same External drive into another PC and it reads just fine.

Whats the difference between a FAST reformat and a SLOW reformat when I reinstall WIN XP Home? I got a damned WinFixer ad ware crap program that keeps reappearing after I re install windows XP and did a FAST reformat. Wouldnt that wipe out that Ad -Ware?

when I browse "My Network Places", the browsing is so incredibly slow. It takes a long while when you click one icon in the “My Network Places” for that to open up and go to the next directory or when just first displaying the computers in “My Network Places”, it goes so slow.
I use Windows Workgroup on the LAN to share out internet. Everything else, other than browsing the network, works great. The internet browses nice and fast.
This morning I opened My Network Places while my pc was still loading all the programs at start-up and "My Network Places" was fast. After a few minutes it was back to normal low pace. Now I guess it is something running on my pc slowing it down. Is it maybe to do with XP Service Pack 2? Before installing SP2 the network browsing on my pc is fast, after installing SP2, it is slow. Other computers on the network without SP2 browse the network quite fast.
All the pc's on the network has XP Pro.
