I used to have a way on Win 98 to uncheck things that I didn't want to have on my computer when it boots up. I now have Win XP and can't figure out how to get to the list where I can uncheck things. I activated the Windows Messenger and I'd like to stop having constantly in my face. I'm sorry I activated it in the first place. I don't want to completely remove it, but would like it to stop working for now. Can someone give me specific steps to get to the "start up" list?

On the how do you want to connect to the internet page, connect using a broad band connection is allready checked and the other choices are greyed out. Problem was the onboard video failed replaced it with a video card from another system (riva TNT) and bought some memory system wouldn't boot, determined that the memory was bad Now the system booted but win2K wouldn't work. View 6 Replies View RelatedI have experienced a sudden problem starting programs. The computer boots correctly, and all desktop icons appear correctly. But when I double click a desktop icon, or start a program from the start menu, I get a popup window displaying a list of programs and asking me which program I want to use to start the application. I select the correct program (or browse to the appropriate .exe file), but still the application doesn't start. This includes IE and Windows Messenger. My virus scanner was about the only thing that I could start up, and I did a system scan with Panda Anti-Virus, but it didn't show anything substantial (just some cookies).Using my WinXP set up disk,I've tried to do a repair (I guess reinstallation without reformatting the hard disk), but after I entered the License Key, the computer did a reboot and then stopped. It is stuck on the XP splash screen and won't go any further (I once let it run over night, but it was still frozen on the splash screen). I even tried to repeat the repair process, but that didn't work.Automatic updates did download an update just before this problem started (I think it was the day before the problems began). I don't know what this update was and I'm not sure it was SP3 (system does have SP2 installed).Considering that the computer freezes now when booting up, is there anything that I can do short of reformatting the Hard Drive? I also have another hard drive that I can use to install XP onto. Is there any way that I can rescue the data from the old Hard Drive and transfer to new drive?

As the boot begins, it takes you to a screen that says, :"if a previous start up attempt was inturrupted due to a power failure, then choose Start Windows Normally". We follow the directions, takes us the Window XP screen trying to boot it up and then takes us to the Gateway screen and then back to the screen where it asks the same question again.The cycles continues without any other options.

I forgot how to get to that menu but I remember that I could check and uncheck which things would start up, etc. The reason for this is because everytime I start windows, it tries to load my scanning software which I don't need started anymore due to the scanner not being connected at all anymore, and the un installation not going as properly as it should of.. but it just bugs me that it tries to connect to the scanner (with about 3-4 attempts) when Windows starts so this is my best option.

It makes a repetitious sound like the hard drive is trying to start but can't and will continue to do so indefinately or until it boots. So I assumed it was a hdd issue, however trying the hd in another laptop worked fine and an alternate hd in my Compaq has the same problem. It does start up occasionally, although it usually freezes half way through booting up, but can occasionally work upto half an hour.

Attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the Original CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
So I enter the cd rom and press 'r' for repair, I choose C:windows, however before it can begin to repair it asks me for an 'Administration Password' which I have no idea of after many attempts.
I do not want to have to format the pc since I have some very important files on it. Any help is appreciated.

When i turn on my laptop I get a message that windows cannot start and I need to select from a list of ways to start..Each option brings me back to the same message and I cannot get the Windows System to start. The laptop is a Toshiba Sattelite and Windows is 2000 xp home edition.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy PC just froze and I had to shut it down. when I tried to go a google search it wouldn't give me any results, just a black screen. Then it froze. From that point on it wouldn't load Windows XP. It just won't start it properly - it goes on to the Windows XP loading page with the little blue bar but then just clicks off and won't do what it usually does. At first it gave me an option of starting in safe mode, starting normally or using the last known configuration to start properly. Now it won't even give me that choice,
I think this may have something to do with the fact I've got two HD's in there (a 20gb as the C: drive then a 120gb extra that has been partitioned for storage). In truth, I'm not sure about anything though.
My real problem is that I can't get into Windows. I haven't backed up
Noise was coming from his pc towercase, we opened the case and found that some wires were pressing up against the side of case cooling fan, when we moved them, the noise dissappeared, however when we put everything back together and turned everything back on, we found that we'd get the Windows XP start screen for about 5- 8 seconds before the screen went absolutely blank. We opened the case again to see if we accidently disconnected anything, and tried again - without much success. Neither of us are particularly pc savvy, and realise we prolly should'nt have opened the case.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Hewlett Packard Media Center comp with Window xp and it won't. ok when I get to the log on screen and it ask for my password I put it in and then that takes about a minute to load and then when it gets through my background pics shows up and that's it! It won't go no further. I don't know what's going on. The toolbars, desktop stuff just wont come up. My mom is gonna take me to get it fixed but I started thinking that everything that's been on my comp will be gone!

A blue screen comes up stating Registry_error.window attempts to start but then goes to a black screen that states many options that do not work.
I recently upgraded my PC (Win XP) to service pack 2. It was ok, but rather slow and there was some minor errors using applications. 2 days later, it won't let me into my account. It takes ages on the Windows loading screen.
